Because ebooks will not normally accept .otf fonts, and they don't support Opentype features, this font family was designed to be used for the ebook conversions of print books. It uses old style figures. The italics are slanted a bit more. And Heavy is a little bolder than the bold in Contenu Book.

Morris Fuller Benton's 1935 offering from ATF, entitled Raleigh Gothic Condensed, inspired this ultracompact masterpiece. In 1903, faced with the welter of sanserif typefaces offered by ATF, Morris Fuller Benton designed News Gothic, which became a 20th-century standard. In 1995 Tobias Frere-Jones studied drawings in the Smithsonian and started a redesign. Cyrus Highsmith reviewed News Gothic, and with the Font Bureau studio expanded it into Benton Sans, a far-reaching new series, with matched weights and widths, offering performance well beyond the limits of the original; FB 1995-2012

Isbellium is a sans serif version of Dick Isbell’s Americana type, designed in 1967 and the last type cut in metal by the American Type Founders Co. (ATF). Isbellium retains the large x-height, open character, wide stance and elegance of Americana, but with a quieter voice and polite authority. Isbellium is a display face with broad Latin support along with small caps, fraction support and other typographic niceties are included in the ten font family.

Europa Grotesque is a condensed sans serif font family that was originally designed by Sam Ardell (TP) in the 1950’s for the Techni-Process Collection. Steve Jackaman (ITF) acquired the rights to the TP Collection in 1991 and produced Europa Grotesque in its digital form in 1994. Europa Grotesque has impressive impact at display and subhead sizes, and its geometric forms sustain that distinctiveness in both all-caps and lowercase. William Caslon’s design as made regular by ATF at the beginning of this century.

Bernhard Modern was designed in 1937 by Lucian Bernhard for ATF. It is his personal version of the small x-height engravers’ old styles popular at the time. A perennial best-seller, Bernhard Modern remains popular in a wide variety of design and typesetting uses more that 60 years after its initial release. Bitstream’s version offers a wide array of typographer sets, including alternates, extensions, small caps and italic swashes.

A September 29, 1920 edition of The San Diego Union ran the headline “Cicotte Confesses Baseball Fraud; Eight White Sox Players Indicted”. The White Sox baseball scandal was the first to reveal illegal gambling on the game. However, the headline itself was set in a bold slab serif type style [likely ATF Foster] which served as the model for Good Reporting JNL; which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

A Dancing Fool is not always meant as a positive thing - but in this case it is 100 percent positive and innocent. It's just about someone who is dancing in a foolish way. A good way to describe this font, because it is silly looking, but not in any offensive way!

French Calligraphic JNL is actually more semi-calligraphic in nature. Its name takes a descriptive liberty because of the sharp, angled pen strokes of the original hand lettered example found in the 1930s publication "100 Alphabets Publicitaires" by M. Moullet. Gaffer is a simple little font! The backward slant, large x-height and short ascenders/descenders give the font a casual handwritten look. Fox Grotesque is another member of the Fox Family and stylistically finds itself between Fox TRF (with some extreme curly lowercase letters), and Fox Sans (a cold geometric sans-serif). While the typeface is intended for use in display sizes, it is also quite legible in text and is well suited for editorials. Fox Grotesque is released in OpenType format with extended support for most Latin languages and includes some opentype features – proportional/tabular, lining/oldstyle figures, slashed zero, ligatures, fractions.

This quasi-Chancery classic is a revival of Walter MacKay’s Heritage typeface, made for ATF in 1952. Walter is clean and legible free-flowing calligraphy with a subdued, conservative and traditional letterform base that can be used in large sizes for posters, covers and packaging, as well as in relatively small sizes for personalized letters, poetry and quotables. The Clearface types were originally designed by Morris Fuller Benton in 1907. Their forms expressed the Zeitgeist of the turn of the 20th century; typical and distinguishing characteristics are the forms of the a" and the "k." The ATF version did not include an accompanying Italic. In 1978, ITC's Victor Caruso was licensed by ATF to develop a new serif typeface and matching italic based on the forms of Clearface. The result was ITC Clearface, a serif typeface with marked stroke contrast and italic weights. The teardrop-formed endings of the lowercase a, c and f (also found in Caslon) define the character of the face. The type's design is also distinguished by its small -- almost slab -- serifs, a large x-height, and little stroke contrast. ITC Clearface, with its historical touch, is good for both texts and headlines, but its slightly condensed nature performs at its best when it is allowed its space.
