Traveling through the central and southern parts of Mexico a number of years ago, I couldn’t help but be impressed with the amazing architecture of the indigenous peoples. From the giant pyramids of Teotihuacan to the extensive and impressive layout of Chichén Itzá to the smaller-but-spectacular Monte Alban ruins in Oaxaca, creativity abounds. One of the things I most enjoyed were the carved stone friezes that ran around many of the more complete buildings. Oaxaca calls to mind those beautiful carvings and, strangely, Chinese writing.

Blomma is a hand-lettered all-caps display font with intricate botanical details. It includes full support for 201 languages, plus a full set of punctuation, numerals, and more, all drawn in the same botanical style. The uppercase and lowercase versions of each letter were drawn independently of one another, so that means you get two versions of each letter to play with. This is so helpful if you want to give a more authentic hand-lettered look to type with repeating letters. LTC Athena brings a somewhat “lost” hot-metal typeface back from obscurity into digital Opentype format. In fall 2012, printing historian Rich Hopkins contacted P22 type foundry regarding some inked type drawings he had just uncovered from his acquisition of the Baltimore-based “Baltotype” company some 20 years ago. It is a rare face whose original matrices were destroyed and thought fully lost. The drawings included a full upper and lower case set, numerals, basic punctuation, and alternate forms of some letters. The design is a narrow deco-flavored design from the 1950s with a curious avoidance of straight lines in the stems and main strokes. The face has been expanded to over 340 characters by Miranda Roth and includes ligatures as well as a full Pan-European character set. It is released through the Lanston division of P22 in consideration of its earlier incarnation as a metal typeface.

Created in 2010 by Olivier Gourvat, Mozziano is an elegant cross between geometric and round shapes. Its post-retro style opposes also fine and thick lines. This font can be used for very short texts however it is particularly effective for headlines in larger point sizes so that its details are emphasized. Mozziano best used in experimental designs. Mozziano contain an extensive character set that includes support for Central and Eastern European languages.

Blanchard is a revival and elaborate extension of Muriel, a 1950 metal face made by Joan Trochut-Blanchard for the Fonderie Typographique Française, that was published simultaneously by the Spanish Gans foundry under the name Juventud. Blanchard is a script that embodies the post-war narrow decorative aesthetic that would become the instantly recognizable feature of that era’s design. Its high ascenders corners make it the tuxedo of fonts, with slight and casual angles gradually revealing a trustworthy confidante, and sharp corners signaling a most expressive ally. Font. James Font. This digital version updates the original metal shapes to work within today’s design tools and designer needs. Some of the questionable metal shapes were optimized, plenty of alternates were added, and as many as five ending forms were built for most lowercase letters. Overall, this is one of the most useful packages for book cover, magazine and packaging design. Blanchard is available in all popular formats. Blanchard Pro combines all five fonts into a single one that makes use of OpenType’s cross-platform compatibility and programs that support OT’s fine typography features, like recent versions of Adobe InDesign and QuarkXpress.

Gothic fraktur inspired design, I wanted to resemble old german calligraphy but making it very geometric, so I used an isometric reticle during sketching. This is a display font, created for BIG sizes, non textual. I recommend it for branding, poster, logos or titles. Its very experimental -- it exists within the limits of legible and illegible reading. I choose the name “Garbancera” because gothic calligraphy has issues that are linked with dark, gloomy, lugubrious things or fear feelings, culturally in Mexico. I related this with death and for mexicans, death is something we celebrate and give us joy and happiness, annoying, the most representative Mexican characters, one of those is “La Calavera Garbancera” or better known as “La Catrina”, a clothes skeleton with only a hat. It was drawn this way to make a critic to all Mexicans at that time, that were poor but they wanted to represent a high lifestyle, “those that where to the bones, but with a French hat with ostrich feathers”. La Catrina was created by José Guadalupe Posada, a Mexican lithographer but also a newspaper illustrator. I think this is a beautiful font that can lead to great results, just use it wisely.

fracaso is an experimental font and was inspired by abstract / cubism artworks. My initial goal was to made it have a rather surreal and fancy mood. I painted the glyphs with seamless strokes and achieved an unusual style by developing an individual form for each glyph. So, due to contrasting various letter height and form each word have a unique, catchy, surreal rhythm. You may want to have fracaso font if you need to make a design with an abstract, surreal look for music / art subject. Great fit for posters, covers, clothes prints, packaging, logos, and everything you want to grant a fancy artistic mood. Progreso is a condensed, unicase, serif gothic type design inspired by the hand-lettering on Russian posters from the 1920s. Supports most European languages, including modern Greek and most languages that use the Cyrillic alphabet.

Romper is a slightly narrow handwritten sans in four weights and it is perfect if you want to convey a casual and friendly feel. It was designed with the idea to be used on comic books, mobile applications and children’s books, thus it has a Dancing Baseline version (Romper DB) and a Slanted version (each of them in four weights as well). The family is equipped with 450+ glyphs, has Latin Extended and Cyrillic Support (both Russian and Bulgarian) and a lovely set of extras. The family includes a lot of discretionary ligatures and alternate letters for more variety in the design. Overall, Romper is cute, amiable and really versatile, so it will fit most applications - think greeting cards, menus, merchandise, books, packaging, websites, etc.

Vallassina is named after Vallassina, a village in the valley of the upper tract of the river Lambro in northern Italy. The most important settlement in the area is the town of Asso, from which the valley takes its name. Spasell is a slang of Insubric language, spoken until 19th century by inhabitants of Vallassina, when they used to go out from the valley for business and they didn't want to be understood by the people. What makes this valley unique is that the locals use a unique whistle language to communicate to each other. Vallasina is confidently irreverent yet curiously attractive. How many ways can you use Vallassina to whistle to your neighbors? Vallasina is available in OpenType format.

An innovative combination between Persian Nastaliq calligraphy and Bannai script. Beshkasteh is designed so that the letters are attached to each other while going up the baseline. In result it creates an experience of typing a Kufic Bannai script like it is a Nastaliq or Tahriri calligraphic font. Once I had a young, very eager and interested designer in my employ. We got into talking about where our letterforms come from and the habits in perception we are used to. He did not quite believe me. So I said, let's try to design a typeface where everything is just the opposite of what we are used to. We really had a hard time, our habits crept up on us all the time. But after a couple of weeks we finally finished this typeface and wanted to call it crazytype, but my young apprentice ­ who did most of the manual labor ­ said Contype sounded crazier.
