Last Dance: Redux - The 80s Feel-Good Script Font - Updated! Welcome to Last Dance: Redux, a new and improved version of my popular brush-script font inspired by 80s movie posters, VHS covers and Friday nights at the video store! This hand-drawn script aims to capture the feel-good vibes of movie blockbusters that won our teenage imaginations, while serving as the go-to font for recreating this unique and nostalgic period. The original Last Dance font features a gritty, hand-drawn texture that looks equally at home on an aerobics competition poster or steamy urban thriller - making great titles that look distinctly cinematic. Carve is an African font that was inspired by fonts such as Othello and Neuland designed in the mid-1920s. Rather than attempting to re-create these fonts in a digital form as so many others have done, I have tried to capture the “spirit” of the period and emphasize the “woodcarving” style of the font, while simultaneously giving it a contemporary feel. As a result the characters differ markedly any of the original styles and have much less of an “Art Deco” look to them. To further modernize Carve, I have included all the characters required for a full character set (lower case, as well as all punctuation, numerals, diacritics, special characters etc). The result is a thoroughly modern re-interpretation. The numbers (0 to 9) bear no relation to any originals but, I believe, are fully in keeping with the upper and lower alphabetic characters of my font. Carve comes in two styles: --Regular: contemporary, angular African style --Incised: exaggerating the chunky, hand-carved "woodcut" effect. The "in-line" effect has been hand-crafted to avoid the mechanical effect of computer-generated inline effects.

For many years I had repeatedly written names on certificates or designed texts for certificates of honor with a pen. I later digitized a font written with a broad pen from 1988 to make it easier to use. After the technical possibilities for this had developed, I made a PostScript font out of this document font. The "HGB-Unik" is a humanistic antiqua that arose from this written type. In 2009 Unik was chosen as the text font for a book. However, the book designers wanted to have an italic and a bold style as well. The cursive was developed from written texts that I also wrote for various occasions in the 1980s. The resulting font family was thoroughly revised several times until a usable text font with four weights was created. Although the Unik looks very idiosyncratic in display size, it shows a surprisingly balanced, pleasant typeface in read size.

Frontage Condensed is a layered type system inspired by eye-catching and colorful facade signage. Its main aspect is — like many typographic installations on storefronts — three dimensional. The narrow, generously spaced letterforms lend the typeface a bold and eminent voice. The more ornamental layers like Bulb or Neon bring nostalgia to the family, while the Shadow layer maximizes the spacial impression. The system’s ten layers can be used alone or combined making the family a versatile toolkit. Inspired by the strange, blocky lettering on the sides of a set of a set of plastic kitchen containers in my childhood home, 8th Avenue is a sophisticated, somewhat syncopated font with a retro look and feel that at the same time brings a very modern attitude to your design. 8th Avenue works well as display font for packaging, headlines and logos. Those pastel turquoise plastic boxes from the early 1950s, with white screen printed letters reading FLOUR, SUGAR, COFFEE etc. on one side were a simple quiet presence in our home back then and for decades after. Seeing them, even that soft blue-green colour felt like home. SUGAR, the soul survivor of that set has become one of those mundane items of daily life that somehow become simple icons of another time, ripe with memories. Obviously I had to make a font. P22 Graciosa is a five font family based upon designs for a metal type by Carlos Winkow (1882–1952), a German type designer who lived and worked in Spain in the early 20th Century. Graciosa is a sort of hybrid blackletter/text font, with simplified blackletter caps and a serifed lowercase with subtle script flare. There is a Regular, Black, an open version called White, and an engraved version called Gris. The version called Multi serves as a fill font to allow for multi-colored layering options. A revival of these designs was initiated by Matthias Beck in 2015. The character set was expanded for use in 21 languages (OpenType Standard). The digitization and reintroduction of these old fonts—created in Spain and practically forgotten—makes them regain a new life. This project was subsidized by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.

Prince and Princess Charming are very extravagant and extroverted about their feelings. Prince Charming puts a heart on everything. Further inspiration came from the article, "The shape of the heart: I'm all yours". Debs was inspired by a thank you note sent from one of my friends to another. The recipient liked the handwriting so much that he passed the note on to me after having asked permission from Debs, the writer. I enjoyed the vigor and looseness of the handwriting, as well as admiring its legibility and style. Debs has all the characteristics of modern handwriting: It appears loose, unstructured, and free, while maintaining good form and great legibility. Its baseline is varied, creating an impression of notes written by busy people, while its characters remain well formed and readable. An attempt to go back towards the beauty of fine book printing, inspired in Britain's literary classics. Athelas takes full advantage of the typographic silence, that white space in the margins, between the columns, the lines, the words, the lettershapes and finally, within the characters themselves. It is also intended to take advantage of the great advances and technical developments made in offset printing. Athelas shows its best side in finely crafted book editions and good printing conditions. Athelas has a large character set that covers most of the languages that use the Latin script. Although inspired in British literature, this typeface respects the cultural values behind different languages, where diacritic marks have an utterly important role. Athelas features four weights and about 800 characters per weight, including small caps, discretionary ligatures, fractions, a complete range of numerals for every use and a set of ornaments and arrows.

A set of original ornamental symbols was designed by Viktor Kharyk and licensed to ParaType in 2007. The name was inspired by the famous book “Champ Fleury” by Geoffroy Tory (1529) but the theme of blooming meadow was embodied much more literally. Each ornamental motive has a real prototype in flora. Mainly there are plants raising on Ukrainian wooded steppe. Plants were chosen for their Ukrainian and Latin names begin of proper letters from Ukrainian and Latin alphabets. The font is consisted of two styles: Day for normal and Night for reversed that reminds night lighting by its unexpected distribution of black and white areas. Fleurons may be used for creation of ornamental surfaces, composed borders and corners, decoration of any materials, and even as botanical illustrations. Whiteblack is a slab serif with a soft touch, designed for contemporary typography and comes up with 6 weights for positive and negative settings plus handslanted obliques. In dark backgrounds, especially for signage and on screen, negative settings glow and appear heavier than positive settings. To avoid the „glow-effect“ the typeface contains special weights for an optimal balance between white and black. A large x-height and open apertures not only creates space for smaller sizes, but also lends Whiteblack a solid balanced and generous character for print and screen. The name “Bicyclette” was chosen because this typeface is all about balance and elegance. The idea was to create a highly contrasted sans-serif family carefully balanced between gentle curves and sharp angles, with large capitals opposing uncommonly short lower case, through six distinctive weights. The letters are wide, and the capitals pop up in headlines while the lower case leaves a lot of white space between the text lines because of its small x-height. The edges are rounded (but not so much for the family to be called rounded), just enough to make the text feel slightly softer, gentler, while retaining some of that technical sans sharpness. The Bicyclette character set supports Western and Central European languages, and includes an extended set of monetary symbols. It is a cute font that imaged a circle that was popular among young Japanese girls in the 1970s and 1980s, plus elements of the current round character as well. The momentum of the circle fads of the 70s and 80s back then seemed to have been great, and it seems that there were schools that prohibited the use of the round letters as students were all writing, too. In addition, a circular letter contest was held, and it seems that the work selected from many entries was released as a phototype. I tried to round up to the limit while incorporating the elements of that circle and the elements of the round letters that the current Japanese girls would write. It corresponds to Hiragana · Katakana · Alphabet · Numerals · Symbols · Kanji(chinese characters). You can also write vertically. You can use it easily, because it contains JIS first · second level, and IBM extended Kanji(about 6700chinese characters). I think that it is an eye-catching design although it lacks a little on readability, so it is also recommended to use it point-wise. The name "Hachimaru" is a thing that touched "80" in the 1980s. The 80s is one of my favorite times. I think that the power to young girls 'Kawaii' such as circle letters, fancy goods and idols was a very strong era. Trinidad Neue™️ is a geohumanistic typeface developed by the Chilean Type Design Studio Sudaca. The origin of this work lies in an exercise of comparing classic Roman proportions (Trajan Columns) with the capital letter set of Futura by Paul Renner. I wanted to create my own Sans Serif interpretation of classic proportions. I started working with letters A, H, N, O, R and S. When I finished the uppercase set, this exercise transformed itself into a project. I started to develop a set of lowercase letters choosing as direct references Futura and Kabel by Rudolph Koch; always having in mind that the objective was to find a balance between the humanist and the rational or geometric. Here is when this group is formed, giving its name and identity to this family: Paul, Rudolph & Alexis. The result is a typeface with an elegant, modern and versatile aspect. Its seven stylistic sets make Trinidad Neue™️ into a Swiss army knife to compose short and medium texts for editorial design, branding, exhibitions, motion graphics, etc. The family consists of nine weight variants and its corresponding oblique versions. Dederon Serif has been specifically designed for book setting. Preliminary sketches were drawn in 2004. Its inspiration – particularly its weight and width proportions – can be traced to the Liberta typeface from the TypoArt type foundry in former Eastern Germany. After a careful study of the model, the design of Dederon branched off into its own direction, finding its distinctive voice and becoming a wholly original type family. Dederon Serif kept most of the elements typical for the Old Style Roman lettering, such as the angle of the stress, the medium x-height, and lower contrast. In large sizes, the typical shapes of the letters stand out – the calligraphic feel characteristic for the Czech typefaces by Oldrich Menhart, the unusual serifs hinting at the angle of the pen, the shapes of the stems, or the terminals of dots and ears. Upon finishing the serif version, a Serif-serif variant called Dederon Serif was added. The construction principles are also derived from the Old Style Roman model, which lends the lettering its open, humanist feel. Yet the design also conforms to the rules of the modern Serif serif. Most characteristics of Dederon Serif match the serif version – the weight of individual cuts, the width proportions, x-height, ascenders' and descenders' length, and the slope of the italics. Each version of Dederon Open Type Std contains the standard Western Latin character set and the Central European characters; a number of basic and accented ligatures, small caps; old style, small caps and caps, table, fraction and superscript numerals; expert glyphs and alternative characters. This brings the total to a comfortable 820 glyphs per weight, permitting truly professional use in the most demanding projects.

Simplo: the ‘Italian Futura’. Simplo is a geometric sans serif typeface, built in sixteen styles. It is a tribute to the 1930s typeface Semplicità, designed by Nebiolo’s Alessandro Butti. Although many details of Simplo differ from Semplicità, it preserves the spirit of the original. Simplo is ideal for use in display sizes. It is also quite legible in text, and is well suited for graphic design and corporate identity design. Simplo has sixteen styles, extensive language support, eight different kinds of figures, sophisticated OpenType features — so it’s ready for advanced typographic projects. The most notable characteristics of this typeface are the ‘t’ and the ‘f’. The ‘t’ is the culmination of simplicity: a vertical line with just a simple right-side crossbar. The ‘f’ also has just a right-side crossbar, and is really tall: it reaches both the highest and lowest vertical position of the typeface. The top of the distinctive ‘s’, is much narrower than its bottom. The ‘a’, ‘b’, ‘d’, ‘g’, ‘p’, ‘q’, and ‘u’ are spurless, and show a family resemblance with Hans Reichel’s 1990s typeface Dax. However, these letters are rounder and more geometric than Dax’s counterparts, because of Dax’s higher x-height and narrower design. In Paul Shaw’s Imprint article about typefaces that have been overlooked and/or underappreciated, “Overlooked Typefaces”, he concluded his discussion of Semplicità as follows: “These idiosyncrasies suggest that Semplicità might find a warm reception today, given the current love affair with Gotham, Neutraface and Proxima—and the resurgence of ITC Avant-Garde Gothic.” Free demo font available. Who doesn't want or need an expansive contemporary extended sans that has a sense of style and swagger… what if it had a lowercase, small caps and various numeral options… how could you say no? This was the foundational argument I made for myself when I drew the initial alphabet on my birthday last year (something I do each year, draw a new font, kind of a fun OCD thing). I wanted to see a wide, utilitarian sans that had more to it than just a basic character set and didn't resemble standard geometric models. As I continued sketching, the letterforms were being influenced more by my 'lettering tendencies' than the normal mechanical trappings of drawing flat, wide letters. The letters have retained aspects of letters created by hand — stresses, modulation, naturally ending terminals. Truncation and quick clipping of strokes became antithetical to the letterforms I drew, so I continued this once I brought the design into the computer. I kept it precise and dependable, but made every attempt to keep a conscientiously crafted typeface and not let it devolve into a grid-based drone. As such, it works just as well looking back in time as much as it does assuming a lead role in a sci-fi movie. Halogen does deliver and opts not to take a short cut and provide an anemic offering of glyphs — a modern typeface offered today must provide more than just the basics and this one does — lowercase, smallcaps, old style numerals, tabular forms, stylistic and titling alternates, fractions, case-sensitive features, and even an alternate uppercase ordinal set is included. So go make cool print and digital things with it, now.

Iza W and Intellecta Design are proud to announce Invitation Script, a modern and clean revival of the classic work of the Portuguese master penman Manuel de Andrade de Figueiredo, whose work can be seen in “Nova Escola para aprender a ler, escrever, e contar (...)'' (1722). Invitation Script is the third script superfamily published by Intellecta Design, after Penabico and Van den Velde Script. Invitation Script has original letters designed by Iza W. Creative direction and core programming were provided by Paulo W. Chyrllene K assisted with some work on unusual and archaic styles, resulting in a special font - Invitation Script Archaic (soon available). Invitation started out from Andrade’s script style and evolved into a voluptuous script font family. The result is a typeface ideal for beautiful headings, signatures, art work typography, titles and short pieces of hand-lettered text. Invitation family includes two multi-table Opentype fonts, three supplementary fonts for ornaments and fleurons, and the Archaic font with some of the Andrade’s original characters. Embedded in the regular fonts are additional sets of letters. Over 40 variations are available for certain letters via the Special Sets Opentype table. The two regular versions of Invitation Script contains the following: (i) An extensive set of ligatures providing letterform variations that make eye-popping designs or simulate real handwriting. These are accessible via contextual alternates and other open-type features.
