When Hal Taylor saw the 1930 logo for the Stetson Shoe Company of Weymouth, Massachusetts, he didn't run out and buy a pair of loafers. Instead, he seized on this striking example of an Art Deco logotype as the basis for a new typeface design. “I was impressed with the delicate and sophisticated letter forms,” Taylor recalls, “particularly the enlarged cap S -- in any other case it would have seemed unbalanced, but in the context of this logo, it worked perfectly.” All the letters in the original all-caps Stetson Shoe logo were rendered with condensed proportions except the O, which was a perfect circle. While the prominent O added visual interest to the logo, Taylor knew that such a character would limit his typeface to display applications. For versatility's sake, he drew his O for ITC Stepp with the same proportions as the rest of the alphabet. Taylor also gave the logotype's inverted S a more traditional design, but kept the original as an alternate character in the OpenType font. Taylor's toughest challenge during the design process was creating a lowercase. “A good type design tells you what it wants to be,” he says, “and after a little while the Stepp caps began to tell me what the lowercase should look like.” Taylor's lowercase is slightly more conventional than the caps. The jaunty g" and almost upside-down "s" add subtle charm, while the capital letters provide the broader gestures of Stepp's personality. Together, they create a versatile and distinctive typeface design. One of Hal Taylor's first jobs was as a photo-lettering typographer in Philadelphia, setting headlines and creating custom lettering. This was followed by a stint doing finished lettering for John Langdon, whose ambigrams appear in Dan Brown's best-selling novel, Angels & Demons. Today, Taylor works as a graphic designer in the publishing industry, but he still finds time to create an occasional hand-lettered book jacket, and draw handsome typeface designs. ITC Stepp is available in four weights, ranging from Light to Ultra Bold. All four weights have companion italics, and the lightest three weights also offer a suite of small caps."

Kris Holmes and Janice Prescott digitalized some letters from this book and some from a Grotesk font in the style of Frutiger. A computer filled in the blanks and the designers then gave the font its finishing touches by hand.

The idea that mathematical precision and the supposed "purity" of geometric forms are part of the discourse of us graphic designers is not new. Studying typography for some time now and learning about all the small alterations and adjustments that this geometry undergoes to better adapt to the imperfect human eye, I found myself with a new way of seeing things. Compasso is, in a way, a result of my growth as a designer. Established and recognized fonts like Futura, Avenir, and their predecessors (including Tempo - published by the Ludlow foundry in the early 20th century) informed the result of Compasso at some level. Others opened my mind to possibilities. Mallory, Azo Sans, the font designed for Audi by Bold Monday, and many other contemporary sans-serif fonts that left me speechless are also responsible for details present in this font. From the first sketch, the family grew on both sides, gaining condensed and extended counterparts. From there - and from a brilliant insight from designer Nicole Rauen - I learned that Compasso was not about geometry. Compasso is about rhythm. It's about the rhythmic movement that provides a foundation, supports, and also makes you dance and swing. My musical taste is too eclectic, I can go from classical to funk in less than two songs on Spotify. Compasso is also eclectic. It's a font to take your project anywhere, a record to listen to on any occasion.

The font series Andron MC introduces a new feature to the repertoire of the Andron family: middlecase glyphs (intermediate between upper- and lowercase) – and uncial letters. Middlecase glyphs reach a medium height compared to full caps height and lowercase x-height. However, ‘uncial’ means the historic transitional lettershapes of the medieval ages which have gained no status in the bicameral typographic system of modern times. In all three of the Andron MC fonts middlecase (“MC”) glyphs dwell on the lowercase positions. These are coined in uncial fashion in the MC Uncial and MC Medieval fonts but appear as capital glyphs in MC Capital. The same variation occurs with the uppercase positions: whereas standard Roman/capital glyphs are there in MC Uncial and MC Capital, MC Medieval features uncial majuscules here instead. At the end that makes three different combinations of uncial and capital sorts. These fonts can be used for a great variety of purposes. The uncial sets are particularly well-suited for any typographic matter related to the middle ages. Collateral Damage is a classic splatter font from the earlier days of the internet. A consistent fan favorite since its initial release in 1999, this ink-dripping font was inspired by the gonzo art of Ralph Steadman. It looks hand-painted, like graffiti. Or crazy scary, like splattered blood. It was made by designer Chris Hunt who lives in the Canadian North with the polar bears. Coastal is a typeface made up of 12 fonts, it is a display sans family with some cues that give it a fun looking and informal type family. Coastal has rounded, rough, hand and outline versions so there are a lot of options to play around and have some fun with. Coastal is great for headlines, posters and artwork where larger type is needed. It also has some neat alternate glyphs that give the user a few more additional options to get creative with.

The sheet music for "I Used to be Color Blind" (from the 1938 Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers movie "Carefree") had its title crafted in ornate Art Deco hand lettering. Keeping the original letter forms, the interior embellishment was simplified to a dot-and-line pattern [eliminating a secondary squiggly line] for a cleaner look. The type design is now digitally available as Performing Arts JNL, in both regular and oblique versions. For those who prefer no ornamentation, there are also regular and oblique versions in solid form.

This handmade-looking, playful type is inspired by the titles of a few old Czech movies for children. With its irregularity and numerous alternates, Rumburak simulates live handwriting. When the font is used in OpenType-savvy applications, the 4 variants of glyphs are automatically alternated to achieve a random-like effect. The spacing and kerning were carefully fine-tuned by Igino Marini and the kerning table contains kerning pairs for use with the random feature turned on or off. I’m not trying to be sarcastic or ironic. But after looking at fridge magnets, postcards, posters and stickers with clever words about love and happiness, I suddenly found them all cheesy. You may have guessed it by now: I’m not into clever words like those…but I do respect if they brighten someones’s life. This font, however, was made to brighten people’s life by being great as a soft, handmade and organic headline font! Use for your favourite quotes, or whatever needs a legible and clear presentation!

Thirteen or 14 years ago I admired, out loud, a book I found on a shelf in Matt Carter's office. That Christmas I was pleasantly surprised to find that Matt had found another copy of the book and he gave it to me. The book was about the life of Oswald Cooper and it contained numerous specimens of Cooper's lettering jobs. Among them was an interesting image of 7 letter that spelled out the word 'Robusto'. These letters were used as the model for the font Robusto. All I needed to do was develop 221 other glyphs to finish the font.

I seem to be in my comic book font fase. It's not that I have tons of comics lying around (I actually have none), but when I was a kid, I used to read them all the time. Laser Eyes is a handmade comic book font. It is a little rounded, a little fat and very useful. You don't really have to put it to work in an actual comic book; it will feel at home just about anywhere.
