In order to give new imput to the art of typeface design in Italy, Nebiolo Company held, in March 1910, an artistic competition for a new alphabet conception, so the best-ranked design would be transformed into a real new typeface. 42 competitors participated and, although the first prize was not technically awarded, "Ancora" resulted as the best typeface, created by the designer-typographer Natale Varetti of Turin. Nonetheless, the new alphabet was transformed into a full-fledged metal typeface in 1924, renamed "Tanagra" in honor of the Greek city in the center of Boeotia. The new font, although not significantly detached from the classical Roman form, introduced decorative elements that allowed its use in both rational and artistic compositions. This font appears very clear and easy to read, with very high ascenders and some decorations that make it distinctly retrò. Finally, after almost 100 years, this peculiar character has been digitized taking it as a model the shapes of the 16 points size (other dimensions have significantly different contrasts and proportions). To adapt it to modern use, some glyphs have been modified, but all the originals are available as Stylistic Alternate OTF, as well as all the swashed variants while the missing ones were added.

Veteran designer Bo Berndal has created Cartesius, an oldstyle serif typeface with roots in the 16th and 17th centuries, France and Venice. Bo Berndal: "Rene Decartes, the great French philosopher, was invited to Sweden in the 17th century, when the country was at the height of its power. In the university city of Uppsala he used the Latin name form Cartesius. The typeface that carries his name is inspired by letterforms from the 1600s, but upper case letters are of pure Roman type". Cartesius holds up well even under less than perfect circumstances, and is suitable for magazine and book design. It comes with a full range of styles, including small caps. Mummbler is your tiny, crunchy and lovely serif font with tall ascenders and deep descenders. Romantic, perhaps - but definately worth your next print project!

The swooshy swirls of the uppercase paired with the simple lowercase creates a very useful title font. Romantic and girly but still perfectly legible.

MetroBots is a fun loving, non-traditional but very functional family of 6 fonts made of big city skies, the long tropical morning shadows of ancient ziggurats and entire pueblo villages, nestled into the steep cliff-sides of sage-topped mesas in south western deserts. Blanchard is a revival and elaborate extension of Muriel, a 1950 metal face made by Joan Trochut-Blanchard for the Fonderie Typographique Française, that was published simultaneously by the Spanish Gans foundry under the name Juventud. Blanchard is a script that embodies the post-war narrow decorative aesthetic that would become the instantly recognizable feature of that era’s design. Its high ascenders corners make it the tuxedo of fonts, with slight and casual angles gradually revealing a trustworthy confidante, and sharp corners signaling a most expressive ally. Font. A 1940s sheet music edition of an early 1900s song entitled "You Taught Me How to Love You, Now Teach Me to Forget" was set in a popular metal type slab serif face. It is presented digitally as Elite Resort JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

In a vintage photograph, promotional signage outside an old theater for the 1929 early sound film “The Doctor’s Secret” had lettering in a wide, bold Art Nouveau slab serif design. This was the model for Talking Picture JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Petras Script, the first digital script font created by the calligrapher Petra Beiße, has, for many years, met with worldwide success. Now the font is complemented with an alternate character set, which gives designers more flexibility and adds a personal touch to the font. Petra Beiße has resided for a long time in Wiesbaden, Germany, where she is working as a renowned calligrapher. It is rare that any of her scripts are transferred into digital format and sold worldwide as fonts. Because Petras Script became such a huge success, she decided to release Casanova Script Pro.

From the standpoint of calligraphy, a font family of capitals and uncials makes perfect sense. The Roman square capitals, the quadrata, are matched by round capitals of older Greek origin; the word "uncus" means hook-shaped like a beak or talon. Interrelated and often interchangeable, these capital letters served as book hands for both the Latin West and the Greek-speaking East before they evolved into minuscule alphabets. The Testament family is based on the few formal capital manuscripts of the Bible, Virgil and Homer that have survived from the ancient world. Throughout the Middle Ages both uncials and square capitals were used, often together, for headings and initial characters. By their nature the Roman capitals are the voice of Caesar and hold the place of authority, while the uncials speak for the Church in a balanced relationship. In ancient times church and state were not as separate as they are now, and the alphabets were not as different as typographic tradition has made them. In this calligraphic rendering it is clear that they are of the same substance and can be written in the same style, conveying even to the modern eye the eternal and classical quality of epic and scripture.
