The Maiandra family of typefaces were inspired by an early example of Oswald Cooper's hand-lettering, as seen in an advertisement for a book on home furnishing, circa 1909. Although many of Oz Cooper's letterform designs were cast in metal type, this particular one was not. Cooper's design itself was inspired by examples of letterforms he had admired in his study of Greek epigraphy (inscriptions). Cooper combined those ancient forms with the flair characteristic of design styles of his time. The result was an attractive design possessing subtle, purposeful irregularities, or "meanders" in his skilled brushwork. The Cooper design exhibits a unique warmth and harmony in text, while presenting a compelling rhythm, color and texture on the page. "Realizing the presence of this uniform warmth and readability," notes Dennis, "I decided to expand the design into a family of three weights with companion italics." The weights for the Maiandra family were selected for their versatility in usage over a broad range of output device resolutions. Indeed, "the consideration of eventual display resolutions, be they for screen or printer, provided the greatest challenge in the design of this typeface family," explains Dennis. Creating shapes that conform to the rigors of digital letterforms and modern rendering environments, without losing the unique characteristics of Oz Cooper's original design, is what Dennis has accomplished with his tribute to this great designer of the past. Maiandra, whose name derives from the Greek 'maiandros', meaning 'meander,' is intended for extended text use, as well as for informal subject matter, such as business correspondence, brochures and broadsides. "An example of a good use for Maiandra," notes Dennis, "is in printed matter relating to the turn-of-the-century art period known as the Arts and Crafts Movement. It can stand alone or be used with designs that complement its shape and color."

Catskin is a fairytale by The Brothers Grimm. The story is about a king who has a beautiful wife and daughter - you know, the basic fairytale stuff. Eventyr is danish and means fairytale. You may know the name of the famous danish author, HC Andersen, who was well known for his fairytales. Actually I finished this font while listening to one of his fairytales, and that inspired me to call this font Eventyr. Most fairytales include the number 3 (3 choices, 3 wishes ... etc) but this font has the number 4 - because you have 4 slightly different versions of each letter to choose from. This version of Goudy Text is based on drawings from which Frederic Goudy based his Goudy Text typeface. However, there is a big difference between his original drawings (in The Alphabet and Elements of Lettering) and the subsequent metal type version, and my version maintains the greater warmth (and irregularities) of the original drawings. Goudy's Lombardy caps look especially nice when used as initial capitals with Goudy Text.

The hand-lettered movie titles from one of the William Powell-Myrna Loy "Thin Man" series of films was the basis for Intrigue JNL. Although the lettering style is decidedly from the Art Deco era, it also bears a strong resemblance to the 1980s techno movement; this font being adaptable to any era or design theme.

Pilgrim is a re-cut of a Linotype face that Eric Gill originally designed for a book published by the Limited Edition Club of New York. Admired for its tranquil dignity, the Pilgrim type is both firm and elegant. Its general appearance resembles that of Gill’s Joanna font family. The contrast of the font is not very strong. The serifs are bracketed. Eric Gill, who designed the type on which Pilgrim is closely based, observed one sort of model for his lettering - the incised monumental letter of Roman origin. This is clearly seen in his capitals, but is also true of his lowercase letters, which have little of the calligraphic or engraved qualities of most other type designs. Gill’s types are Roman in the classic sense, yet also particular to Gill himself.

I've always been drawn to the beautiful typography of whiskey, gin, rum & bourbon bottle labels, as they enhanced the history that is behind this aged old spirits. A combination of elegant scripts and rugged serifs, these labels give sensibility to the slow process which these spirits go through in the distilling process.

This font clearly illustrates Jan Tschichold’s dictum that the New Typography would employ “the simplest form” and “the minimum means.” Based on his typeface Transito, the letterforms are as fresh and vibrant today as they were when introduced in 1931. All versions of this font include the Unicode 1250 Central European character set in addition to the standard Unicode 1252 Latin set.

Linotype Lichtwerk, from German designer Bernd Pfannkuchen, is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contest 1999 for inclusion on the Take Type 3 CD. This display font contains very narrow forms with a high x-height. It is reminiscent of the constructivism of the 1920s and was designed with a small number of basic forms. The high, thin letters form words and an overall picture which almost flickers on the page. Linotype Lichtwerk with its technical look is suited exclusively for headlines.

Tisdall Script is based upon the brush-drawn script lettering of Hans Tisdall, who was the designer of many distinctive lettered book jackets for Jonathan Cape in the 1950s. Bisco Condensed is a small capital design inspired by hand lettered memorial wall art from the Harlem section of New York City. As a memorial, this design is dedicated to a type design colleague who lost his long battle with cancer. This font is a tribute to his strength and his liveliness. The original idea for Bisco Condensed was to capture the energy of those unique "streetforms" in a text/display design and encapsulate them into a lively & fluid type design with a high level of readability at all point sizes. Huai and Huai Thai marks the first professional typeface release by Potch Auacherdkul and represents the culmination of research into the duality of influences between handwritten, vernacular Thai lettering and Latin typefaces. The result is a warm, expressive typeface that doesn’t abandon the human hands and the language that produced them. With Thai script, there are two different terminal styles—the Loop terminal style, associated with the original forms of Thai glyphs; and the Loopless, which has evolved to best coordinate with Latin sans serif typefaces. In recent years, this Thai Loopless style has continued to influence and even change to become ‘more Latin.’ One would go so far as to define these heavily Latin-influenced typefaces as Thai Latinized. This curiosity with shifting influences, turns the idea around and explores what would happen if the vernacular Thai scripts actually influenced their Latin counterparts instead. An Inversion of Thai Latinized is the result. The street signs of Bangkok, local vernacular writing, quick, fluid strokes… these influences form the DNA behind the Huai Thai typeface. Refining and systematizing those natural, handwritten strokes into a Thai typeface and then using those solutions to serve as the pioneer proportions behind the development of its Latin script companion was the product. Huai adopted the essence of these Thai glyphs into the Latin and uniquely embraced the contemporary writing system (and soul) of the Thai people in its letterforms.

This is the first of several Eastern fonts I have created and is the prize of the collection. The Pravoslavnie font is highly decorative, with a more complicated letter ‘a’ and a series of flourishes substituting for punctuation. Like its sister font, Pravoslavnie 3 is highly decorative. It differs from the first version of this font, as it has a less decorative ‘a,’ full punctuation marks, and less ornate number forms.
