Most folks might picture wood type lettering as the fancy styles of the 1880s which so perfectly evoked images of the Old West. Occasionally there is an exception to that rule, as an online image of some vintage wood letters with an Art Deco influence inspired a revival as a digital type face. Wood Lined JNL features a bold alphabet with an engraved line throughout the characters, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The lettering style of Location JNL is based on sets of "vintage" metal house identification letters and numbers seen for sale online. Educator JNL joins the large library of Jeff Levine's stencil fonts and was re-drawn from a set of individual letter stencils with the distinctive look of Franklin Gothic. All of the irregularities of the original die-cut letter forms were left intact, giving a "real world" look to the font.

Afternoon Edition JNL is another classic typeface (with Caslon influence) re-drawn from screen captures of vintage newspaper headlines. The font joins Final Edition JNL, Evening Paper JNL and Morning Paper JNL as a mini-collection of type styles used to grab a reader's attention in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.

Amongst some pages scanned and posted online of old wood type alphabets comes this lovely, ornamental design in a reversed style of white lettering on black rectangular boxes. This classic set of wood type is now available digitally as Wood Fancy Reverse JNL. There is a narrow blank box on the “less than” key for use as an end cap, and a wider blank box on the “greater than” key to use between words as a blank space if so desired.

An image spotted online showed a rendering of a ladies’ fashions storefront that had appeared in the Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company’s 1939 brochure. The signage consisted of the hand lettered word ‘Apparel’, and was done in a variant of the Art Deco stencil style of lettering that’s most recognizable in Futura Black. From these few sign letters came the inspiration for a digital font of the same name, Apparel JNL – which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

I was immediately fascinated with the font, Breitfette Unziale, used for Erol Büyükburç's Hop Dedik album cover when I discovered this album. I designed a completely brand new typeface that is inspired by it called Erol Unziale but I also wanted to digitize and revive this typeface since I couldn’t find a digital version of it anywhere online. Dan Hardie, a Miami-based graphic artist and creative consultant at Mutiny, Inc. shared an image he’d spotted online of some interesting signage formerly on the front of the Miami Medical Building. Comprised of hand-cut metal characters (with a thoroughly avant-garde “Art Deco meets Modernist” approach), this instantly became a font design idea unusual and quirky enough to develop as a digital typeface. The end result is Office Visit JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

I bought something online, but when I received it, it wasn’t exactly what I had hoped it would be. So I read the return policy and sent it back. And… came up with this font and its name in the process! Return Policy is a hand drawn slab serif, inspired by a bunch of slab serifs from the early 20th century. The P22 Platten font family has been revisited and expanded by designer Colin Kahn. Platten is based on lettering found in German fountain pen practice books from the 1920s (you may have seen the similar Speedball books in the US). This round tip pen lettering is comparable to the basic forms used in grammar school teaching alphabets, but with a few original characteristics. Renowned British designer Martin Wait designed Balmoral in 1978. Balmoral is an elegant and free-flowing copperplate script style typeface. Stylin is…stylin! It’s unique in that some of the letters join together where you wouldn’t expect (mostly at the top of the letters). Stylin is very legible at small sizes and is great for body copy, falling somewhere between a monoline sans serif and humanist. Coronet is a non-joining script font first issued by Ludlow. The capitals have been drawn with a degree of freedom whereas the lowercase are more formal in structure. The ascending lowercase letters of the Coronet font are quite tall, descenders are short. Coronet is a useful script for informal occasions, such as invitations, flyers and greetings cards.
