British designer Jeremy Tankard began Blue Island in 1996 with the idea of creating a completely ligature-based roman typeface, an original but complex task that took years to realize. Individually, Blue Island's letters can appear a bit dismembered, but when set together, they are clearly transformed into words which fall in waves down the page. One of my favorites. Rundgotisch is a easy to read for eyes that are accustomed to roman letterforms, yet keeps in touch with its blackletter roots. It was released around 1900 by Schelter & Giesecke of Leipzig, Germany. Can be used to set short text passages and pairs easily with many different decorative initials of the period. A very useful typeface. Don't leave home without it. According to Bringhurst, Schelter & Giesecke was formed in 1819 by Johann Gottfied Schelter and Christian Friedrich Giesecke. This old German printing house was sucked up by state-owned Typoart in 1946, after Marshall Zhukov and the Red Army had established Soviet dominion over East Germany.

Guaruja Grotesk is the first Tipogra Fio family for headlines & body copy. The grotesque form factor is much inspired in the Modernism movement from the mid of 20th Century but the Italic weight is a great cursive contrast aside the Roman ones so you can make very brutalist layouts or craft humanist projects, without losing the communication between all the family. Do not be afraid to type words with uppercase I and lowercase L because this last one has its own personality so do others glyphs like Italic lowercase G, Y and K and the straight corners in the Roman uppercase A, K, V, W, X, Y and Z. The same curves and corners are transferred to the numbers, symbols and so on. If your text is in a latin alphabet even though has lots of diacritcs, Guaruja may get it done! If you’re making a mathematical equation, it also can make it. If there’s a signaling project with lots of destinations, trust the arrows to help with together with the whole family.

Tertius, with its high ascenders and clubbed serifs, is a modern interpretation of the classic Carolingian style (7th - 9th centuries AD). There was no capital form in the Carolinian hand and Roman square capitals were originally used with it. The Carolingian hand began, after a while, to develop more cursive tendencies as people looked for a way to speed up the writing process. I have “capitalized” on this trend and have devised an appropriate and dramatic set of flowing capitals for this family. With its elegant swashes and bold letter shapes, Tertius embodies the romance of medieval life, of knights, castles, and chivalry. Tertius comes in four styles:- -- Regular: with elegant, smoothly penned characters; -- Crenellated: written with a scratchy pen over rough parchment -- many drops of ink and blotches have been left on the parchment (“Crenellated” means battlements -- the rough protrusions on the top of castle walls); and -- Romantic: the capitals have been loosely overwritten generating a contemporary version of illuminated capitals. -- Illuminated: richly decorated illuminated capitals for use with Tertius Regular (28 characters) All fonts have been carefully crafted, letterspaced and kerned and contain full character sets of 237 characters.

The Magellan font family is a roman in the Swedish Grace tradition. And since the Swedish language has long words, Magellan is a bit narrower than most romans. Magellan was an honorable prize winner in the Morisawa (Japan) international typeface design competition 1993.

Latimer is one of a series exploring a fusion of Roman and Gothic forms. Characteristics of each genre can be seen: the fluid tapering serifs and rounded shapes of the Roman form, contrasted with the angular diamond and hexagonal shapes of Gothic.

Matthew Carter has been refining his design for Alisal for so long, he says, that when he was asked to complete the design for the Monotype Library, it was almost as if he were doing a historical revival of his own typeface. The illusion even extended to changes in his work process: although he now does all his preliminary and final drawing on screen, the first trial renderings of Alisal were done as pencil renderings. Alisal is best classified as an Italian old style design. Originally created between the late 15th and mid-16th centuries in northern Italy, the true Italian old styles were some of the first roman types. They tend to be the most calligraphic of serifed faces, with the axis of their curved strokes inclined to the left, as if drawn with a flat-tipped pen or brush. These designs offer sturdy, free-flowing and heavily bracketed serifs, short descenders, and a modest contrast in stroke weight. Alisal has nearly all the classic Italian old style character traits, plus a few quirks of its own. It is calligraphic in nature, with more of a pen-drawn quality than faces like Palatino or Goudy Old Style. It is more rough-hewn than either Goudy's Kennerley or Benton's Cloister, and is generally heavier in weight than most of the other Italian old style designs. One place where Alisal makes a clean break with traditional old style designs is in the serifs. While sturdy and clearly reflecting pen-drawn strokes, Alisal's serifs have no bracketing and appear to be straight strokes crossing the main vertical. Like Caslon or Trajanus, Alisal is a handsome design when viewed as a block of copy. Ascenders are tall and elegant, and serve as a counterpoint to the robust strength of the rest of the design. Alisal is available as a small family of roman and bold with a complementary italic for the basic roman weight, providing all that is needed for the majority of text typography. Alisal is not as well-known as some of Carter's other typefaces, but this lovely and long-incubated design was certainly worth the wait.

Forum Title was originally designed by Frederic Goudy in 1911. It was intended to be the heading font used for a book set in Kennerley. Based on inscriptional Roman stone cut capitals, this face is true to the early Roman forms which did not have a lower case. Forum exemplifies the classic Roman letterform at its finest. If a lower case were desired, Forum Title can be paired with Goudy Oldstyle for a harmonious hybrid font.

Copenhagen has been in need of a typeface that unites the city’s many visual expressions. The three designers Morten Rostgaard Olsen, Henrik Birkvig and Ole Søndergaard have designed and developed the typeface FP København. Clearface Gothic first appeared in 1910, designed by Morris Fuller Benton, the world-famously prolific typeface artist. In addition to Clearface Gothic, Benton also designed classics like Franklin Gothic, Century Expanded, and many other types. Clearface Gothic is a sans serif face with light forms displaying the Zeitgeist of the turn of the 20th century. Distinguishing characteristics are the open forms of the a" and "c," the arched "k," and the upward-tilting horizontal stroke of the "e." The relatively narrow typeface, with its open inner white spaces, is extremely legible even in small point sizes. There is no accompanying italic."

The story is a parody of the many non-fictional mountaineering chronicles and tells the adventures of a group of incompetent climbers, trying to conquer the highest mountain in the world. The Handel Gothic? typeface has been a mainstay of graphic communication for over 40 years - all the while looking as current as tomorrow. Designed by Don Handel in the mid-1960s, and used in the 1973 United Airlines logo developed by Saul Bass, Handel Gothic was an instant success when released to the graphic design community. Its generous lowercase x-height, full-bodied counters and square proportions make the design highly readable at a wide range of sizes. Handel Gothic's slightly idiosyncratic character shapes gave the face a futuristic look 40 years ago that retains its power today. In addition, its Uncial-like lowercase is instantly identifiable - and unique among sans serif typestyles. Award-winning type designer Rod McDonald was attracted to the simple, decisive forms of the original, but he felt the design needed to be refined and updated. ?One of my goals was to bring a modern typographic discipline to what was really an old phototypesetting font.? To achieve his goal, McDonald re-proportioned every character and balanced the delicate relationship between the curves and the straight strokes. He also added a number of alternate characters to extend the range of the design. ?I wanted to give designers a large enough character set so they wouldn't feel constrained in what they could do. I want them to be able to play with the fonts, not just set words.? This type face fills one of the gaps between the world of Roman alphabets and that of linear alphabets. The first to be designed was the set of upper-case letters. The expression of these characters cannot conceal that they were originally intended only for the sculptor's use, as a type face for three-dimensional inscriptions. Their width proportions reflect a dialogue between the contemporary feeling and the legacy of classical Roman inscriptions. The type face was later complemented with a set of lower-case letters and elaborated into further designs. Its clear, concise letter forms end with small serifs which not only make the type face more refined, but above all anchor the individual letter signs visually to the horizontal of the text line. The austere construction of the majority of the letters is balanced by the more exuberant, humanizing forms of the most frequently used letters "a"; "e". (The three variants of the lower-case "e" enable to create rhythmically differentiated texts.) The letters in which a straight stroke is connected with an arch are designed in two ways. That means that the letters "n", "h","m" and the group of letters "b","d","p","q" are conceived in a different way. Thus an interesting tension is created in the structure of the text, which, however, does not endanger legibility. The economizing, slightly narrowed design of this type face predetermines its use for the setting of usual texts. In larger sizes, however, it produces a rather serious, even solemn, impression.

M Kai is a design inspired by the popular Kaiti developed in contemporary China. MKai adopts many features of Kaishu, one of the many Chinese writing scripts and calligraphic style. Yet writing style and constructions have been well-unified to meet quality as typeface. Its strokes has relatively heavier stroke beginning and finishing, as well as thinner middle part. It is catered for fine print with little conglutination. Its medium weight makes it more visible at distance and pretty versatile in use. Zhonggong are tightly built with ample character spacing for good individual character recognition. It is best suited for formal body text, set upright (non-slanted), non-condensed.

Stockholm is a contemporary roman typeface designed by Paul Shaw in collaboration with Garrett Boge in 1998. Its strong yet refined roman character shapes were inspired by twentieth century Swedish lettering. The face is appropriate for both text and display settings. Zombie Apocalypse is way more versatile as its name would suggest. It might be used as a horror font (red color tones in horror games, movie covers) or in ads for an Offroad Experience Tour (or wherever it comes to dirt, mud and spatters in combination with brown tones). When used with light blue/red/yellow/orange colors, the font can express creativity and freedom (on fashion, inspirational art and advertising) because it is not bound to classic straight-lined fonts. In various shades of gray or in black, it can be used to support a "worn out" look.
