Abril is an extension of the Abril typographic system that was engineered as a response to a very specific requirement from the editorial design community: a low contrast typeface for head- lines. Given its broad range of styles though, Abril deserves to be considered a separate font family on its own. Based on the original text styles of Abril, the letter shapes are sturdy, very legible, and deliver a newsy and trustworthy feel. The accented editorial style of the Scotch Roman finds continuity in this new type family, but some of the details have been ironed out for improved performance in headline, both in print and on screen. The family is conceived as four series of different widths, with four weights in each series plus matching italics, a total of 32 fonts. This wide range of styles allows for setting titles at almost any size. Coil feels comfortable like a well-worn pair of shoes. It could easily pass for an assertive industrial European sans serif of the early 1960s with its slight reverse contrast, monotonous proportions, and squared-off curves, if not for its less predictable side. What appears initially as ellipses upon closer inspection turns out to be irregular shapes, closer to an inverted egg than an oval. The s looks topsy-turvy with its higher curve that is larger than the lower. Some terminal strokes overhang the bowl (as in the a), others open flat (as in the Q, the f, the j, and the t). The resulting effect shakes up this seemingly “retro” face just to make it new. Our midcentury recollections are slightly distorted and reinterpreted by this ironic typeface making it fresh while deceptively cozy and familiar. Coil’s high x-height and even texture make it readable even in small sizes despite its tight apertures. Britti Sans is a modern grotesque typeface that has geometric details and deep roots in industrial design principles. Cal Roman Black is one more font from the PKG “Cal” (Calligraphic) group. This time for calligraphic sketches we used a wide brush instead of the iron pen. Instead of minuscule letters, there are Small Caps (which are almost the same weight as capitals). There was an intention to keep the spacing as small as possible, because of that, there is no obvious difference in the stroke thickness of the capitals and the lowercase capital letters. The difference in height is only one-third of the brush-width. Cal Roman Black font is rhythmic, informal, dark and hefty... romantic and strong at the same time (just like Ferdinand). As such, this font is widely used in the typographic creation of shorter and closely packed text forms such as magazine headlines, brochures and book covers, t-shirt designs, logos, posters, movie spots, banners...

The Vondelpark is the famous Amsterdam city park, 47 hectares stretching out from Leidseplein to the Amstelveenseweg. It was founded in 1864 when a group of well-to-do Amsterdam citizens got together and bought land at the (then) edge of the city centre in order to create a park ‘for riding and strolling’. Designed by architect J.D. Zocher, it opened officially in 1865. The park received its name two years later when a statue of Dutch writer Joost van den Vondel was placed in the park. In the 1960s and 1970s the Vondelpark became a symbol and epicenter of the hippie flower power era. The park was declared a state monument in 1996. Donald DBXL was intrigued by the handmade iron nameplate lettering on the park’s entrance gates, and decided to design VLNL Vondelpark in its glory. The somewhat clumsy iron letters were not revived as is but optimized to turn it into a useful typeface. The all-caps serif with a deliberate constructed feel, contains a Positional Open Type feature that places half circles on the vertical stems, at the beginning and end of a word, to enliven the rhythm.

Freehand is a type system designed by Debora Manetti and Francesco Canovaro to emulate the natural appearance of handmade brush writing. Open type ligature substitutions are used to randomly alternate between different versions of each character to give the final output a realistic, uneven look. The main typeface of the system is a wide freestyle brush cursive, featuring over four hundreds of alternate version for characters and double letter ligatures. A "brush easy" version is included without the substitutions if you need more consistent look in your design and better control over letter variation through the glyph panel. The two freehand brush weights are complemented by two sets of icons of matching style, one for ui design with navigation icons and one with food icons. The system also includes a blockletter family in two weights, to be used together with the other fonts to create variation and contrast in your design. Freehand covers over 40 languages that use the Latin alphabet, with a full range of accents and diacritics.

The inspiration source for MFC Phonograph Monogram is a vintage monogram specimen named “Kent” showing only a CBA sample. It was a style I could find no other reference for, but was desperate to recreate this record like styling of monogram. Finally, it all comes to life in MFC Phonograph Monogram. I even threw in a little dog and phonograph icons hidden in the font as decorative icons reminicent of old Victrola records. Phonograph Monogram supports two and three letter monograms, although the two letter style break from the circular record design and creates a zulu style shield design. MFC Phonograph Monogram uses the Ligatures feature, available in most OpenType savvy applications, such as Adobe Illustrator CS (see Fig. 1). The Ligatures feature is typically enabled automatically, but you may need to confirm this in your program if you are not certain. If any second lowercase letter typed does not automatically switch to form the right side of the rounded form, you do not have Ligatures enabled.

Its open counters and large x height give it excellent performance in small sizes. On the other hand, its curved diagonals, generous width and soft shapes give it a friendly but functional personality for a wide range of messages and voices. We recommend the four most extreme weights (Thin, ExtraLight, Black, and Heavy) for large sizes starting at 18 points, and the five intermediate weights (Light, Book, Regular, Medium, and Bold) for small sizes starting at 7 points.

Inspired by the strange, blocky lettering on the sides of a set of a set of plastic kitchen containers in my childhood home, 8th Avenue is a sophisticated, somewhat syncopated font with a retro look and feel that at the same time brings a very modern attitude to your design. 8th Avenue works well as display font for packaging, headlines and logos. Those pastel turquoise plastic boxes from the early 1950s, with white screen printed letters reading FLOUR, SUGAR, COFFEE etc. on one side were a simple quiet presence in our home back then and for decades after. Seeing them, even that soft blue-green colour felt like home. SUGAR, the soul survivor of that set has become one of those mundane items of daily life that somehow become simple icons of another time, ripe with memories. Obviously I had to make a font.
