In drawing the Avenir® typeface, Adrian Frutiger looked to both the past and the future for inspiration. His goal was to reinterpret the geometric sans serif designs of the early part of the 20th century in a typeface that would portend aesthetics of the 21st century. He succeeded handsomely. In doing so, Frutiger added a bit of organic humanism to the design, freeing Avenir from the rigid geometric overtones of the earlier designs. Avenir is employed on signage at Dallas Fort Worth and Hong Kong international airports. The city of Amsterdam adopted Avenir as its corporate typeface in 2003. The original Avenir family is made up of designs with gradual weight changes in order to satisfy the needs of specific text applications. While the book and light weights have similar stroke widths, the book weight is well suited for body text, whereas the light was designed for captions and subhead text. The Englishman William Caslon (1672-1766) first cut his typeface Caslon in 1725. His major influences were the Dutch designers Christoffel van Dijcks and Dirck Voskens. The Caslon font was long known as the script of kings, although on the other side of the political spectrum, the Americans used it as well for their Declaration of Independence. The characteristics of the earlier Renaissance typefaces are only barely detectable. The serifs are finer and the axis of the curvature is almost or completely vertical. The overall impression which Caslon makes is serious, elegant and linear. Next to Baskerville, Caslon is known as the embodiment of the English Baroque-Antiqua and has gone through numerous new interpretations, meaning that every Caslon is slightly different. Caslon Classico appeared in 1993 and was designed by Franco Luin, the designer of various interpretations of classic typefaces. Luin kept his design true to the original and Caslon Classico consists of two cuts with corresponding italic and small caps characters.

In the era of digital types, the round handmade cursive continues to intrigue many type designers, probably by their beautiful and graceful calligraphic origins. However, what is certainly true, is that all good traditional pen-formed script may be suitable for a wide range of fine graphic works. The Predy typeface is based on the famous style of the 19th Century: The English handwriting made by pen. It is a connected cursive in the tradition of the “ronde”. This typeface is constructed upon their vigorous ascenders with loops, two times the lengths of the descenders with an extremely short x-high. To start with one personal fact: I really like to listen Rahsaan Roland Kirk. He was a multi-instrumentalist, real grandmaster and unique jazz virtuoso. The way he improvised and walked through variety of different music influences are admiring. One of things he liked is to modify instruments, so he modified soprano saxophone and got an instrument called manzello. When I was looking for good name for this typeface, it came on my mind that Manzello could be the perfect one. It has the symbolic background from the instrument and theoretically in my head, it's imagined as typeface that rely on stable classic examples, but graphically designed and modified to match modern standards. Manzello contains a dose of characteristics of display typefaces with terminals that aren't perfectly rounded, high contrast between stems and good balanced Italics with elements of fine calligraphy. It's a small font family, something what I was always looking for to have as first text solution in my web and graphic projects.

CT Ausetan is a typeface designed for perfect reading in continuous text. With humanist proportions and calligraphic details but actual, both in appearance and in function. Its asymmetric serifs and slightly curved stems recall the warmth, dynamism and character of the first humanist typefaces built according to the logic of the flat pen. Balcony is a decorative display typeface inspired by the patterns of metal safety grills. Its highly geometric features may be used to identify it as Art Deco. It is a monospaced type family with all characters confined in a square frame. The main idea of Balcony is to create a grill-like pattern when letterforms are placed together. This creates an illusionary experience for the reader. The best way to use this typeface is without leading, as shown in the visuals. Balcony also comes with two stylistic sets. Amarone is a spiky calligraphic display typeface with some old fashioned flavour. It was designed by Carl Crossgrove, and includes an extensive set of swash caps which allow for extra drama where needed. Crossgrove wrote each of Amarone's letters by hand using pen and rough paper, and has retained some of this visual texture in the final digital design. The typeface works well at small sizes, but when used at larger sizes this texture comes to the fore. Amarone's elegant, formal character can be modified with its swash caps, which allow the typeface to move from prim and ordered to wildly expressive. Amarone lends itself well to packaging, posters and editorial usage – or in any environment where designers need to evoke times gone by.
