I saw an old logo for Giro d'Italia on telly, and was just smitten by the truly ugly type: just ruler and compass work, no intakes or optical corrections whatsoever. I just had to turn that into a font.

Between twilight and daybreak it is said that the dark side of the human psyche eclipses the sun that shines from the depths of our souls. Certainty turns to doubt, clarity becomes confusion, man turns into wolf, the dead wake, vampires seduce the young are restless and milk boils over on the stove. Those that seek only to bathe in the light of a romantic new moon often end their tragic lives soaked in nothing other than their own blood, and the milk spilt on the stovetop has no one left to cry over it. There are fifty shades of grey during those hours after sunset and I think just as many in my porridge this morning. Yes, okay, I admit it, I spoiled the milk! This porridge tastes like it was left in a graveyard overnight. Death warmed over. Gothic and lumpy. Just like the Buried weights of this font.

The name of this font brings back memories of an old fried chicken restaurant in Willow Springs Illinois circa 1960’s and 1970’s, my family would all get in the car and take a long drive down to an old country road Illionis Rt 171 through a forest preserve where we’d come upon the old Willowbrook motel with a bar and restaurant next door. The restaurant was called Kegal’s, when you entered the building you had to walk through the smoky bar first to get to the restaurant, I can still see the hard wood floors with all the finish worn off from decades of foot traffic. Up until the mid 1960’s Kegal’s used to raise their own chickens behind the restaurant, back then fried chicken in the Midwest was either coated in flour or bread crumbs, Kegal’s was covered in a beautiful layer of golden bread crumbs. Before your meal arrived they’d bring a basket of dinner rolls along with crackers, bread sticks and country butter, on the side they’d serve coleslaw with a vinegar sauce, which is very common in the Midwest, the first time you try it your face puckers up like you just sucked on a lemon but you get used it over time. After waiting for what seemed like forever to a child the waitress comes out of the kitchen with a huge tray of that golden deliciousness and your mouth begins to water, in her other hand was another tray filled to overflowing with crinkle cut french fries all made by hand, I’d eat a hole handful of those french fries first then take a bite of that tender juicy farm raised chicken. Today a fine Italian restaurant occupies the old Kegal’s building and the motel is long gone, only my fond memories remain. Fast forward to 2020 and FontMesa has just made some Fried Chicken as an eight weight type font family with alternates. ITC Aspera is the product of graphic experimentation. Olivera Stojadinovic, who designed the face, recalls, Over the last 15 years, I have made several small prints using Cyrillic characters. Often, I made my first sketches with a special pointed brush which was difficult to manipulate well, but once tamed, gave me interesting results." Stojadinovic decided to see if she could reproduce the unique brush quality in digital form. "The idea was to preserve the look of strokes made by my brush, so I kept the scanned shapes as close as possible to the originals, making interventions just to maintain consistent proportions, slope and weight." While this typeface is not a connecting script, Stojadinovic did create a number of letters, such as the 'o' and 's' that are natural connecting characters. She also drew a set of ligatures and matching ornaments to accompany the design."

My son’s name is Ata Caner Yüksel. After building this character, I wanted to honor him by using his name for this font. I think it fully reflects the character I created in my mind. Ata Rounded, only one of the four other deep end with rounded corners consist of sharpened flat plate. Matched to one another and are optimized for screen. I became interested in designing Bodoni Classic because of a lazy graphic designer at Jacques Damase publishing house. He had to change a single letter on a bookcover about J. B. BODONI. The French call him Jean Baptiste instead of Giambattista! And that unknown graphic designer just took any old “J” from some newly cut Bodoni. All the new Bodoni cuts have square serifs, whereas the originals had rounded serifs and slightly concave feet. The single letter “J” with the squared off serif was for me like a road sign to start redesigning the entire Bodoni family. That’s exactly what I started in 1993 and a dozen years later I am finished. Okay, I am still adding new Bodoni Classics, but those are my personal additions. Quadratique is the first font of a large family that was originated in geometric patterns. We developed a system through a square of 6 modules of side, which are transformed and combined to give up 104 originals glyphs. As a result, each letter is a subfamily that may be combined by overlapping (A, a, a.salt and a.swsh) and thus generate more than 365 glyphs, or thousands if we combine different letters. Quadratique is so easy to use, that user does not need guidance. You just must typeset [aaaa, bbbb, etc.] and start to play, try to make that each module overlapping with others and repeat [(a + A) (a + A) (a + A), etc.] You may create thousands of new patterns and creative frames just combining different modules.

For some reason I had Paul Simon’s song ‘You Can Call Me All’ in my head when I was busy working on this font, so I just had to call it Bonedigger. Bonedigger does not dig bones, but it does have ‘heavy bones’, as it is quite big. Bonedigger is seriously eroded and would look great on book covers and product packaging. It comes in a lovely regular and italic style and a seriously twisted inline style (with, of course, its own italic). As the song goes: With a knick-knack paddywhack, give the dog a bone, this old font came rolling home.

XyloScript is my first script with a woodcut look to it. Still, it is very elegant. Xylo is Greek and means “wood”. This script is another one I designed in the tradition of the 18th-century English calligrapher George Bickham and the 19th-century American calligrapher Platt Rogers Spencer. I like it, your very crafty Gert Wiescher BTW if your font manager tells you that the font is corrupted, just ignore that! This script is very complex and that’s causing some font managers to say the font is corrupted. I have tested it and it works fine!

Since I am still in a Japanese mood, I decided to name this font after my favourite pastime in Japan: hunting for the smallest, nicest sushi bar in town. After all, there’s just nothing like eating freshly made sushi and washing it all down with a cup of green tea or a warm sake. Sushi Bar is a very detailed brush font - all caps, but upper and lower case differ and can be mixed. It is an ideal font for posters, albums, headlines and book covers. I've had a lot of lovely cakes through the years (My wife is a great cook!) But I've also tried some really...ehem...not so good cakes. Actually, the worst cake I ever had, was at work - if you didn't know, I work as a kindergarten teacher - and the cake was made by one of the kids! Knucklebones is a game that is played with the knucklebones of sheep. I bought a set in Mongolia, which I stumbled upon when I was cleaning out the attic. Knucklebones font is a rough brush font, which comes in three styles: Knucklebones Regular, a slightly slanted version, Knucklebones Italic, a very slanted style and Knucklebones Upright, which looks like the name implies. Knucklebones is a very useful all caps typeface, which would look great on posters, product packaging and book covers - but don’t take my word for it: just grab this font and get creative with it!
