If you like thematic fonts, this is for you. It appeared in an old lettering book (from the 1930s, if memory serves) and later came out as a film font for photolettering machines. We cleaned it up and drew the missing characters, and here it is. Enjoy.

To design the font Bobbin Cyrillic I was inspired by the You And Me Monthly published by National Magazines Publisher RSW Prasa that appeared from Mai 1960 till December 1973 in Poland. In the Bobbin Cyrillic family, every variety contains 3 alternative characters with automatic replacement.

Crude Stencil JNL is a rough auto-tracing of a vintage lettering stencil from the 1980s, with additional characters added in post-production. At small type sizes, the lettering takes on a "grunge" effect, but larger scale text will reveal more of a jagged "cut paper" look.

Trailerpark numbers 0-9 were rather old fashioned 1950's cut aluminum numbers, you've seen digitized nowhere else but here! Part of Market LTD, a collection of limited faces, mostly alpha-numeric and some just plain numeric, used primarily in retail and display situations and titling.

La Carte Pen is a paper textured version of the popular La Carte font. Inspired by a series of handwritten menus produced in 1980, La Carte is a stylish but easy-to-read script that sets as well in body copy as it does in headlines.

In the 1960 edition of Sam Welo’s “Studio Handbook – Letter and Design for Artists and Advertisers” is a stylized, condensed slab serif alphabet he referred to as “Poster Slab”. This has been digitally redrawn as Poster Moderne JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

This is our name for Antique Tuscan, of which there were many variations. This font came from a large lot purchased around 1970 from an east coast newspaper shop. Subsequently, we acquired several more versions of the face, but this one had lowercase so we used it.

Loosely inspired by the designs of Rudolf Koch and his Koch Antiqua, Sin Original Dark by Mondrey Sin is a curious monoline display face with small x-heights, and large caps. The design almost looks 1920s vintage. Interesting for book Jackets, editorial, and as drop caps.

Designed by Peter Behrens, well known graphic artist and architect in Germany in the late 19th and early 20th century. This "Antiqua" was done for Rudhard's Typefoundry in Offenbach A. M. around 1902, and has been used in modern times for museum retrospectives of the designer's work.

Inside the pages of the August, 1930 issue of “The New Movie Magazine” is an ad for Warner Brothers-First National Pictures – hand lettered in a bold Art Deco sans. This was the basis for Movie Production JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Belgravia is an Art Nouveau period design based on hand lettering from the 1890s. Like our popular Pantagruel font it has a lot of the elements which would influence later Psychedelic poster lettering in the 1960s. Very nice looking with a good weight for title designs.

Favorite Stencil JNL is inspired by and modeled after the classic hot metal typeface "Ludlow Stencil"; a design that enjoyed popularity around the 1950s and is not to be confused with Ludlow's similarly-named "Stencil" which was released in 1937. Available in both regular and oblique versions.

Inspired by the old Stephenson Blake Caps only font Algerian from 1908, this version, named Algerian Mesa, has been freshened up with a new matching lowercase. The original Algerian, on page 142 of the 1908 Stephenson Blake specimen book, was a small caps to a more decorative lining caps and the plain black version, without the shadow line, was named Gloria. Also on page 142 of the 1908 Stephenson Blake specimen book is a shaded Latin font that gave me the idea for the Alt version of Algerian Mesa. The Alt version works well at smaller point sizes combined with the regular Algerian Mesa font on the same page. New for 2016 were Opentype features including original alternates, oldstyle numerals and case sensitive forms, also new is a fully usable Alt version. New for 2022 are the higher x-height, 90% small caps, 80% small caps and all new italic versions. Also new for 2022 are straight sided accent marks replacing the flared or curved accents. While Algerian Mesa includes some alternates our related Tavern font will still remain the version with more alternates and more weights.

The inspiration source for Semicirculus Monogram is a stylish sans serif letterset from a vintage embroidery publication which combines to create a semi-circular form monogram. Originally intended to adorn handkerchiefs, it has so many other possibilities. Ornaments from numerous antique specimen books were combined with the letter set to accent and complete its form. This is one of many monogram designs for the early 1900s which fall into a two letter format that is either adorned or interwoven with ornamentation. Rufus Script is a connected script font inspired by Palmer method of business writing (classic commercial lettering of the 1900-1915). Tautier is a display font based on the specimen of Enge Mediaeval-Antigua, published in 1900 from the Bauer Type Foundry. It is intentionally redrawn to keep its overall narrow proportions. Based on the existing basic alphabets, Tautier is redrawn to appear more classical and friendly, as you can notice in the rounded corners around the beaks, as well as the lachrymal terminals in lowercases. Tautier is a display typeface suitable for large applications, for example, headlines for editorial design, branding, webpages, and environmental design. It currently comes as a single-styled typeface disposed to extend with an italic version.

The inspiration source for Fantasie Monogram is another hand-drawn design from a vintage embroidery publication which relies on rigid geometric letterforms on a dynamic slant stepping downwards. This monogram, which evokes visions of it embossed or printed on antique cookie tins, was originally intended to adorn handkerchiefs, but the possibilities of its use are up to your imagination. Print Shop Parts JNL has a nostalgic assortment of blank sign panels, a pointing hand, decorative embellishments and even an assortment of "Made in U.S.A.", "Made in America" and "Made in United States" emblems located on the 1-9 keys. All are from vintage type catalogs and sign painting instruction books from the early 1900s. When scaled up, the blank sign panels can be used for small signs or price tags as originally made in years past. During the early part of the 20th Century, it was common to create show cards in attention-getting shapes matched with beautiful hand lettering.

The font Eckmann is named after its designer, Otto Eckmann, and appeared with the Klingspor font foundry in 1900. The influence of the Jugendstil is clear to see in the flowing floral contours of the letters. This font was made for larger point sizes, like on posters, and while relatively legible, it is not meant for smaller print. The font was often used in book titles and advertisements of the 19th century and today Eckmann is often used to suggest a feeling of nostalgia and is often found on the Jugendstil facades in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The hand lettered credits from the 1950 Humphrey Bogart film “In a Lonely Place” inspired the digital version called Screenwriter JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. The font was named after the profession of the main character (Dixon Steele) who was a Hollywood screenwriter.

In the 1904 book “Letters & Lettering” by Frank C. Brown is a page of Roman style upper case letters entitled “Modern American Capitals – after Will Brady”. The slab serif, Art-Nouveau-influenced alphabet inspired a digital version. Roman Nouveau JNL, is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Alonquin is a typographical tribute to Dorothy Parker and the New Yorker crowd who haunted the Alonquin hotel in its 1920s heyday, sharing scintillating one-liners over sparkling cocktails. Deco and decadent, it aims to recapture the spirit of the age (mostly gin from what I can make out!)

Sprint is a forward-leaning display face that was created by the noted Italian type designer Aldo Novarese. The font is a perfect match for 1970s era racecars, or 21st Century e-commerce start-ups. Get with the speed today, and try out Sprint in a headline or two.

Named for a Manhattan neighborhood, Morningside Heights JNL is based on lettering found on a 1920s-era piece of sheet music. Part of the charm of hand lettering from the Art Nouveau era is found in the non-standard line thicknesses, experimental character shapes and varying character widths.

Justus Erich Walbaum was a German punchcutter who worked in Weimar around 1800. He produced both serif and blackletter typefaces. Walbaum Fraktur" is based on his famous blackletter-style type (called Fraktur in German). Walbaum Fraktur is an excellent font for anything old-fashioned, Northern European, or typographically quirky."

In the 1970s, Face Photosetting in London was known as the preeminent typesetting house in London. Steve worked in the studio in Newman Street and Hanway Place. El Paso Pro is a family of typefaces based on a unique single font design from the Face Collection, called El Paso.

PiS Penny Serenade is an elegant all caps high-contrast sans with some serif-y elements in the caps, inspired by the handwritten titles of the 1941 melodrama movie of the same name. Be sure to use the art deco style alternate glyph set for more 1920s vintageness!

Showpiece JNL was redrawn from the hand lettering for the name and address of a music publisher found on some 1930s-era sheet music. The lettering style has features influenced a bit by both the end of the Art Nouveau period and the beginning of the Art Deco movement.

Retail Stencil JNL was modeled from a set of 2 inch lettering stencils manufactured during the 1980s. Although similar in design to Excess Baggage JNL, there are a number of character differences as to where the "breaks" (or division of the stencil parts of the character) are located.
