Bauhaus Geometric, economical, functional... The good, wholesome, modernist values that once fired up the tutors and students of the Bauhaus became the inspiration for FS Dillon after an exploration of the work of the pre-war art and design powerhouse in the Fontsmith studio. The font combines simplicity and directness with a characteristic Fontsmith warmth. Letterforms are compact, with a generous x-height, and built for maximum clarity and impact. The Bauhaus sought beauty through function. FS Dillon achieves it. Made for TV The weights of fonts for TV sometimes have to be adjusted so as not to “blow” on-screen. FS Dillon was originally drawn for the on-screen presentation branding of Film Four, whose primary colour was red. Black type on a red background looks heavier than white, so Dillon needed two weights that would allow white and black type to be used together, looking balanced and equal. Type design is an organic process. Years after developing FS Dillon, we revisited it, redrawing elements and adding italics to maintain consistency. Olympic You don’t get a much higher confirmation of the functional fitness of a typeface than to have it selected to guide visitors around an Olympic complex. FS Dillon was selected as the font for signage at some of the key venues at the London 2012 Olympic Park, helping to get spectators, athletes and officials from all over the world to their seats and starting blocks on time.

DF Korolev is a 72 weight geometric sans serif family based on lettering by an anonymous Soviet graphic designer from the propaganda displays at the Communist Red Square parade in 1937. It has been named in honor of Sergey Pavlovich Korolyov, or Korolev, considered by many to be the father of practical astronomics. Rational and robust, it is also elegant and refined. Tracings done in Illustrator over a photograph featuring this type pinned down some of the basic character shapes. These were then imported into FontLab, where the full glyph complement was developed. The lower-case has been designed from scratch, and adheres to the structural logic of the uppercase as closely as possible. The complete Korolev super-family includes standard, italic, condensed, and compressed versions, each in five weights. The Alternate families come with a double-story “a”. Authoritative yet friendly, Korolev Rounded is a versatile addition to the Korolev range.

Hua type family is a sans-serif with very humanist details to represent the essence of nature. It features 14 weights from the very thin to the very bold, generously covering a wide range of the natural spectrum. Aiming to represent the soft and elegant side of nature, Hua features very unique italics that have their own take on the identity. The letterforms of the italic fonts are inspired by the lineage of both traditional calligraphic approaches for serifs and much simpler forms for sans-serifs. Kis Classico™ is named after the Hungarian monk Miklós Kis who traveled to Amsterdam at the end of the seventeenth century to learn the art of printing. Amsterdam was a center of printing and punchcutting, and Kis cut his own type there in about 1685. For centuries, Kis's type was wrongly attributed to Anton Janson, a Dutch punchcutter who worked in Leipzig in the seventeenth century. Most versions of this type still go by the name Janson. In 1993, the Italian/Swedish type designer Franko Luin completed Kis Classico, his own contemporary interpretation of the Kis types. About the Kis/Janson story, Luin says: If you understand Hungarian I recommend you read the monograph, 'Tótfalusi Kis Miklós' by György Haiman, published in 1972 by Magyar Helikon. It has hundreds of reproductions from his Amsterdam period and from the time when he was an established printer in Kolozsvár (today's Cluj in Romania)." Kis Classico has five weights, and is an admirable version of this classic type.

I arrived this concept as a means to fulfil a need for a simple yet radical semi-sans with rounded terminals. My concept called for a modular approach so a single weight font family resulted, the monoline stroke weights being one-eighth of the cap height and the x-height five-eights, the descent two units. Within these constraints I found it was simple to devise an alphabet which met my need for quirkiness whilst retaining its legibility. As for the outline, shadow and contour variants - well they just seem to work. If you are wondering - and you don't hail from the "Land Downunder" - Canberra is our nation's capital; Bondi - "water breaking over rocks" a beautiful beach in Sydney; Uluru is the name given to the world's largest pebble, (formerly known as Ayers Rock); Kakadu is a national park in the "Top End" and Koomerang means "hill of clouds" - all place names in their respective Australian indigenous languages. Drawn shortly before Jim Rimmer's passing in 2010, Loxley was designed to be used in a fine press edition of the folklore story of Robin Hood. It was named after the cited birthplace of the story's classic hero. Loxley's shapes were inspired the same early Roman faces (such as Subiaco from the late 1400s) that influenced Frederick Goudy's Aries, Franciscan and Goudry Thirty types. It exhibits the preculiarities of Jim's left-handed calligraphy, as well as his outside-the-box thinking with exit strokes and serif variations. Loxley was remastered for the latest technologies in 2013. Now it comes with a character set of over 450 glyphs, including plenty of stylistic alternates, a full compliment of f-ligatures, a Th-ligature, basic fractions, ordinals, a long s for historic setting, comprehensive class-based kerning, and extended Latin language support. 20% of this font's revenues will be donated to the Canada Type Scholarship Fund, supporting higher typography education in Canada.

Stevens Titling refers to the classic Roman alphabet as it appears on the Trajan column and numerous other monuments. With its realistic brush strokes, it shows the letterforms as they might have been sketched on the marble before the stonecutter reached for his hammer and chisel. The four fonts that constitute the Stevens Titling suite are named after animals — badger, boar, sable and wolf –, each known for the specific character of its hairs when used to make painting brushes. Sable Brush is the most formal and elegant, with solid forms which show no obvious trace of the handdrawn brush stroke; it comes with a set of small capitals for those classical titles preferred by Hollywood. In fact, each of these fonts would do a great job as a film title and poster font. The Badger Brush variant is compact and firm; Boar Brush is dramatic, and in Wolf Brush each part of the letter is made up of realistic, dry strokes.

Adagio is a modern type family. It consists of 3 main varieties: sans, serif and slab. Each one of them has its own “true italic” set. All of the styles together have over 400 characters in 9 different thicknesses. The Adagio family was created mostly for company identities. The idea was to create a wide range of different varieties which are stylistically consistent. Adagio Serif - Characterises with strong contrast and high detail in calligraphic character cuts, what gives it a light feeling. Unlike the Slab version, serif variety has asymmetrical serifs. Thanks to large X length, and highly stretched descenders, it also works correct in longer text, while its strong detail is good for headlines. The Serif version is a great complement for Adagio Sans and Adagio Slab.
