Bucintoro is a modern version of the rotunda blackletter, the Gothic book hand of Italy and Spain in the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries. As the name implies, it's more "rotund" than the tall, angular Textur blackletter used in Germany that Gutenberg imitated. While the use of blackletter continued far into the 20th century in Germany and Scandinavia, the rotunda gave way to roman (and later also italic) letterforms in Italy, France, and Spain. It's less well known these days. Bucintoro has upper- and lowercase alphabets, numerals, punctuation, diacritics but lacks such modern characters as currency symbols. Has light, medium, and black weights.

With the famous and much used Eurostile and Bank Gothic in my mind I wanted to design a mono-line font as simple and legible as possible. A square with rounded corners, i.e., the letter ‘o’ as its basis. From there on back to basics, so straights remained simple straights with 90° endings, whatever the angle. Numbers are monospaced. The result seems to be a pleasantly balanced and neutral font. Excellent for display purposes and surprisingly legible in even small sizes. This perhaps typical approach by an architect led to the name of the font: ArchiType.

The "Fou" typeface family was designed as an alternative to "Trade Gothic condensed bold". During the design process of a normally wide font variant a system developed that responds to white space and changing proportions. Thus, round transitions become rectangular and vice versa, space is made and space is taken away. This system and the associated changes are continued on a model with semi-serifs. "Fou" can also be used as an alternative to Din or the wider Q-Type, but in comparison offers more room for emphasis with its italics and condensed styles, expert sets and numerous special characters.

The word Text" in Goudy Text™ is short for Textura, and textura is the style of blackletter or gothic writing developed in Northern Europe in the middle ages. The use of space in blackletter is quite different from what we know about Roman letterforms. Lowercase forms in blackletter writing and typefaces must be evenly textured with black and white elements, like the texture of weaving or fabric. Capital letters can provide either an integration of the even texture (by the use of decoration in their construction) or, if they are wide and open and filled with white, they provide bright spots of visual emphasis. Goudy, despite being an American in the twentieth century, understood well the fundamental texture of medieval blackletter and the importance of both density and light. He designed Goudy Text in 1928 for Lanston Monotype after studying the type in Gutenberg's 42-line bible; still one of the best models for designers of blackletter typefaces. The lowercase of Goudy Text has impact and medieval authenticity. The standard caps have some Victorian eccentricities but are mostly well drawn. The alternate, or "Lombardic" caps are spectacular - they set beautifully with the lowercase letters, providing the proverbial shafts of light through the Gothic cathedral's stained glass windows. A very expanded sans serif font in capital letters inspired by the inscription on a bank note Old bank notes tend to have a very typical typography. Usually they carry decorative and elaborately designed markings. For one thing, they must be practically impossible to forge and for another, they should make a respectable and legitimate impression. And in the days of copper and steel engravings, that meant nothing less than creating ornate, shaded or otherwise complicated scripts. Designing the appropriate script was literally in the hands of the engraver. That’s why I noticed this bank note from 1948. It is the first 20 mark bill in the then newly created currency ”Deutsche Mark.“ All other bank notes of the 1948 series show daintier forms of typography with an obvious tendency toward modern face. The 1949 series which followed shortly thereafter reveals the more complicated script as well. For whatever reason, only this 20 mark bill displays this extremely expanded sans serif variation of the otherwise Roman form applied. This peculiarity led me in the year 2010 to create a complete font from the single word ”Banknote.“ Back to those days in the 40’s, the initial edition of DM bank notes was carried out by a special US-American printer who was under pressure of completing on time and whose engravers not only engraved but also designed. So that’s why the bank notes resemble dollars and don’t even look like European currency. That also explains some of the uniquely designed characters when looked at in detail. Especially the almost serif type form on the letters C, G, S and Z, but also L and T owe their look to the ”American touch.“ The ingoFont Banknote 1948 comprises all characters of the Latin typeface according to ISO 8859 for all European languages including Turkish and Baltic languages. In order to maintain the character of the original, the ”creation“ of lower case letters was waived. This factor doesn’t contribute to legibility, but this kind of type is not intended for long texts anyway; rather, it unfolds its entire attraction when used as a display font, for example on posters. Banknote 1948 is also very suitable for distortion and other alien techniques, without too much harm being done to the characteristic forms. With Banknote 1948 ingoFonts discloses a font like scripts which were used in advertising of the 1940’s and 50’s and were popular around the world. But even today the use of this kind of font can be expedient, especially considering how Banknote 1948, for its time of origin, impresses with amazingly modern detail.

Here's a good old Victorian job printing font. Faithful to the original issued by Barnhart Bros. & Spindler about 1880. Nothing wildly decorative about it, yet it clearly looks old.
