Urania is not an adaption, but a new interpretation of familiar and successful formal features, transformed into a contemporary look. Janice is a revival and expansion of a 1960s Mecanorma film type called Putty Bold. It’s thick, flowing, happy and oozes psychedelia. Unlike many art nouveau/hippy faces of the era, this font comes with a lowercase that expands its functionality to quite a few applications, like design aimed at kids and young adults. The P22 Platten font family has been revisited and expanded by designer Colin Kahn. Platten is based on lettering found in German fountain pen practice books from the 1920s (you may have seen the similar Speedball books in the US). This round tip pen lettering is comparable to the basic forms used in grammar school teaching alphabets, but with a few original characteristics. The Italic version has even more of these unusual features. Geometric and simple yet casual and timeless. Perfect for many uses.

And Tempus Sans is just Tempus with the serif surgically removed, yet the proportions of the characters work nicely," says Grimshaw. Because of its rough quality, the typeface works best in larger point sizes, yet maintains its characters even in smaller sizes."

Meet Byra! A new approach to a decorative typeface. This typeface has asymmetrical terminals (round), which means than has serifs, but not in every side of the letterforms. The mix between both classic and modern elements, as terminals and the inverted contrast, gives the typeface a strong personality. Byra contains two weights, regular and bold, it’s a display typeface and great for headlines, branding and editorial proposes

It's not a new idea - combining two typefaces into one design, but when it works, it makes for an interesting novelty font. Nightcap JNL is a fun typeface that can be used by itself, or along with the two original fonts that comprise it (Parkitecture JNL and Typesetter Oblique JNL) to create some wonderful retro headlines. Nightcap JNL contains only the alphabet, numbers and basic punctuation.

Matryoshka is a display layering type family which is inspired by the Russian wooden doll. The family contains eight different weights from XXS (thin) to XXL (fat) + Pregnant (all in one). The design is based on an elaborate and complex grid, so each font fits perfectly into the other. With the Matryoshka family the typographer can create millions of new solutions. Play with it!

A Japanese design firm called Maniackers put together a typeface design in 2001, which they called Snail. This typeface is based on that design, with a few tasty modifications and some industrial-strength kerning, so that the letters literally slither across the page. This font contains the complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252) plus support for Central European (Unicode 1250) languages as well.

The idea was to create a package containing prominent tag styles of graffiti strongholds like New York, Berlin and Paris. Shik (New York), Deon (Paris) and Etan (Berlin) came together to show the typical tag styles of their respective metropolitan areas. The fonts were digitized, spaced, kerned and programmed by Hannes von Döhren. The Subway Types are highly equipped. Each one consists of 4 alphabets (Uppercase, Lowercase, Small Caps & Swash). They also include ligatures and some specials like underlines and a huge range of accents for a wide language support. With the OpenType technology these features can be applied easily. For those who never used the OpenType features, we created the Std (Standard) and the SC (Small Caps) versions of the fonts. They contain the same basic characters like the OT versions but are split in two fonts. Hence you don’t need any OpenType knowledge to use the Std and SC fonts.

The freeflowing and quite feminine style of this script appealed to me, but it needed a bit of taming. The Artimas family is the new book design font family developed out of Aramus. These new serif typefaces are readable and graceful — part of my development of a series of book families. Aramus was very popular for a single font release of a text font. This new book font family retains the looseness of the original with radically different font metrics and many shape “corrections”. In fact, Artimas continues a genuine new path for this foundry This new font family for book design continues a turn toward more “traditional” x-heights of around a third of the point size.The Artimas print production font family is six new OpenType Pro fonts with Caps, lowercase, small caps, & figures to go with each of those character sets. There are many ligatures, a few swashes, fractions, numerators, denominators, and ordinals to infinity. This family of fonts is a joy to read and easy to use for text or display.

Shirah 25 started as a freehand study, while experimenting with ink and new nibs. Later on, when David decided to have a digital version, he drew it merely with the tablet, trying to keep the spirit of the ink and the nib. Shirah 25 is an OpenType/TTF Unicode font.

Originally, this 1870s wood type font was called Armenian. We came across a showing of alphabet at the South Street Seaport in New York, bought it and immediately drew the additional characters needed to make the font. We used it for some circus program work that was part of our livelihood.

As "Zenith" means, in an astronomical context, the highest point reached by a celestial body, my new typeface raises its drawing for carry it to the highest expression. In an effort to design a singular graphic and visual letters system, the contrasts and proportions of “Zenit” boosts up and are squeezed as much as possible, resulting in a very particular aesthetic, while still maintaining a certain grotesque reminiscence. Given its dynamic, postmodern, daring and futuristic style, “Zenit” is an ideal typeface for use in designs that want to discover new space worlds full of color and speed, still unexplored. “Zenit, the typeface that rockets you!.”

Pocketknife is a simple grid-based titling font on it’s surface, but it has a surprisingly prolific set of features under the surface. The most notable of these features is an abundant set of ligatures that give Pocketknife it’s unique look. There are very few kerning pairs contained within Pocketwatch, and these ligatures fill in most gaps that could be created by letters with more empty space, such as L and T, and also give a more playful look to an otherwise sharp-edged typeface. Pocketknife also contains with 2 full sets of alternate characters, one pairing with the uppercase set and one pairing with the lowercase—available as OpenType stylistic alternates or individually in the Glyphs panel. Pocketknife Regular is designed to be used on it’s own, while the Inline and Base fonts are designed to be used as a simple layered combination. The Base font is nearly identical to Regular, but contains a few specially adjusted characters that better accommodate the Inline style. Pocketknife Outline is a combination of the Inline/Base styles, to be used individually. Pocketknife is sharp, but playful. Simple, but sophisticated. Sporty, technical, and aggressive, yet elegant and fun. Pocketknife, while simple at first glance, is a deceivingly versatile typeface.

Kanna Aoki drew the letters for MVB Emmascript while on a picnic near the Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Mark van Bronkhorst adapted the writing as a font that maintains a very natural scrawl. Later a bold weight was added. MVB Emmascript has been used to add a lighthearted, human touch to everything from fiction paperbacks to potato chip packaging. The typeface is named for Aoki's 1968 Volkswagen, Emma.

The goal with South Island was to make a font that looked authentically handwritten. Each character had to perfectly flow into the next and maintain a nice balance between variation and legibility. The typeface retains all the texture and grit of the original handwritten characters, making it especially powerful when used for large headers. South Island comes in a regular version, and a second version which contains alternate versions of each letter A-Z (both upper and lowercase). Try pairing it up with a more traditional serif or sans serif font for endless possibilities.

I have completely redone the spacing in this font, making the sidebearings more conventional. And after replacing the kerning with fresh pairs working together with the new spacing the font looks like a real gem. I love it! The inline version has a wider spacing after the letters CEK = no connecting words. Otherwise just as lovely and retro! Nick Curtis says: "Here’s a strange hybrid: I took the lower case from the formal script font Stuyvesant, straightened out its rather extreme 22° slant, and combined them with caps from the font Bellevue, again making them upright, and adding an inline effect. The result is a font that flows very nicely, with a nice balance between clean lowercase characters and swashy caps. Thanks to Deb Dunbar for naming this font. Fontleroy Brown is the solid version, produced at the request of the King of Ding, Jeff Levine."
