Karol was designed in 2011 as a project in the MA in Advanced Typography from EINA/UAB, in Barcelona. It was born as text typeface inspired by the work of East European type designers. Two years later, Karol is ready for public release, in a collection of eight styles (four weights and matching italics) with high readability, strength and character. A few days before its publication, we received the news that Karol had been awarded the Certificate of Typographic Excellence (Judges’ Choice) of the Type Directors Club. Rasteroids Monospace is a typographic flashback to computing of the mid 1980s, when 9-pin dot-matrix printers were the state of the art, and most home computer displays were TVs hooked up to RF modulators. Rasteroids not only captures the dot-matrix printer look, but recreates the rasterized appearance of text on those lower-resolution monitors. Because of its fixed character width, Rasteroids Monospace is intended for use in accents or small areas of copy rather than long documents.

In the typedesign industry the terms ‘nova’, ‘neue’, ‘next’, ‘new’ are often used to refer to a typeface that has been modified in different ways: redesign, technical readjustments, greater number of characters, etc. At Latinotype we are now starting to use the word ‘niu’ to refer to these kinds of typefaces. Niu is an adaptation of the original word ‘new’, i.e., we have adapted this English word to the phonology and spelling of our own language but keeping the original meaning. Hernández Niu was designed by César Araya and Daniel Hernández. The font is based on the design of Hernández Bold: the thickest weight has been adapted to fit small text better. Five new styles have been added, ranging from neutral to more expressive fonts. Hernández Niu is a display slab serif font of thickened serifs, functional expressive ink-traps and true italics. Detailed forms and counterforms allow this typeface to be used in very large sizes. Hernández Niu is well-suited for publishing, small text and headlines. The first cuts of Kabel appeared in 1927, released by the German foundry Gebr. Klingspor. Like many of the typefaces that Rudolf Koch designed for printing use, Kabel is a carefully constructed and drawn. The basic forms were influenced by the Ancient Roman stone-carved letters, which consisted of just a few pure and clear geometric forms, such as circles, squares, and triangles. Koch also infused Kabel with some elements of Art Deco, making it appear quite different from other geometric modernist typefaces from the 1920s, like Futura. Linotype has two versions of Kabel in its library. Kabel has a shorter x-height, with longer ascenders and descenders, making it a bit truer to Koch's original design than the second version, ITC Kabel, which was designed by Victor Caruso. This version, also known in the United States as Cable, has a larger x-height, shorter ascenders and descenders, more weights ,and a diamond shaped i-dot. Citix Two Condensed is a new font derived from Citix Regular –a traditional pen-formed flowing script–, but containing a complete new set of capital letters, titling, ligatures and swashes. This font may be a good option to combine with Citix Regular, specially in fine tune and accurate works, suitable for commemorative letters, invitations cards, lettering, logotype design and the most elegant visual communications projects. Yalla PRO was inspired during a trip Mateusz Machalski took to Cairo (Egypt). The vast array of strong Arabic headline type, geometric forms working in interesting ways and contrasting with smooth, calligraphic details fed the design. Due to the same proportions and heights, Yalla works great together with Afronaut. Yalla was extended in 2024 by Mateusz Machalski & Małgorzata Bartosik with new weights.

By chance I stumbled upon an unfinished font in my fonts folder (while looking for something else). It had a stupid working name, but when I opened it, the font looked really nice! I have no idea why I never finished it. I renamed it Ukiyo Mind, because the font looked a bit like Japanese brush strokes. Ukiyo is a Japanese term which roughly translates as ‘the fleeting/transient world’. In mediaval Japan, the word was associated with Buddhism, but later it was used to describe the urban lifestyle and the pleasure seeking aspects of it. Nowadays it refers to a ‘living in the moment’ state of mind. Ukiyo Mind is a really nice brush font, which I probably made using Chinese ink and a brush. It comes with extensive language support and a set of alternates for the lower case glyphs.

Original type work designed in unconventional technique by type and graphic designer Yuri Gulitov. The shapes of signs were built up in a very specific routine. At the first stage signs were drawn on the black sheets of paper by the PVA adhesive, then a white sheets was placed above, and finally after some time the white sheets were torn off. The scraps of white paper presented the signs. Inverse style shows hypothetic result of tearing off the black sheets. The style together or separately can be used in display and advertizing works for demonstration of fight between the forces of good and evil or vice versa. Analog version of the font was awarded by diploma on Third International Biennale of Graphic Design “Golden Bee”. Digital version was released by ParaType in 2008.

With the Josef K *, Julia Sysmäläinen continues her artistic debate on Franz Kafka’s writing style. This time the designer of FF Mister K is not drawn to Kafka’s literary works created at night but to those the writer produced at daytime as a high-ranking, confident bureaucrat – Dr Franz Kafka. The typefaces Josef K “Paneuropean” and “Strong European” echoe Kafka’s prestigious status at the Workmen’s Accident Insurance Institute of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Their ductus, originating from a broad-nibbed ink pen combines a clear, self-confident stroke with the calligraphic features so typical for Franz Kafka’s handwriting. While both typefaces are more straightforward and bolder than the wonderfully erratic fonts of the FF Mister K family Josef K Paneuropean is best characterized as a semibold handwriting textface. Josef K Strong European, Sysmäläinen’s latest “K”-accomplishment, provides an ideal complement to it as a distinctly bold display face – great for headlines, product names and branding. It combines perfectly not only with Josef K Paneuropean but also with all the FF Mister K textfaces. Both Josef K Paneuropean and Josef K Strong European have Western, Central European and Extended Cyrillic character sets. With more than 2500 glyphs they support over 100 languages. *Kafka’s persona Josef K is a leading bank officer – reminiscent of the author himself – in the novel The Trial.
