A font from the tube: an individual handwriting with a slightly wet character. In this case, the “pen” was a tube of black paint. It’s easy to see that you can’t really write “beautifully” with it. Nevertheless, the “Tube Script” is a beautiful, personal handwriting whose clumsy origins are not at all obvious in small font sizes. But if it’s big enough, then all the peculiarities of the paint container misused as a writing implement become apparent. Sometimes the line is very thin and delicate, sometimes it’s just a thick blob meant to represent a letter, depending on how hard the tube was squeezed. A few spills are inevitable. These coincidences of painterly writing are what make this font so appealing. This creates organic forms, random effects, breaks, streaks, where the writer normally determines the form. As such, this font is a great match for anything organic, picturesque, handmade, personal, or even random, unpredictable, or just plain natural. Hundreds of ligatures make the letters appear in a different form each time depending on it’s combination. And more than a hundred alternate characters can be selected using the corresponding OpenType features, thus enabling even more variety in the typeface. This creates the typically restless, extremely varied impression of a really individual script – almost as if it were really handwritten.

Our resident mad scientist John “Mr. Fontastic” Roshell has developed a single contraption that can handle any design emergency, from crimelords to supervillain team-ups to alien invasions. Whatchamacallit is a friendly and readable sans-serif, inspired by some of our all-time favorites -- Gill Sans, Futura, Venus and Antique Olive. But, like its machinery-contraption namesakes Doohickey and Framistat, Whatchamacallit has a lively personality -- the strokes are a little wavy, the ends a bit bulbous, and the circles are like little loaves of bread, rising in the Whatchamacallit's oven... delicious!

In March 2010, Émile Fradin, a modest peasant farmer from central France, died at the age of 103. To his grave he took the secret behind one of the most controversial archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. A discovery which put into question the very origins of the written word and the paternity of European culture. It was the uncovering of peculiar artefacts would come to be known as the Glozel runes. The discovery of the Glozel runes On the first day of March 1924, a not yet 18-year-old Fradin was ploughing his family’s field in the hamlet of Glozel, when his cow stumbled into a hole. When he and his grandfather, Claude, looked closer, they discovered a mass of broken stone, under which lay an underground chamber. Within, they discovered pottery fragments, carved bones, and a peculiar clay tablet covered in bizarre characters that neither of the two could decipher. The family requested a subsidy for excavation works to be carried out, but were refused by the regional authority. With that disappointment, it seemed as though the discovery would fade into obscurity. However, the following year, news of Fradin’s unusual clay tablet reached the ears of the physician and amateur archeologist, Antonin Morlet. By the end of May 1925, Morlet began the first of his excavations.4 Within the first two years alone, he had amassed some 3,000 finds.

Looking back on my production to date, neither so little nor so large, it does not come as a surprise to find myself now introducing Lady René. A brief review of my career would read as follows: graphic designer graduated from Buenos Aires University, a 10-year professorship in Typography in the same institution, an illustrator in the making. For almost 15 years now my work has focused on the design of editorial pieces, predominantly books and CD sleeves. Typography proper has always been central to my research projects. All my obsessions eventually embodied as much the search for a perfect, spotless text as for a daring and provoking one. In my view, "how-to-say-something" ranks highest amongst a graphic designer’s responsibilities. It was in this vein that I called in the written word to illustrate, to draw, to narrate. Why not reverse the saying and proclaim that “a word is worth a thousand images”? If so, one single word could trigger endless meanings, associations, ideas, and memories in every reader’s mind. Language, we know, has a strong power and is a living expression of a culture. In my illustrations, letters and drawings reunite in one synergy said and unsaid, the finiteness of the message and the freedom of the free reading. And this is how and when, Lady René, my first born type font sees the light of day conceived out of a love of illustration and a reverence for the written word, recalling the whimsicality of the handmade drawing and reflecting its sensitive, warmth and spontaneity. Enabled by the characteristics of Open Type and the hard, outstanding work of designer Ale Paul, Lady René succeeds in composing texts in a simple, organic way by means of its contextual and stylistic alternates, swash characters, ligatures and connecting words. A bundle of decorative miscellanea completes the set of signs, enabling the user considerable freedom to create new typographic landscapes. I have always loved slab serif type and have created Eponymous to fulfil a yearning for a versatile, stylish and contemporary slab face. A key design characteristic is the implementation of scalloped serifs which, to me, imbues the typeface with a distinctive personality. Make use of the Open Type features that are part of Eponymous. For a start, you can implement some stylistic alternates, so, if the main characters don’t quite suit your concept, try activating Stylistic Set 1. There’s also a full set of small caps included. Tokoloshe is a name in African mythology for a mischievous leprechaun-like figure that loves practical jokes and tricking people. There are many books of such African stories, for example Tales of the Tokoloshe by Pieter Scholtz. The letter shapes that I used in the Tokoloshe font have inspiration from two sources: -- the spiky character of the font was derived from the wonderfully imaginative, wooden carvings of the Makonde people of beings called "shetani". The word "tokoloshe" is used by other tribes, but from his behaviour, he is certainly a type of shetani. -- some of the letter shapes were informed by Art Deco styles of fonts, for example: Kunjani, Black Tie SF, Selznick Normal, Zaire SF, Binner Gothic and ITC Anna. But the Tokoloshe font, like its namesake, is much more freespirited. Use this font whenever you want to suggest the rich artistic, cultural and spiritual heritage of Africa. The font is fully professional in terms of its character set. It contains over 235 characters - (upper and lower case characters, punctuation, numerals, symbols and accented characters are present). Julia Child once said: the secret to great french cooking is butter, butter, butter. Thus, we present to you Manteiga - butter in Portuguese! - a typeface for heart-melting, word-spreading goodness. The idea we had was to play with brush lettering - a style we love - and go as far as we can with the shapes of the letters while finding balance between positive and negative space. We wanted biiiig personality. And small inconsistencies - the ones that add texture and life to lettering. We left extensive OpenType features and technical stuff aside for a moment, adding later only what we thought was necessary, like different shapes for the Q, a and g - for example. All caps setting was something we wanted from the beginning. In text case, the x-height is rather short for a brush script, and this lends a quirky voice. Spacing is ultra tiiiiight so don’t go too small, but make it as big as you want! Ah! And there are some fun dingbats thrown in for good measure.

Like a lovechild of American Typewriter and Cooper Black, typewritten in melted chocolate, this is Margot. A bold single weight display typeface in roman and italic styles, Margot is boisterous but cuddly; warm but impactful. “Fanfare is such a fun typeface,” says Toshi Omagari, who revived the design for The Wolpe Collection. “It was my happiest discovery when I was digging through the Monotype archive.
