Once I set on the concept for this ‘Origami’ inspired font, I used an imaginary strip of folded paper as the basis for each character, the folded effect being realized fully by incorporating an incised line. Of course the folded paper aspect is just a two dimensional illusion but subconsciously, will automatically be interpreted three dimensionally. There are numerous options for creating alternative characters following this logic, as the centuries-old Origami tradition itself illustrates quite clearly, but I wanted to maintain an ordered sense of style and balance throughout the full character set, so avoided any unnecessary flourishes, staying true to the Japanese ethos and spirit.

Eckhardt Bold JNL continues a series of sign painter-inspired type designs and is named in honor of the late Al Eckhardt, a talented sign man who was a good friend of Jeff Levine for about 18 years until his passing. The font is available in both regular and oblique versions and was inspired by an example found in the 1928 edition of E.C. Mattthews' "How to Paint Signs and Sho' Cards". The origins of Bookman Old Style lie in the typeface called Oldstyle Antique, designed by A C Phemister circa 1858 for the Miller and Richard foundry in Edinburgh, Scotland. Many American foundries made versions of this type which eventually became known as Bookman. Monotype Bookman Old Style roman is based on earlier Lanston Monotype and ATF models. The italic has been re drawn following the style of the Oldstyle Antique italics of Miller and Richard. Although called “Old Style,” the near vertical stress of the face puts it into the transitional category. The Bookman Old Style font family is a legible and robust text face.

Colin is a fresh, somewhat futuristic geometric sans serif type with a large x-height that, to me, communicates both seriousness and cheerfulness. It supports 70 languages incl. monotonic Greek and comes in 7 weights with a small number of alternate glyphs (ss01) for more flexibility. It features fractions, old style and tabular figures. Colin works great in titles, displays and short paragraphs. And where does it come from? To be honest, the reason for this font is a selfish one. I wanted a typeface where my initials (n and c) look identical, just rotated by 90 degrees. That didn’t completely work but, hey, it’s pretty close.

The concept is “Geo-Soft”: characters are constructed from arcs of circle connected by orthogonal straight lines, with few diagonals and nary a sharp corner. A happy, and delicate family, available in 5 weights. Being very legible in small sizes, it pays tribute to French designer Roger Excoffon, particularly to his Antique Olive type. Antique Olive combines two features which inspired the design of Quimera: a large x-height with open counters which ensures legibility at tiny body sizes; and letterforms with a horizontal stress which contradicts the logics of calligraphic tradition (thick verticals, thin horizontals). Quimera has a typical sanserif stroke modulation, but letters have a very thin, capricious serif, which helps to keep the texline's continuity. This 'genetic' contradiction is the reason for its name: Khimera, as it would be a 'sanserif avec'!
