From the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, by way of Toronto, comes Martie's handwriting. Martie Byrd is a school teacher in Roanoke, Virginia, and a friend of Canada Type's Rebecca Alaccari. After years of admiring the cheer and clarity of Martie's handwriting, we asked her to write out full alphabets for some cool font treatment. The intent was to do three different versions of her writing in two different pens, then use the auto-magic of OpenType to determine letter sequences and rotate character sets on the fly when the fonts are in use. A successful endeavor it was. Fer is a sans-serif font for body text, not lacking in its own distinctive voice. The aftertaste of reading the text set in Fer is like reading the letters on old rusty plates somewhere in Southern Europe, hence the name (Fer means iron in French). Being a modern system that includes a variable font with weight and optical size axes, Fer combines the features of geometriс sans serifs and old sans serifs with closed apertures. Originally designed in 1928, Plak is something of a lost gem in the type world. Despite being drawn by Futura creator Paul Renner, it never achieved the same popularity and spent decades lacking a much-needed digital revival. Monotype designers Linda Hintz and Toshi Omagari have taken its existing three weights and, after extensive research into the original wood type, extended them into the vast Neue Plak family. The visual tension in Quell stems from conflict between two tendencies: The perfectly round shapes are geometrically constructed, yet the contrast of stroke widths and oblique line terminations suggest calligraphic roots.
