Capitolium was designed in 1998 at the request of the Agenzia romana per la preparatione del Giubileo for the Jubilee of the Roman Catholic Church in 2000. This type design was the central part of the project for a wayfinding and information system to guide pilgrims and tourists through Rome. Capitolium also continues Rome’s almost uninterrupted two-thousand-year-old tradition of public lettering . It is a modern typeface for the twenty-first century and strongly related to the traditions of Rome. Soon after the completion of this project Unger began contemplating the possibility of bringing the atmosphere of this design to newspapers. Though Capitolium works well in most modern production processes and also on screens, it is too fragile for newsprint. For newspapers sturdier shapes were required as well as more characters to a line of text, and Capitolium News has a bigger x-height than Capitolium. Capitolium News is a thoroughly modern newsface, with classic letterforms linked to a strong tradition. Capitolium News for running text comes in the variations regular, italic, semibold, semibold italic, bold and bold italic. As is possible with most of Unger’s type designs, Capitolium News can be condensed and expanded without any harm to the letterforms. The Morgan Project can be considered a big type family with ‘many styles’ or a set of different types that match with each other. For me it’s one typeface with different versions with deliberate and visible differences according to the propose to which each version was created. The design started in 2000 as a display type with the design of the Morgan Tower, to which more two display versions were added; Morgan Poster and Morgan Big — all together the make our: FTF Morgan Display Kit 1. All three versions consist only in uppercase with alternate letters in the lowercase and a set of special ligatures. Morgan Tower has four variants that differ in width/weight, Morgan Poster has six variants (often called styles), three weights in upright and oblique and Morgan Big has twelve, six weights in upright and oblique. Lately, the FTF Morgan Tex Kit 1 was added. Apropriate versions to use in text setting. Both versions, FTF Morgan Sans and FTF Morgan Sans Condensed share the same structure and character mapping. Four variants each; regular, bold, oblique and bold oblique with a large character set including: small caps, lining and old style figures (here called Office figures) — both tabular —, small caps lining figures, mathematical symbols and fraction figures, and, a set of foreign characters expanding the possibilities of use for a wider range of languages. Characters are distributed in six different font layouts: Lining, Office, Expert, Caps, Figures & Pi.

This font was patterned after a few characters on a genuine old 1913 small portable typewriter. It looks like those early typescripts, rough, irregular and eroded, suggestive of mythical famous authors, such as Hemingway, as well as “serie noire” movies or anonymous state employee working in a gloomy Kafkaesque office. It is a complete alphabetic full font. It can be used as web-site titles, poster design, or book editing. It may be preferable, if possible, when printing, to choose a pale color a little rather than condensed - dark grey instead of heavy black, for example - to give the best appearance and to benefit from the full details. The old typewriter character size is 11 to 12 points, but this font easily supports enlargement.

Slabic is modern slab serif font family available in 12 styles. It’s main characteristics are gently rounded edges, unique serifs and ink traps. The main challenge with Shirah Joie was how not to design just another monoline font, and how to add liveliness while condensing the letters a little bit. Shirah Joie is an OpenType/TTF Unicode font.

Progreso is a condensed, unicase, serif gothic type design inspired by the hand-lettering on Russian posters from the 1920s. Supports most European languages, including modern Greek and most languages that use the Cyrillic alphabet.

Sailfin is a condensed geometric typeface, and works best in text and display applications, such as headline, posters, signage, magazine, product branding, corporate branding, logos and titles. Several alternate characters are included in this typeface.

Haglos Script was inspired by Modern Vintage & Retro style in combination with old American traditional style. It's bold and has amazing swashes. In my examples I show how this script can be used. It's very well suited for logotypes, product labels, food flyer, and others.

Aneba Neue is refreshed version of my old type family. It's a geometric sans serif typeface with a clean feel. The low contrast and high x height is perfect for headlines and display purposes. Aneba Neue contains 5 weights in two different styles - Bold & Slanted.

Nudista is a monolinear, geometric sans-serif based on the proportions of the Purista typeface, released in 2007. The forms are not based strictly on square shape, but rather on a pleasant oval, round shape. The letter outlines are smooth, even technicist, the geometric precision is however compensated in places where it would get in the way of legibility and compromise the desired visual impact. Nudista was originally conceived as a display type, but it is sufficiently legible even in text sizes. Thus, it suits short texts in corporate prints. Carefully chiselled letter curves are sturdy and well suited for the harsh conditions of low-resolution printing devices, they work well on computer screens and mobile phone displays. However, Nudista works best in corporate systems, navigation and orientation systems, where it may be, also thanks to the sufficient range of weights, a good alternative to the well-known and thus a little overused DIN. Naked typeface with no needless decorations humbly serves in all places where too expressive types could be disturbing.

Retro style is hip, so are early 20th century poster fonts. Size is based on these extra condensed letter forms. In the 19th century the need to communicate commercial messages on limited poster space brought up extremely condensed fonts creating a new typographical look. Since not really legible in small sizes these fonts nearly disappeared with the change in the commercial communication in the 20th century. For a couple of years now, these extra condensed fonts have a revival copying the exact historical appearance of its predecessors. Size, though also seeking the inspiration in the historical draft, furthermore aims to interpret this compressed look in a more vivid way by not closing in on the open counters of the round letters, but having its stroke endings slightly curved. Since other characters are defined by straight strokes, Size displays a look more vital and candid, but still distinct, compared to its historical predecessors.

I was working at Bozell Worldwide, an advertising agency, on their yearly promotional pitch. An art director was looking for a condensed informal headline treatment to be used on one of the new ad campaigns. I took several different font designs and started to condense and scale the proportions in the hopes of finding several good solutions. They finally settled on a version of Times Roman, scaled horizontally to about 50 percent proportions. I liked the look so much that I later went back to the drawing board and refined the concept by adding slanted serifs and a varying alignment on all the letter forms giving the typeface a very casual and informal appearance. At about that time, I was reading a book by Jack Kerouac, and was so inspired by his writings on the ‘beat generation’ that I decided to name the font ‘Beatnik’. Afterwards, I added a set of true small capitals and old style figures. I'm currently working on additional weights and variations to expand this ‘hip’ new font series. Groovin' baby.

Of course, the only clue to this typeface is the lettering instruction book at hand. I started with the Bold design first. Then I designed Light, Regular, and Black in that order. The font family Univers is one of the greatest typographic achievements of the second half of the 20th century. The family has the advantage of having a variety of weights and styles, which, even when combined, give an impression of steadiness and homogeneity. Spirited, unaffected and buoyant, the ITC Oldrichium type family pays homage to the calligraphy and typeface designs of Czech designer Oldrich Menhart. “I came upon one of Menhart's typefaces over a decade ago,” says George Thompson, designer of ITC Oldrichium. “I've been collecting examples of his work ever since.” Thompson was born in Chicago and grew up in north-west Indiana. “While I've been an educator and general graphic designer for over 30 years, lettering and type design have always been an important part of my work,” he says. Thompson now spends much of his free time designing typefaces. ITC Oldrichium is a subtle melding of the shapes and proportions of Menhart's Manuscript typeface, the energetic strokes of his calligraphy, and Thompson's own design skills. The result is a distinctive, powerful, and exceptionally versatile typeface family. In the basic version of the typeface, all glyphs have simple chopped shapes, created according to the usual geometric principles. In the alternative version of TT Tunnels, which becomes available when you turn on OpenType feature stylistic alternates or stylistic set 1, the typeface comes to life and turns into a stylized ductal gothic grotesque, in which the design of glyph forms is created based on the pen movements. Despite the fact that TT Tunnels was created as a display typeface for use in short inscriptions and titles, it works very interestingly in the body text, adding a small touch of archaics. This is especially evident in the Bold and Black faces, when the rhythm and thickness of the strokes create a dense set, covering the paper with a solid, dense pattern.
