It is contemporary designer type, made from the struck steel hammers of an art deco san serif face transferred from a mechanical 1926 Royal Portable typewriter. It has an obsessively complete commercial roman character set ––for the pre-opentype environment of the late 1990's. Yes, it has that great “Monopoly Game” question mark -- and all on a period-piece typewriter! You should have no trouble grafting that sorely needed Euro symbol.” –And he very well did!

Very close thematically and in style to the rest of our “whimbats” (the Absurdies, Bizarries, Illustries, Genteta and Whimsies series), the Ombres contain a number of peculiar silhouettes and illustrations of people that range from cute to scary, with everything in between. Ombres offers152 pictures in 3 files. These imaginary characters were produced with different techniques: quick pencil sketches, ink, watercolour, though once digitized and simplified to bring them into the font files there is little apparent difference. The silhouettes, rather than flat shadows are more dimensional in their look, because they have been digitized retaining the original brushwork or pencil strokes of their source drawings. Some of them remind of the venerable tradition of metal stock cuts from vintage type foundries. The digitized results are quite different, but the energetic nature of the subjects has been mantained. Their vectorial file format means you can use them at any size with no loss of quality. Every Ombres dingbat offers ready-made images for a variety of creative projects. They can be used as they come or easily customized in any graphics program. At small sizes they are ideal spot illustrations with a whimsical touch; at large sizes they can bring a whole page, a spread or even a big poster to live.

Hydrargyrum is the Latin form of a Greek word meaning "liquid silver" - mercury. The Hydrargyrum typefaces are designed with characteristics both of a metal and a liquid. The basic shapes of the letters are generally rigid and rectangular (particularly in style C), but the forms are enhanced by fluid curves and gently rounded corners. Hydrargyrum is not recommended for use at small sizes or in lengthy passages of text. It performs best in display-sized settings. Hydrargyrum consists of three styles, each in medium and semibold weights with matching obliques. The A style features solid, standard letterforms including the two-story a and g. Style B substitutes the a, g, M, and N (and related glyphs including numero and trademark symbols) for alternate shapes. The third subfamily takes the rectangular theme to an extreme, eliminating as many slanted strokes as possible from the letterforms. This makes some C-style letters ambiguous with one another, such as the U's and V's. As such, the C style is best used carefully even at larger sizes. The Hydrargyrum fonts are style linked within each style subfamily with, for example, Hydrargyrum A Medium as the regular style, Hydrargyrum A Medium Oblique as the italic, Hydrargyrum A SemiBold as the bold option, etc.

Phrygia is the Greek name of an ancient state in western-central Anatolia (modern Turkey), extending from the Eskişehir area east to (perhaps) Boğazköy and Alishar Hüyük within the Halys River bend. The Assyrians, a powerful state in northern Mesopotamia to the south, called the state Mushki; what its own people called it is unknown. We know from their inscriptions that the Phrygians spoke an Indo-European language. Judging from historical records supported by ceramic evidence, settlers migrating from the Balkans in Europe first settled here a hundred or more years following the destruction of the Hittite empire (ca. 1200 B.C.). Most of what is known about Phrygian archaeology and its language derives from excavations at the capital city Gordion, located about 60 miles southwest of the modern Turkish capital of Ankara (also a Phrygian site). Gustav and Alfred Körte first excavated Gordion in 1900. The excavators did not reach Phrygian levels, but they did reveal burials dated to the late eighth century B.C. with Phrygian ceramic, metal, and wooden artifacts. From 1950 to 1973, Rodney S. Young of the University of Pennsylvania led excavations at Gordion. Archaeological work at the site resumed in 1988 and continues to the present.

In order to give new imput to the art of typeface design in Italy, Nebiolo Company held, in March 1910, an artistic competition for a new alphabet conception, so the best-ranked design would be transformed into a real new typeface. 42 competitors participated and, although the first prize was not technically awarded, "Ancora" resulted as the best typeface, created by the designer-typographer Natale Varetti of Turin. Nonetheless, the new alphabet was transformed into a full-fledged metal typeface in 1924, renamed "Tanagra" in honor of the Greek city in the center of Boeotia. The new font, although not significantly detached from the classical Roman form, introduced decorative elements that allowed its use in both rational and artistic compositions. This font appears very clear and easy to read, with very high ascenders and some decorations that make it distinctly retrò. Finally, after almost 100 years, this peculiar character has been digitized taking it as a model the shapes of the 16 points size (other dimensions have significantly different contrasts and proportions). To adapt it to modern use, some glyphs have been modified, but all the originals are available as Stylistic Alternate OTF, as well as all the swashed variants while the missing ones were added.

Logik is a futuristic square sans serif typeface. Its personality is defined by squared-off corners that you would normally expect to be rounded, this sharpness gives the glyphs an eccentricity that the eye quickly adjusts to. Sharp, incised/stylised ink traps along with slightly tapered/curved horizontals and verticals add to the character of each letterform. These subtleties combine to give Logik a distinctively futuristic aura. These two extra bold fonts are classic slab serif wood type styles with one detail of difference. Columbian is an extra bold Clarendon wood type that was manufactured by many of the wood type manufacturers in the late 19th century. "Clarendons" feature bracketed or rounded serif joins whereas "Antique" was a class of typefaces that features squared off slab serifs. Some type designs have only minor differences from others. The Columbian design is essentially identical to Wm. Page & Co.'s "Antique no. 4", with the difference being the bracketed serifs. In researching material for the digitization of Columbian, we started with a 15 line font identified as "Columbian" shown in the Angelica Press wood type portfolio (printed in 1976). This font is in fact "Page Antique no. 4". Comparing Antique #4 to Columbian specimens from Hamilton and other manufacturers confirms the only real difference is the serif treatments. Therefore, both fonts are presented as a pair. Each font features a full Western & Central European character set.

Hexonu is a weird, awkward, monospaced font family. In place of true lower-case letters, it has a second set of capitals that, through the magic of the OpenType contextual alternatives (calt) feature, automatically alternates with the set on the upper-case keys. If one wants to use only one set of letters, the contextual alternatives must be turned off and character spacing adjusted. Hexonu is another effort to create a font with alternating sets of letters (see PoultySign, Lentzers, and Caltic for others). The base shape for forming the letters is a lopsided hexagon that resembles an old coffin. In four of the six family members, the alternating shape is a distorted hour-glass. In the other two, coffin shapes heads-up alternate with coffin shapes heads-down. The family was created as an experiment with the calt feature and not for any particular use. It does not work as text but its bizarreness makes it appropriate for some poster and signage applications.

MVB Dovetail is an editorially focused text serif designed by David Sudweeks. The working idea for the typeface came from a design school letter-making exercise: Take a pair of scissors and a few large sheets of paper, and start cutting. The resulting letters and the action itself of cutting them out of paper informed the type design process, producing strong, simple shapes and an open, inviting texture. Dovetail’s tone is crisp and straightforward. Its classic letterforms, set off with a touch of playfulness, give the design both a practical and spontaneous personality. Ribbonetter is an experimental font playing with the calt or contextual alternatives feature of OpenType. This feature alternates letters in ovals with letters in hourglass shapes to create a banner. The letters in the ovals will be determined by the start of the line, whether it starts by typing an upper-case or lower-case letter. Using layers, background color can be added (dot accent and ring characters) or the outline color can be changed (sterling and yen characters). The font may also be useful with the contextual alternatives turned off. Different amounts of character spacing may give interesting results. With default character spacing, ovals with will overlap. If you are typing numbers and want the start to be an oval, switch on OpenType style set 2. In at least one word processor (Pages 5 for Macintosh) the carriage return adds the shape assigned to the space character. If you encounter this, try adding a nonbreaking space (option-space on the Macintosh) before the carriage return.

Microbrew is a versatile retro display family with 14 individual styles, plus retro banners, ornaments, and symbols. It’s a nice mix between wood type poster style, and vintage letterpress. The more detailed styles work well at large sizes, and the cleaner styles add legibility at smaller sizes. Microbrew is an all caps display font, but the lowercase act as alternates. For super-easy alternates, just mix uppercase and lowercase letters. To add to the realism, Microbrew includes double-letter ligatures. Microbrew also includes a set of extremely intentional ornaments and symbols. Designed to give a vintage feel, the ornaments and symbols compliment Microbrew nicely to round off the family. Finally the time has come to publish our new ‘BlackHand’ font. It is a bold and upright handwritten font featuring 150 ligatures, which make for a credible handwritten look and feel. The ligatures will appear quasi random without the user having to search for the right alternate character in a list of glyphs. As you will notice, the font does well in both headers (it even has an ‘instant logo’ quality) and in plain text. The font finds it’s origin in handwritten notes which were done without paying attention to aesthetics. The regular characters and the ligatures were handpicked to form an organic and natural, very readable result.
