Enzian is the fruit of a yearlong German Chancellor Fellowship sponsored by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Our hope was simple: to make something useful and beautiful out of something that most people consider to be neither. We were fascinated by the complex persona of Blackletter in Germany and drawn to its emotive ornament and its sensual, non-geometry. Two areas in particular, the long-standing rivalry and widely-believed inferiority that Blackletter had with Roman type and Blackletter’s relevance in contemporary culture, became the foundation of the project. The result is Enzian: an invigorated, original Blackletter of uncommon depth and hopefully, a bit of charm. It is warm and expressive, feminine and contemporary, while staying true to its hand-written, calligraphic roots. Enzian is a multi-language, workhorse typeface that can create hierarchy (with unconventional italic and small caps), and has numerals that fit the family. It is a display face that isn't afraid of handling longer text; one that is equally comfortable in headlines and in poetry. Three Day Pass JNL is another addition to the large collection of stencil fonts from Jeff Levine. This design was based on a 1980s clone of a popular lettering guide first sold in the 1950s. To the untrained eye, many of the stencil designs look the same - but there are subtle nuances in the shapes of the letters and numbers that makes each font unique and slightly different.

Bushing is a quick serif experiment going for open light display type. For years I have always stopped and really liked what I saw with fonts like the original Cushing from the turn of the 20th century. This time the desire for a font was stirred by Felici's article in CreativePro on fonts from the beginning of the 20th century, especially his captures of Cushing No. 2 and the version commissioned for Norwood press from ATF. I'm not interested in historically accurate reconstructions. My desire is for the general feel I get when I see a font. As a result, Bushing has little to do with Cushing (other than the last six letters). But it is a Serif font with small serifs and a huge x-height with a very open feel. I like it. I hope you do also. I made it into a limited display version of OpenType Pro. I added small caps and oldstyle figures, as I can hardly work without them. But ligatures seemed silly for this one.

Hologram is a font inspired by a combination of the future and the past. The intention was to design a font that was most effective when applied to Largely Displayed text like Headings, rather than for smaller extended bodies of text. There are 3 distinctive styles offered in the Hologram font family. Each style contains over 350+ Glyphs per style with support for up to 26 Languages as well as specialised kerning & spacing. Display Sans: This style is the cleanest of the 3 fonts. There are no serifs attached to the ends of the strokes, although the stroke weight is varied from thick to thin depending on the letters. HWT Konop is a monospaced (fixed-width) typeface that is also square! Designed by Mark Simonson (Proxima Nova) as square characters that can be arranged vertically or horizontally and in any orientation. To a traditional letterpress job printer, a font like this wouldn’t make much sense. But to a modern letterpress printer it is an unusual and creative design toolkit. The bold gothic style is reminiscent of gothic wood types but more geometric. Since the characters are meant to be used in any orientation, the usual optical adjustments, such as making verticals thicker than horizontals and making tops smaller than bottoms are set aside. This results in a quirky but charming design. To provide more design options, Simonson came up with a modular system consisting of three sizes: 12-line, 8-line, and 6-line. These three sizes can be used together like Lego® bricks, with endless arrangements possible. And the sidebearing match so that characters always align when different sizes are used together. The digital version of Konop replicates the wood type version as much as possible, including the three different size designs. It includes OpenType stylistic sets that allow most characters to be rotated in place, 90° left, 90° right, or 180°, just like the wood type version. DT PaperType has evolved and morphed over time from quite distant origins. I previously created DT Paperside. It was neither Papyrus nor SSI Countryside, but was inspired in some ways by the Papyrus form, although untextured and smoother, and had the more open dimensions and proportions, similar to that of Countryside SSi, with its larger easily readable lowercase body, and more consistent, shorter stems. DT Paperside had an open scripted feel which was pleasing to the eye and easy to read. DT PaperType has since been crafted from of the original Paperside font. The Organic flow and comfortable form of Paperside has been retained, but it has been shifted very much from the feel of a script font, into a quality, extremely readable, organic and friendly, serif font, retaining its clarity, while adding a great deal of pose and class. This font is primarily suited to body text, and as such is extremely readable. It does however also make an excellent Display font, and comes with a full set of over sized Caps that drop below the line to stand out on a headline when required. Paperside can also automatically enhance the first letter of most sentences, and changes other letters to suit their position within words, and the letters they appear beside. Now comes with an italic that curves and softens various letters. For best results, use this ‘smart font’ with Contextual Ligatures turned on. Mulitiple Stylistic Alternatives are included. Inspiration for this fonts predecessor (Paperside) came from two other fonts. Inspired by the type elements of 17th century Dutch mapmaking, Boncaire Titling provides you with a historic yet adventurous look for your library. This addition from insigne found its muse in a map of Curacao by Dutch cartographer Gerard Van Keulen, a member of the prosperous Van Keulen family from Amsterdam, who were engaged in the manufacture of maps for seafaring. Much thanks on this project goes to The Norman B. Leventhal Map Center, housed at the Boston Public Library. Through the centers kindness, I was able to view a number of period maps in person and to meet with curators, who explained more about the Van Keulen family and the way maps of the period were created. While I studied the maps, I narrowed in on some of the original types unique idiosyncrasies. For instance, the long, exaggerated serifs, which give the forms a sense of stability, aid in the faces legibility--largely a byproduct of the engraving method that was used to create the metal plates for manufacturing these maps. In creating Boncaire Titling, I decided to capture these unique idiosyncrasies, embracing the character of the engravings rather than removing them entirely through over-refining the forms. The result is an elegant family with far more than seafaring potential. This font has a full range of six weights, from thin to black. It also includes a wide variety of OpenType alternates. All insigne fonts are fully loaded with OpenType features. Boncaire Titling is also equipped for complex professional typography, including alternates, smaller titling caps and plenty of alts, including normalized capitals and lowercase letters. There are over 30 autoreplacing ligatures, and the face includes a number of numeral sets, including fractions, old-style and lining figures with superiors and inferiors. RensGazet is a decorative blackletter typeface with elaborate upper-case letters and condensed lower-case characters. It was inspired by the masthead of a short-lived weekly newspaper, The Rensselaer Gazette, which was published from 1857 until 1860. I could not find any existing digitized fonts that replicated this old typeface, so I decided to create an interpretation of it. I had samples of few letters in large point sizes and a number of others at a small point size, though these were blurry and not sharply defined. As a result, this typeface is undoubtedly considerably different from the original. Also, my spacing is much tighter than that in the source samples.

We just had the Eurovision Song Contest here in Holland. I quite like to watch it, as it is usually a freak show of kitsch, political incorrectness and often really bad music. But it is a laugh and this year was no different. It inspired me to create this particular font with this particular name. Sing Along is a happy, wobbly, kitschy font that comes with a bit of ‘over-the-topness’, a few personality issues and an unsteady gait. Needless to say, it is politically incorrect, but that, my friends, is not necessarily a bad thing.

Runway is the font that will satisfy the need for speed in your design. Simple lines and curves, a commanding slant, and big sturdy shapes made to cruise at any speed or altitude, through summer breeze or horrible snowstorms. Runway was designed to be tight like an engine chain, powerful like the hum of the engine itself, and simply the best choice when it comes to strength and velocity in design. Initially Runway was meant to be a single font. But during the spacing and kerning stages, Patrick noticed that most of the letters, especially the vowels and the s, can clasp stylishly with the L or the T to make some really funky combinations. That's how the Alternates font was born. After building a few alternates and about 40 "clasped" combinations around the L and the T, the decision was made to take Runway to the next level: OpenType. The OpenType version of Runway is a single font that contains some serious font magic. Some of the many features the font includes: Over 430 characters for that great character map utility you have, automatic to-and-fro small-capping, discretionary ligatures that call up some pretty funky combinations automatically as you type, and a lot of stylistic and contextual alternates for many characters, ligatures and composites. Stanzer is an interpretation of wood type combined with the idea of modern stencils. Instead of cutting every letter, we are presenting an example of how a modern stencil typeface could look like, as we have come to the conclusion that almost every letter works without cutting it. Stanzer is a Unicase typeface, available in three OpenType weights: Black, Shadow and Block. Stanzer first started as part of our diploma 2010 (it was called Stanley at that time). The basic idea behind this typeface is that it is fully stencil usable, and, unlike other stencil fonts, does not require any bridges (except for the O and Q). Almost every letter can be sprayed without inserting planks. However, Stanzer also offers the display weight Block, which is only suitable for print or online usage.

Remember when you first saw the credits of a Woody Allen movie and thought, "I love that typeface!" Well, maybe that was just us. That typeface—Windsor (specifically Windsor Light Condensed)—is a classic. But it has problems. The letterforms are sometimes REALLY wonky. And the ampersand is a tragedy. Plus, there's no italic, and the weights and widths available in digital form are a hodgepodge. That's where Mrs. Keppel comes in. Milton Glaser’s Kitchen Typeface from the mid 1970s exemplifies the bold 3-D art deco revival genre that was a trademark of the Glaser style. This typeface resulted from his involvement in the design of the The Big Kitchen in the World Trade Center’s concourse in New York City. The new P22 Glaser Kitchen takes on the technical challenge of overlapping 3-D shadows by offering two styles. P22 Glaser Kitchen Regular is spaced out so that the shadows do not overlap the white spaces of the neighboring letters. Whereas the P22 Glaser Kitchen 3D Fill and 3D Shadow can be used layered on top of one another to achieve the tight spacing intended by Glaser. P22 Glaser Kitchen was based on original drawings and phototype proofs from the Milton Glaser Studios archives. Typographic punctuation and sorts were imagined by James Grieshaber to work with Glaser’s design, as well as diacritics to accommodate most European languages. Hollywood Revue JNL gets its design inspiration and name from a vintage movie poster for "The Hollywood Revue of 1929". The letter style shows early Art Deco influences, yet the hand lettering was done in the late 1920s toward the end of the Art Nouveau period. MGM produced this early "talkie" all-star musical with a cast that included Jack Benny, John Gilbert, Conrad Nagel, Laurel and Hardy, Buster Keaton, Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, Polly Moran and many others. This is the motion picture where Cliff ("Ukelele Ike") Edwards introduced "Singin' in the Rain" (composed by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown). Years later, Freed was a producer at MGM and gathered up many of the songs he and Brown wrote during the 1920s to form the musical core of the 1952 Gene Kelly-Debbie Reynolds-Donald O'Conner musical "Singin' in the Rain".
