Rufina was as tall and thin as a reed. Elegant but with that distance that well-defined forms seem to impose. Her voice, however, was sweeter, closer, and when she spoke her name, like a slow whisper, one felt like what she had come to say could be read in her image. Rufina's story can only be told through a detour because her origin does not coincide with her birth. Rufina was born on a Sunday afternoon while her father was drawing black letters on a white background, and her mother was trying to join those same letters to form words that could tell a story. But her origin goes much further back, and that is why she is pierced by a story that precedes her, even though it is not her own. Maybe her origin can be traced back to that autumn night in which that tall man with that distant demeanor ran into that woman with that sweet smile and elegant aspect. He looked at her in such a way that he was trapped by that gaze, even though they found no words to say to each other, and they stayed in silence. Somehow, some words leaked into that gaze because since that moment they were never apart again. Later, after they started talking, projects started coming up and then coexistence and arguments, routines and mismatches. But in that chaos of crossed words in their life together, something was stable through the silence of the gazes. In those gazes, the silent words sustained that indescribable love that they didn't even try to understand. And in one of those silences, Rufina appeared, when that man told that woman that he needed a text to try out his new font, and she saw him look at her with that same fascination of the first time, and she started to write something with those forms that he was giving her as a gift. Rufina was as tall and thin as a reed, wrote her mother when Rufina was born.

Congress from Adrian Williams was shown for the first time at the Association Typographique International Congress, which proved to be so popular in 1980 at Kiel; designed to present a style equally appealling in European languages. Another variation on the Renaissance-Baroque Roman face, it extends the selection of text type faces. In comparison with Jannon, the contrast within the letters has been enhanced. The dynamic elements of the Renaissance Roman face have been strengthened in a way which is illustrated best in the letters "a", "b" and "s". These letters contain, in condensed form, the principle of this type face - in round shapes the dark stroke invariably has a round finial at one end and a sharp one at the other. Another typical feature is the lower-case "g"; the upper part of this letter consists of two geometrically exact circles, the inner of which, a negative one, is immersed down on the right, upright to the direction of the lower loop and the upright knob. The vertical strokes slightly splay out upwards. Some details of the upper-case letters may seem to be too daring, but they are less apparent in the text sizes. It has to be admitted that typographers tend to draw letters in exaggerated sizes, as a result of which they stick to details. Serapion Italic are italics inspired partly by the Renaissance Cancelleresca. This is obvious from the drop-shaped finials of its lower-case descenders. The type face is suitable for illustrated books, art posters and short texts. It has a rather ugly name - after St. Serapion.

Dollar Tree Stores imports a number of items from China, and many times these are limited-run products only available until the existing supplies run out. One such item was a sans serif stencil lettering guide with rounded ends that takes on the look of 1980s-influenced techno lettering. This is now available as Import Stencil JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Great type font inspirations can come from any time period and any location in the world. A Febuary, 1932 issue of an Estonian woman’s magazine called “Eesti Naine” had its name hand lettered using a round nib lettering pen. This extra-wide Art Deco design is now available as Round Nib Deco JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

There was a time in this country when many young people studied a trade via a correspondence course through the mail. While this method still exists, it's now more common to find students taking online classes. From an early-1960s course in sign painting comes Sign Merchant JNL, a classic brush stroke type design popularized on show cards and posters.

The 1907 novelty song "Since Arrah Wanna Married Barney Carney" (about an Irishman taking an Indian maiden as his bride) had its title hand-lettered in a sans serif style that reflected both the Art Nouveau flavor of the time and a hint of what was to come during the Art Deco movement. This is now Song Stylist JNL and it's oblique counterpart.

Monroe was designed in 2010, but in 2013 the font’s designer stopped selling it. Eight years after its initial release, Monroe returns in a new and upgraded version—with improved drawing and spacing—which includes more weights as well as alternate glyphs. Each font style has 819 glyphs and the whole set contains 394 characters which support 207 Latin-based languages. Monroe also includes 5 stylistic sets that offer a wide range of signs, swashes and discretionary ligatures, all specially made to add aesthetic value to your designs. The family comes in 5 weights: Thin, Ultra Light, Light, Regular and Bold. Monroe was designed by Daniel Hernández with the collaboration of Alfonso García.

The light and normal weights and the dominant x-height with its high ascenders make for easy reading of long copy. The heavy and x-light weights are great for elegant headlines. Supra is an OpenType family for professional typography with an extended character set of over 700 glyphs. It supports more than 40 Central- and Eastern-European as well as many Western languages. Ligatures, different figures, fractions, currency symbols and smallcaps can be found in all cuts.

Walter Foster art books strike again, this time with a bouncy script based on the work of Al Mack, from his Lettering: Brush & Pen in the Single Stroke. Light and lively, this typeface proves that it don't mean a thing if you ain't... The Opentype version of this font supports Unicode 1250 (Central European) languages, as well as Unicode 1252 (Latin) languages.

Lichtspiele Reklame is the ultra condensed version of Lichtspiele inspired by the 1920s — the golden age of cinema — where neon lights and marquee letters decorated cinema facades. Lichtspiele Reklame is crafted for large narrow formats and contains the display font and two italics (italic & contra-italic), like in these 20s, a time where movie announcements were shown on huge so called Litfaßsäulen.

Essay is an elegant serif typeface intended for setting books, with many stylistic alternates and other typographic goodies, designed by Stefan Ellmer. It is a highly legible text face with a natural flow of reading. This is enhanced by a slight slant of the roman, the combination of open and closed apertures and the amalgamation of organic strokes and counters with a static, fully straight baseline. Essay Text Regular looks back to the spirit of the french Renaissance, when the roman typographic letterforms came to full emancipation. Departing from that historical reference, Essay Text gets rid of all sentimental antiquity and becomes a contemporary interpretation of the “archetypes” of that period. Essay Text Italic refers to that more vaguely, resulting in a formalised look with fairly upright and open shapes and little cursiveness. As in the Renaissance, before the mating of roman and italic, Essay Text Italic works as a separate text face and a perfect secondary type. The name Essay derives from the literary meaning of the word, attempt or trial. Therefore, the typeface Essay can be seen as an attempt to express an opinion about reading, the omnipresence of history, the importance of calligraphy and the importance to deviate from that calligraphic source; as well as an attempt to crystallise lettershapes in balance between convention and the designer’s personal idiom.

Arquitecta. The humanist typography as a rational project. Since the experimentation from the Bauhaus through modern sans history we looked for a new mix to construct a rational geometric typeface with humanist proportions suitable for text layout and continuous reading. Inspired by American & European hand lettering from the first half of the past century, Arquitecta finds his own space as a great alternative for paragraphs in front of classics like Futura, Kabel or Avant Garde. The family contains 8 upright romans and 8 italics with the following features: - European accents, Old Style Numbers, Numerators & Fractions. - Ink traps to avoid press impressing spots & hinting optimized. - Small X-height with accentuated ascenders y descenders. Upgrade Mar 2023: Contours were corrected and the set was extended to the current Latinotype.

Narcissus Open is a heavy typeface designed by Walter Tiemann in 1921 for the Klingspor Foundry in Germany. It is a shaded wide roman using a very modest amount of white highlighting. Serifs are extremely delicate, almost ornamental. This elegant old typeface gives a feeling of importance and authority and is highly effective when used in large display sizes. Narcissus Solid lacks all highlighting and becomes more useful in smaller sizes. Narcissus Open and Solid are also available in the OpenType Std format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version. Advanced features currently work in Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress 7. Check for OpenType advanced feature support in other applications as it gradually becomes available with upgrades.
