An ad for the annual Variety Club Convention appeared in the March 18, 1940 issue of "The Film Daily. The main headline was hand lettered in a classic Art Deco "solid" style of sans serif - ultra bold and with no counters - but had one additional feature: 'engraved' lines to the left of each character. This has now been expanded into the digital typeface Trade Convention JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. Variety Clubs (now know as Variety - The Children's Charity) was founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1928 by entertainers specifically to aid children. Sheet music from the 1921 edition of the Ziegfeld Follies provided the blueprint for this sparkly, sprightly font. Upper and lowercase characters are identical, with the exception of the letter s, which offers a version of the letter with a big caboose rather than an overbite. Named for David Bowie’s 1972 breakthrough album. Both versions of this font contain the Unicode 1252 (Latin) and Unicode 1250 (Central European) character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Cooper Goodtime is a font based on the lettering used on the CBS-TV variety series The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour (1969-1972). The name pays tribute to its two origins, the other being Cooper Black. It was never an actual complete font set on the TV show, only a limited number of handmade letters, all upper case. It has lain dormant since the show went off the air in 1972. With this incarnation, a set of lower case letters has been created to complement the upper case letters. These lower case letters never existed before now. Cooper Goodtime is a funky, nostalgic, cool way to create a display, and it works surprisingly well in text sizes, too.

Numpty is a word of Scottish origin and means ‘someone who, by speech or action, demonstrates a lack of knowledge’. I use this word quite often (as this world, unfortunately, seems to be full of numpties). And guess what? Now you know what it means, you can use it too! Hooray! Numpty is a fat, rounded display font. A little uneven, a little weird, but with enough panache to make your designs stand out.

The DF Dudok is a minimal bitmap typeface which works very well in small sizes both on your screen and on paper. I am connected in a culinary way with the architects’ name W.M. Dudok. It was the first restaurant where I cooked under the critical eye of my chef Gerhard Braun. (Now La Stanza in Rotterdam) Well, it is incidently getting into my typeface work, the cook, the architect, his wife and...who knows

John Sigvard ‘Ole’ Olsen and Harold Ogden ‘Chic’ Johnson were musicians-turned-comedians who rose to fame in the zany 1938 Broadway musical review “Hellzapoppin'”. They reprised their roles in the 1941 film adaptation of the show, and the opening title card of the film has “Hellzapoppin'” hand lettered in a tall, condensed sans serif design with an inline. This is now available as Wild Comedy JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

The master of the dancing brush, Angel Koziupa, and the node-obsessed perfectionist, Alejandro Paul, offer up another bucket of fun with Malambo. This time Koziupa allows his brush to jitter one whole millimeter, and Paul digitizes with two eyes instead of his usual three. Follow your heart, but consume an ounce of peroxide first. Full of energy and cheeky mischief, Malambo tells the eye amusing stories of mirrorless shaving accidents, wine mistakenly poured over the morning cereal, and someone who trips over his own shadow on the dance floor, yet keeps on dancing. And dancing is what this typeface is all about. Malambo is a traditional Argentine dance performed by the gauchos (the Argentine equivalent of 19th century North American cowboys?). The gauchos are still around in the less than touristic areas of Argentina. And although they dance quite passionately and make the heartiest parrillas, most of them probably don't know what a font is. But you know, and we know. And that's something. Malambo was selected as the Best in show display font at the Biennial Letras Latinas.

Kabouter (kaːˈbɑu̯.tər) means ‘gnome’ in Dutch. I have no particular love for gnomes (even though I have a font called Garden Gnome…), but this font had a fairytale feeling to it and the name looked good. Kabouter is a happy display font. It is fun, bouncy and quirky. Use it for your book covers, toy-packaging and home made apple sauce labels. Besides that, you now know how to say gnome in Dutch, which will leave your friends astounded! ;-)

A photo of the now closed [circa-1953] Lowell Municipal Pool (at 1601 N. 28th St.) in Boise, Idaho shows the words “Municipal Pool” formed into the cement of the entrance to the above-ground swimming facility. Both the lettering and building entrance designs harken back to the Art Deco era and the sign features stencil-like characters. This inspired a typeface aptly named Municipal Pool JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The inspiration for this proto-Art Nouveau typeface showed up in the 1887 type specimen book of Farmer, Little & Co. under the name Vassar. Its bold, sinuous curves, which take unexpected turns now and then, make it the perfect choice when you want to command attention...in a dignified, Ivy League kind of way, of course. All versions of this font include the complete Latin 1252 and CE 1250 character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Cary Grant was one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, playing romantic leads, dramatic parts and showing off his impeccable timing in screwball comedies. A perfect example of this is Frank Capra’s “Arsenic and Old Lace” from 1942. The movie trailer for the film had the title hand lettered in a playful and casual slab serif style, with varying character shapes and weights. This is now available as Screwball Comedy JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

PT Petroglyph™ was designed by Ekaterina Kulagina and licensed by ParaType in 2002. The type was created on the basis of petroglyphs (rock-carvings) that are known in 77 countries. They remained in a form of geometrical drawings in the caves of North Spain and France. Scientists claim that the radial spread-out of circles or center-pointed circles that are usually depicted show the development of solar symbolism at that period of time. We know for sure that such mysterious signs as drawings carved on rocks already existed 40 centuries ago.

My youngest son Boris has his birthday in a week. He turns 8, and he loves to play with those Danish building blocks - you know what I’m talking about. Last year he developed an interest in Star Wars n(no idea how that came to be), so we bought him some Star Wars-themed blocks for his birthday. I am now watching the movies with him and it is fun to witness his enthusiasm. The only drawback is the fact that we now seem to have a Chewbacca in our home… Meowtant Kittens is a font I drew with a fineliner and then digitised. Of course the name was influenced by the movies I am watching with Boris, even though they don’t feature any Meowtant Kittens.

Greyfriars Kirkyard is the graveyard surrounding Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh, Scotland. I needed a rather ‘English’ name for this hand drawn Baskerville, but I ended up with a Scottish one. Greyfriars font was hand drawn with a Japanese brush pen. It is based on Baskerville, a font I really like. The glyphs are a bit rough and jumpy, which adds to Greyfriars’ unique look. Use it for your titling, book covers and product packaging, or stick it in a website and see what happens! Comes with a jolly bundle of diacritics.

A pleasant Art Nouveau hand lettered title is featured on the sheet music cover for "You Brought A New Kind of Love to Me". The song is from the 1930 Paramount film "The Big Pond" featuring Maurice Chevalier and Claudette Colbert. The original lettering was done with a round point pen nib, and showed a lot of small inconsistencies. For the digital version it has been "tightened up" a bit and is now available as Nouveau Fashion JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

A former lettering artist at Hallmark Cards, Rob Leuschke now has his own thriving design businesses, Alphabytes and the new TypeSETit. A period piece is something of or pertaining to a specific era or time. Anything evoking a knowledge or feeling of an era can be labeled as such. The aptly named type font Period Piece JNL reflects the hand lettering found on the cover of early 20th century vintage sheet music entitled "My Baby's Arms" (from the stage production of "Ziegfeld Follies of 1919"). Although strongly akin to the coming Art Deco movement in its lettering style, Period Piece JNL still contains a strong influence of the Art Nouveau era of the 1900s through the 1920s.

Destructive Decisions is a font based upon the inherent flaws of human nature—presented under the guise of complete legibility. At first impression this font is very readable, but upon closer examination you'll notice the edges are fuzzy and some of the lines are off-kilter. You can read it, but it is also a bit foggy. No matter how hard it strives for perfection. This font was originally designed for a cable tv show about substance abuse, but is now available for use in your web and print designs, too.

This is our first font, based on Peter's own personal way of writing uncials, The rounded letters of the fourth to eighth centuries. The characters in the caps position are more closely related to the classical Roman forms, and the lowercase position has letters that are the more rounded, medieval forms, at the same size, so they can be freely mixed, for a hand lettered appearance. This typeface is currently used for the titles in the TNT Television show "the Librarians". It was originally designed in 1998, and is now available in Open Type Format.

Daddy’s Hand is based on the actual handwriting of my dad. He always prided himself on his fine penmanship, and to see him write was kind of like watching a ballroom dance--his pen would smoothly and elegantly waltz across the paper as he wrote, gliding effortlessly. I know if he were alive today he would be quite honored that his handwriting is now a font. Vegetability: “The quality or state of being vegetable”. Yes, I know: it’s kinda weird, but I quite like the name of this font! I am trying to become a vegetarian (I am a ‘flexitarian’ right now) and I was trying to find a good veggie recipe for dinner, when this name crossed my mind. Vegetability is a handwritten font with a dash of roughness, a splash of attitude and a pinch of class. Comes with a whole bunch of diacritics and double letter ligatures for the lower case letters.

Big Brush is the result of me seeing Brush Script everywhere around me. Toronto signage is full of Brush Script. My last two trips to the West Coast showed me mostly Brush Script. Brush Script must be the most widely overused North American script font of all time. Don't we all know at least one restaurant or bar with its sign made in Brush Script? And aren't you just sick of the weird F, Q and T of Brush Script? Well, out with the old and in with the new. Big Brush was made as a replacement for Brush Script, and then some. While Brush Script has only the single familiar letters we all know, Big Brush comes in two fonts, so you can keep the design fresh the neat and keep them guessing at the same time. The next time you want to design something that calls for strong, fast brush calligraphy, do the world's bored eyes a favor and use Big Brush instead.
