Ember is an informal script with a judicious sprinkling of ligatures that give it a flowing freehand liveliness. Neither overly formal and stuffy nor cheap and cheerful, Ember is elegant yet friendly, sophisticated yet approachable, fun and frivolous but stylish and well bred. Ligatures are set to be on automatically, and the stylistic alternates and optional final forms for some of the characters can be toggled on and off using the OpenType panel in design applications with advanced OpenType support. It was a twisted, bubbly beauty – quite squishable and huggable. The working file was called Blubber. “At that time it was a basic construction of strokes. I created the ‘A’ first, purely as a shape to play with, not as type. I flipped it for ‘V’, and copied that for a ‘W’. I flipped the ‘W’ for an ‘M’... I thought, ‘This looks a bit wacky, but I like it,’ and just carried on. The most tricky characters were the ‘B’ ‘P’ and ‘R’. It all started with a simple idea back in 1998: do a digital version of a "lost" 70's typeface, and make up the missing letters that were not present in the only available example Jeff Levine had to work with. Jeff wasn't yet doing his own digital font creation, so he hooked up with Brad Nelson who owns a small foundry called Brain Eaters Fonts. Together, they collaborated on "Action Is"- a freeware font named after the source of the type example. This was a title page for a commemorative photo album of images from the 60's TV music show "Where the Action Is", formerly hosted by Jeff's employer at the time, singer-writer-producer Steve Alaimo. The free font took off like a rocket, being released just at the peak of the 60’s/70’s retro craze in the late 1990’s, and it was EVERYWHERE! It showed up on TV shows, packaging and web design -- and was even spotted on signage used on the side of a major amusement resort’s retro-themed hotel. From that point on, Jeff kept getting requests for a version with a lower case. Although they shared the copyright in the freeware version, Brad Nelson gave Jeff his blessing to re-work and take Action Is into the realm of commercial type. Newly improved and re-released as Groovy Happening JNL, it became one of Jeff's better selling type designs. A simplified, yet similar font was issued called Groovy Summer JNL. Now, after about a decade, Jeff had decided to clean up the 3-D (drop shadow) version that was originally freeware with many minute design flaws and re-release it commercially. Schumann Pro is the very first issue of a long lost early 1960s typeface project done by Heinz Schumann while he was at the University of Graphics and Book Design in Leipzig, where he studied under German type design giants Albert Kapr and Herbert Thannhaeuser. Guanabara is the third release of Plau Type Foundry. It started from the need of a wayfinding typeface that had personality enough to be the brand typeface for a city. The city of Rio de Janeiro, with its never-ending curves and all year long summer weather provided the constraints and requirements of this typeface. From there, it evolved to be a workhorse, with 8 weights from Thin to Black and matching true italics. It just had to have the features that all us designers have grown to love, such as alternate letters (a, g and r for the romans), tabular and proportional figures in lining and oldstyle set-ups as well as small caps, fractions and all that jazz (I mean, samba). And it needed to be recognizable and distinct. For that, design features like tapered R legs, capitals with classic proportions and calligraphic finishes on the terminals proved crucial. And last, but not least, like Rio, it had to welcome many cultures. We came to think of it as the “Typeface from Ipanema”, with a classic, timeless look, swinging elegance and joyful attitude.

Some typefaces are more deserving of the reference "original typeface design" than are others. Such a typeface is Steve's Safefont GD. It is indeed safe to say that this design has caused some controversy. However, the management of Galapagos Design Group believes that the message of the typeface, even before its characters are used to form words in print, is important enough-and the design itself compelling enough-to warrant the risk of any unintended offense it might cause. Safefont GD is made up of condoms, in various shapes and sizes. The design originated as a lampoon of contemporary-punk- and -garagefont- designs of the nineties. It soon evolved into the quintessence of socially conscious design. Steve suggests this typeface could be "useful as a public service font aimed at important health and social issues." In addition, Safefont GD lends itself to a wide range of fun uses.

Galix is a technical sans designed to look futuristic without any of the retro appearance often found in this genre. It has a squarish, slightly condensed anatomy, and is characterized by thin joints and deep ink traps that add a sparkle to the otherwise monoline typeface. In the italic styles, these cuts are accentuated even more which creates a feeling of speed in the letterforms. Galix is optimized for display typography (the ascender height is the same as the cap height, and the spacing is somewhat tight) but the middle weights are very readable at smaller sizes, where I'd recommend adding a little tracking. OpenType features include ft and tt ligatures, stylistic sets/alternates, automatic fractions, tabular, superscript and subscript figures, case sensitive forms. Perfect for websites, apps, infographics, magazines and logotypes, Galix is technical but with a warmth and personality that is often missing from this genre.

Éric de Berranger likes to multitask, and often works on two typeface families at once. Such was the case with Mosquito, a jaunty sans that was developed at the same time he was creating the more traditional Maxime. Mosquito represented a sort of recreation," says de Berranger. "When I grew tired of working on one design I could work on the other and then come back to the first, full of courage and desire!" Mosquito is built from simple, straightforward shapes, but its distinctive stroke terminals and slight oblique weight stress distinguish the design from more conventional sans serif faces. The relatively large x-height and open counters add to the legibility of the design. Fifteen hundred years from now, a man will be selected to go back in time to prevent a catastrophic event which turned his world into a dystopia. Sent back in time, he was enveloped in empyrean fire, the strands of energy that make up time itself. Crash-landing near Astro City in late 1985, he learned how to master and channel the empyrean forces that had suffused his body -- finally learning to control his powers in time to prevent the destruction of the Space Shuttle Challenger, the event he had been sent to avert. He described himself to journalists as nothing more than "a Good Samaritan", and has continued to help his fellow man in Astro City ever since. John JG Roshell has also been struggling with the empyrean challenge of fitting all of Kurt Busiek's ASTRO CITY dialogue into balloons with the regular Samaritan font, so he created the Samaritan Tall font to help his fellow comic book letterers! Kamryn is an updated overhaul of an earlier project. This version retains a distinct retro look with swashes and rounded serifs. This gives it a wholesome feel that will work well in children’s books, 80’s era apparel, or scrapbooking. European accents and extended punctuation were added along with improved kerning and alternates. Overlap may occur in certain uppercase/lowercase combinations. The 3D versions are equipped with several ligatures that correct this.
