I live in a small hamlet near the Rhine river. It is a sleepy little town and it doesn’t have any facilities. For groceries I need to go to the next town. The only road leading to that town has been closed for half a year, because of ‘maintenance’, so doing groceries got a lot trickier. The fastest way to travel is through yet another hamlet in the forest, on a very narrow road with extremely bumpy shoulders. Yes, you’ve guessed it: it is a Bumpy Ride. Bumpy Ride was made using a so called Brush Pen. It comes with all the accents and a sweet set of alternates for the lower case letters.

The worn letters represent the decades of war against the computers...or the aliens...or maybe the letters comes from a sign of a computer company from the eighties, which was recently found in an abandoned place. The speculations are many, but one thing is definitely true: Videomax got that grungy / computer / worldwar feeling! Argyle Rough was originally developed for a packaging campaign in the late 80s in my studio and sat around in various stages of completion until I decided to autotrace my original drawings. I liked the quirky roughness and decided that it did not detract from the charm of the original, in fact it improved it and saved me a whole lot of work. The original campaign called for a few additional alternate characters for use at either end and double in the middle of words, ee, ff, ll, ss etc and a stylized Th, always useful. Huckleberry is a revival and expansion of a 1973 typeface called Mark Twain, which was G. Jaeger's reaction to the popularity of VGC's Eightball (also digitized and expanded as Orotund by Canada Type) from across the ocean. Jaeger's reaction was typical German efficacy, with majuscules that surpass their inspiration in art and humour, and minuscules that could have been just the thing if one wanted to make the Eightball lowercase friendlier. The cover of the 1907 sheet music for "I'd Rather Twostep Than Waltz, Bill" was hand lettered in an Art Nouveau sans serif alphabet. During the hippie counter-culture movement of the 1960s, rock posters, album covers and other printed ephemera of the time embraced the styles of lettering and art made popular during the early 1900s. It seemed only fitting to name this type design Nouveau Hippie JNL as an homage to both eras. The font is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The beautiful hand lettering on the sheet music cover for Will R. Anderson's "Good Night Dear" (circa 1908) features quaint, semi-calligraphic lettering in the Art Nouveau Style. The song itself was popularized by Billie Burke [best remembered as the Good Witch in “The Wizard of Oz”] in the musical comedy "Love Watches".

Flirtation Walk JNL was inspired by the lettering on the covers of sheet music for songs taken from the 1934 Dick Powell-Ruby Keeler movie "Flirtation Walk". The typeface features some stylized characters as well as the more familiar Art Deco character designs, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

A 1935 piece of sheet music entitled “(There’s A) Little Picture Playhouse in My Heart” had its movie-themed title hand lettered in a condensed Art Deco style with a few interesting character variations.
