In the 1959 premiere season of “The Untouchables” (based on the book by Eliot Ness and Oscar Fraley) the opening title jumps off of the cover of the book and stretches out into tall, extremely condensed lettering. This inspired the type font Federal Agent JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

A typeface from the 1873 Miller & Richard of Glasgow specimen book of 1873 named Cuban provided the inspiration for this festive face. Its graceful curves and open stance gently whisper nostalgia, with traces of both the quaint and the exotic. Both versions contain the complete Latin 1252, Central European 1250 and Turkish 1254 character sets.

The pen lettered opening credits for the 1937 film “The Awful Truth” inspired Date Book JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. Clearface Gothic first appeared in 1910, designed by Morris Fuller Benton, the world-famously prolific typeface artist. In addition to Clearface Gothic, Benton also designed classics like Franklin Gothic, Century Expanded, and many other types. Clearface Gothic is a sans serif face with light forms displaying the Zeitgeist of the turn of the 20th century. Distinguishing characteristics are the open forms of the a" and "c," the arched "k," and the upward-tilting horizontal stroke of the "e." The relatively narrow typeface, with its open inner white spaces, is extremely legible even in small point sizes. There is no accompanying italic. This digital version of Clearface Gothic was made in 1984 by the Linotype Design Studio."

The 1913 sheet music for "There's A Girl in the Heart of Maryland (with a Heart That Belongs to Me)" may have had no shortage of words in the title - fifteen to be exact, but it also offered some nice hand lettering in the Art Nouveau style. Maryland JNL is a condensed typeface with an unusual twist. The "S" and "G" both have spurs on them, which is reminiscent of the preceding Victorian period and the popular spurred Tuscan alphabets of the time.

A typographic treasure, originated at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, had been brought back to life. With its charming touch it makes a wonderful font for poems, bookcovers, reprints and other historically relevant projects. To get access to all ligatures, it is recommended to activate both Standard and Discretionary Ligatures; the round s you find on the # key, and typing the combination N-o-period and activating the OT feature Ordinals gets you the numero sign.

I've had mixed feelings about Kabel; It is a brilliant headline font with a lot of character, but it's the characters I have problems with. The versions of all big foundries have the same flaws (in my opinion), especially lowecase a and s. So I finally went ahead and made an all new version. It is not Kabel, but very much like it. It has unique x-height, weight and width, and many individual characters are also different from the original.

Popular music of the early 1900s included a genre called two step; round dances utilizing a sliding step with a tempo in either march or polka time. 1911's "Daughters of the American Revolution" was one such march/two step. The cover of the sheet music had the title hand lettered in a slightly rounded sans serif type design in the Art Nouveau style popular during that era. It is now available as Two Step Nouveau JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Nothing really. Love and Peace is an Art Nouveau style typeface inspired by Eckmann-Schrift by Otto Eckmann in 1900. Love and Peace is filled with ethereal elegance and it's great for posters, magazines and psychedelic LP covers. Love and Peace is equipped with few Contextual Alternates and Standard Ligatures to prevent characters from colliding. These four typefaces, Berlinette NB, Lyonette NB, Marseillette NB and Parisette NB, were designed from the same basic shape, a fanciful geometric form that avoids strict horizontals and uses more offbeat triangular shapes. Marseillette is the nasty one, with sharp hook terminations that require careful use. Don�t slip and accidentally stick one in your hand � it will hurt pretty bad and make you blubber like a baby. It�s good for surreal warning signs on dark, forbidding docks where gooey monsters live.

Reminiscent of the headlines of legal documents, way bills, stock certificates and the like, the digital version of the design was given the name Legal Eagle JNL and is available in both regular and oblique versions. A companion font without the engraved lines is also available as Junior Clerk JNL.

The inspiration source for Pantomime Monogram is an unusual Art Deco design from a vintage embroidery publication which combines both sans-serif and flare serif styles to create a diamond monogram format. This monogram, which evokes visions of it etched into bakelite, was originally intended to adorn handkerchiefs and towels, but it has so many other possibilities. It is one of many monogram designs from the early 1900’s which fall into a two letter format that is either adorned or interwoven with framing styles. Regina-Cursiv is a warm, bold, casual typeface. Its friendly, rounded curves remind me of the line from a gospel song by the Canton Spirituals, about "smoothin' up the roughway." Jointly released by the Bauer and Berthold foundries of Germany during the fin-de-siecle period, this typeface has some cultural flexibility. There are alternate versions of the uppercase ‘H’ and ‘I’ that can be chosen to reflect a humanist or blackletter tradition, whichever you prefer. Other alternates offer various stylistic choices. Answer Songs have been around for [probably] just as long as there have been songs. 1917's "If I Catch the Guy Who Wrote Poor Butterfly" was the answer to the 1916 hit "Poor Butterfly" [by Raymond Hubbell and John Golden], which in turn was inspired by the Puccini opera "Madame Butterfly". "Poor Butterfly" was so popular that this "answer" tune had as part of its lyrics "That melody haunts me in my sleep; it seems to creep." Nonetheless, the sheet music for William Jerome and Arthur Green's comic lament had the title hand lettered with an oval nib lettering pen and is now availably as a digital type face called Dip Pen JNL.

Cartes has a bit of a strange origin story, as far as fonts go. It’s a combination of ideas from 1920’s advertising and hand-painted letters from the 1500s. The typeface was designed to flow with elegance and speed yet retain a sense of the handmade. The serifs flow with indentations implying movement and terminate with inky globules that lend your copy a sense of gravitas. This typeface can be used for headlines, short texts, posters, logos, headlines, headlines in big sizes or just as easily for ad text. At large sizes, pen strokes can be seen that give the typeface a touch of humanity and vigor. At smaller sizes the type is still unique, but readable.

A Roman typeface with emphasized triangular serifs. A font like this one could have been designed in 18th century France. To some extent, Auxerre is a precursor of “Etienne,” which later became popular as an advertising typeface of the 19th century. Auxerre is available in five font weights: light, regular, semibold, bold and black. Auxerre supports Western and Central European languages including Scandinavian languages. Plus, the font includes lots of ligatures, tabular figures as well as a “Capital German Double S.” Auxerre fits perfectly with any topic related to the past two centuries. It also works amazingly well on technical issues. And of course it fits very well with topics of fine art and art history.

Twentieth Century was designed and drawn by Sol Hess in the Lanston Monotype drawing office between 1936 and 1947. The first weights were added to the Monotype typeface library in 1959. Twentieth Century is based on geometric shapes which originated in Germany in the early 1920's and became an integral part of the Bauhaus movement of that time. Form and function became the key words, unnecessary decoration was scorned. This clean cut, sans serif with geometric shapes was most appropriate. The lighter weights of the Twentieth Century font family can be used for text setting; the Twentieth Century bold and condensed fonts are suitable for display in headlines and advertising. You can't go wrong with this classic Swedish calligraphy font, created by veteran designer Bo Berndal. He named Gertrud after his better half, but was also inspired by old handwritten documents: "Gertrud is a calligraphic letter design from the 16th century. I used it when I engrossed diplomas with a flat-nibbed pen in the 1980's. When I got my Mac I generated the typeface in Fontographer." Gertrud (the typeface) comes in three weights, with roman and italic. It is an OpenType creation, for both PC and Mac. Swedish type foundry T4 premieres new fonts every month.
