Camelot was the first of over 100 typefaces designed by Frederic Goudy. The upper case characters were drawn in 1896 for the Dickinson Type Foundry. Auriol and Auriol Flowers were designed by Georges Auriol, born Jean Georges Huyot, in the early 20th century. Home Style is a revival of a very old font previously thought to have been designed by Joseph Gillé in or around the year 1820, however recent evidence from France suggests that an artist by the name of Silvestre from the same time period may be the true designer of this font. Sign Helpers JNL is a collection of silhouette images carefully redrawn from two distinct sources. Prior to their bankruptcy in 1984, the Holes-Webway Company of St. Cloud, MN produced thousands of their "Webway" sign kits that were utilized by merchants, libraries and schools throughout the country. At one point they included in their sales catalog a selection of die-cut images for embellishing sign work. In the late 50s and throughout the 60s, the Joseph Struhl Company (now known as Magic Master Industries) produced cling vinyl sign kits for business, and a home movie titling set for do-it-yourself film makers. This set also featured die-cut embellishments. A generous selection of designs from both kits have been faithfully re-drawn in digital form to pay tribute to two innovative companies. Other fonts based on products from these companies are Sign Kit JNL (Webway® Sign Kit), Cling Vinyl JNL, and Sign Maker JNL (Magic Master® Sign Kits). At least, that is what I believe. Radical Fortune is a font I made after a period in my life that could have ended with a really nice sum of money in my hands - but which I didn’t take. I had to give up too much of myself and that just didn’t feel right. I made Radical Fortune to keep me from thinking too much - and, symbolically, I used a really old and cheap marker pen to draw out the glyphs!

Italian Old Style™ was designed by Frederic W. Goudy for the Lanston Monotype Company in the USA. Goudy was asked by Monotype to copy Cloister Oldstyle, a successful font that belonged to a competing foundry (it was designed by Morris Fuller Benton, see Cloister Open Face). Goudy refused on grounds of ethics, and instead talked Monotype into producing a new face. This he based freely on fifteenth century Venetian types, which were the same historical models used by Benton for Cloister and later by Bruce Rogers for Centaur. Yet again, a font inspired by my work as a kindergarten teacher! The other day, I had a conversation with some of the kids, about what they ate for breakfast. Some had oatmeal, some bread and others yogurt. But this kid - he insisted that every morning, his mother would serve him cookies, “morning cookies”. It sounded too good to be true, and when I asked his mother, it turned out that “cookies” were actually bread, but to make it sound more appetising, they called it cookies! The letters are rounded and in some way quite naive, but still clear and legible. With an extreme ascender and descender, the font stands out with its oddities. I’ve added 3 different versions of each lowercase letter!
