Heller Sans JNL is based on the main letterforms of an experimental alphabet designed by Steven Heller; noted author of over 170 books on design and visual culture. Some modifications were made in turning his design into a digital font. In his own words, here is the background to this typeface: “I recently recovered this from the junk heap. It is a yellowing photostat of my first and only typeface design (1969-70). Total folly! At the time I was smitten by Art Moderne lettering. I called it “Klaus Boobala Bold” because I liked the K and B. I’ve lost the letters S through Z, which were made. The letters were drawn with compass, Techno pen (that frequently clogged). as well as a triangle and T-square. The inline and outline made no real logical sense. I based the design, in part, on Kabel, Avant Garde and it was a product of whatever I could accomplish with those tools. The caps-only alphabet was photographed and produced as a film negative that was cut in foot-long strips and spliced to fit on a Typositor reel. Sadly, the negatives made for the font were too brittle and the splice snapped apart in the Typositor. I worked on it for well over a month and used the face only once. I realized with this attempt, like so many other times I attempted different challenges, that type design — indeed mechanical drawing — was not my strong suit.” Heller Sans JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The “Tipo Metro CDMX” typeface was developed by Lance Wyman as part of the “Metro” project since the 1970s, and is one of the key elements of the visual culture of transportation of the Metro Collective Transportation System (STC Metro). This style has become the iconic fundamental of public transportation for the residents of Mexico City. In this edition, the lowercase types are an “unofficial” adaptation for the Tipo Metro CDMX, enriching the typography with a visual style of highs and lows, so the base design is dispensed with as my own work to emphasize the lowercase types exclusively, In addition, some accentuation characters have been added, extending their use to other languages. The types are a new proposal by Ixipcalli in the current year 2023.

Protest is inspired by protest posters and the power of the people! Each glyph is written by hand with a Sharpie® Magnum marker on big sheets of paper. It is designed to fit more into the poster and still be legible for the media from a block away. It's bold, slightly condensed, and neatly drawn with love and conviction, with the warm imperfection that comes from being hand drawn. Protest consists of over 1,430 glyphs. Herr Pfister was a printer in the city of Bamberg Bavaria. He is known to have published nine works. And it has been contentiously argued that he printed the “36 line Bible.” He was responsible for two innovations. The first was printing in his native German language and the second was the use of woodblock prints to add illustrations to the text. These were both first with the use of movable type. He was heavily influenced by Gutenberg’s typefaces but there are a range of notable and also subtle differences between the two men’s output. He was known to be active in the industry from about 1460 to his death in 1466. This font was specifically based on his "Biblia Paperum."

The first design of Elensans consisted of 4 styles that are including two weights and their italics which I designed in my student years in 2002. It was designed with a little Art Nouveau style touch with inspired by classical geometric based fonts such as Friz Quadrata and Eras. It was updated with according to the orientations of the day in 2012 and eventually it took its final form with actual touches in 2020. The Device interpretation of the classic “Grot” thick/thin sans style. Unlike the traditional models on which it is based, Grange takes a rational, consistent approach across wide range of weights and widths for contemporary use. The "Text" weights are designed for use at smaller sizes, and have more open character shapes and spacing for legibility. The font includes alternative curved and straighter versions of key characters, most obviously the lower-case ‘g' and capital ‘R', allowing the font to take on either a sharper or warmer, more playful appearance. These can be toggled on or off using the ‘Alts' feature in Illustrator, or ‘Stylistc Sets’ in Indesign. Contains proportional, lining and tabular numerals. Perfect for both headline and text.

Road Stencil is a font based on painted street markings. The letters are stretched roughly six times their normal height so that when viewed from an angle, the text is seen as proportional. If you're looking to Photoshop a street scene, this is your font. This is an all caps font, but the letters were copied to lower-case for convenience. In these forms, I've preferred to use horizontal and diagonal dividers instead of verticals which can weaken the fonts readability. This font embodies a pleasant aesthetic while maintaining a coherent and believable feel. Check out the 'Rough' version of this font, which has more of a 'drawn on asphalt' look. The rough version's lower case letters have eroded alternates.

Garvo is based on old Hollywood movie posters, vintage film credit designs and pays homage to Herb Lubalin's Serif Gothic font & lettering. This is why Garvo is named after the acclaimed international actress Greta Garbo. Cut as a private version for the Nonesuch Press in the early 1930s, Monotype Bulmer was first released for general use in 1939. Based on types, cut by William Martin circa 1790, used by the Printer, William Bulmer, in a number of prestigious works, including Boydell's Shakespeare. Martins types combined beauty with functionality. Narrower and with a taller appearance than Baskerville, it anticipated the modern face of Bodoni but retained vital qualities from the old face style. This new digital version of the Bulmer font family was drawn by Monotype following extensive research into the previous hot metal versions and a study of Bulmer's printed works. Additional weights have been designed together with a wide range of Expert and alternative characters.

Yseult is a ultra-romantic, elegant handwritten font, reminiscent of pre-Raphaelite beauties and classical paintings. It refers to the opera Tristan und Isolde (also spelt as Yseul, Isolda etc.) in three acts by Richard Wagner. The opera was based largely on the romance by Gottfried von Strassburg. Its design was influenced by Genevieve and, less directly, by Silver Dagger. Between 1958 and 1961, Herbert Thannhaeuser developed the typeface Liberta for Typoart as a broadly conceived newspaper type which established itself quickly. Its positive adaptation by publishing houses and printing companies was based, next to its agreeable and reader-friendly general impression, also on a relatively robust typeface character which does not sacrifice its power of impression and elegance even when confronted with poor paper and printing qualities. In the 1970s, a bullish and robust design style took over the area of consumer goods which then required a corresponding advertising face. Harald Brödel re-worked the Liberta Ultra for phototypesetting, and, with great sensitivity, designed a matching cursive variation. Both types work especially well as an attention getter for advertising and for emphasis purposes.

Earlier this year, my eyes fell upon a discarded wedding invitation on the sidewalk. A closer look at it revealed that it had at one point been victimized by rain. Some of the fancy script letters were not quite broken, but sort of melted and run-down, while the rest were still somewhat intact. That's how Scroll was conceived, as an idea for a script where thicks and thins blend to produce a wet appearance. Unlike most available broken scripts, the Scroll script was originally drawn in its own juiced context, and not based on any existing script. This font is great for atmospheric antiquity, deep natural poetry, still life captioning, gothic music posters and collateral, or horror literature and poetry covers.

The Flowers Family is a collection of 3 typefaces in two weights, meticulously drawn by British designer Roy Preston. This is the rounded, softer version of Canada Type's popular Press Gothic. Originally done in 2011 for a global publisher, this font has already seen plenty of magazine and book cover action, perhaps even more than the sharp condensed face that spawned it. And like Press Gothic, Soft Press comes with small caps and biform/unicase forms, in addition to the main upper/lowercase set. The extended language support covers a wide range, including Greek and Cyrillic, Turkish, Baltic, Central and Eastern European languages, Celtic/Welsh and Esperanto. This 1538 Schwabacher was based on a font used by Georg Rhau in Wittemberg (Germany) to print Des Babsts Hercules [...], a German pamphlet against roman catholicism written by Johannes Kymeus. The original font has a relatively complete set of characters including “long s”, but also the special german types like k, fl or ‰, ˆ, ¸.... A few omissions were remedied, and accented letters were added. A render sheet, enclosed with font files, help to identify them on keyboard. Although this font remains clear and easy to read from 8 or 9 points on screen, it is clearly designed for print works.

Echelon is based upon 1970s Eastern European ‘pipe-style’ typefaces. This style of Communist consumer typography came from what, at the time, seemed like a bizarre mirror universe: Existing alongside the West, similar-but-different, essentially unknowable.
