Trade Gothic Next is Akira Kobayashi's 2008 revision of Jackson Burke's 1948 design. Developed over many years, the original Trade Gothic was filled with many inconsistencies. Under the direction of Akira Kobayashi, Linotype's Type Director, the american type designer Tom Grace, a graduate of the MA Typeface Design in Reading, was commissioned to redesign, revise, and expand the Trade Gothic family. Kobayashi and Grace refined many details such as the terminals and stroke endings, symbols, and the spacing and kerning. Moreover, there are newly added compressed widths and heavy weights perfect for setting even more powerful headlines. The Regular weight has been beefed up making it stronger and more robust in text settings. Lectio is a Roman font based on a Venetian Renaissance early typefaces, but with a modern and expressive design. His obvious calligraphic influence favors continuous text reading. Yana Klink is an illustrator at Art. Lebedev Studio, whose works are often accompanied by lines of fancy text written in her own recognizable manner with long strokes and “beauty spots.” Once we needed to apply that style to a number of pieces of text, we decided to design a decorative script called Klinkopis. It comes in one weight (regular). Text set in Klinkopis looks best when arranged in waves, like the original. It is recommended to use large sizes—from 24 pt and up—and have no more than just a couple of lines that become an essential part of the artwork. Klinkopis is designed to use OpenType Contextual Alternates. To beautify your project even further, some characters can be manually replaced with their more intricate or plainer variations depending on the neighboring letters. Klinkopis features long descenders and ascenders, which requires large leading to avoid congestion.

Inspired by the strange, blocky lettering on the sides of a set of a set of plastic kitchen containers in my childhood home, 8th Avenue is a sophisticated, somewhat syncopated font with a retro look and feel that at the same time brings a very modern attitude to your design. 8th Avenue works well as display font for packaging, headlines and logos. Those pastel turquoise plastic boxes from the early 1950s, with white screen printed letters reading FLOUR, SUGAR, COFFEE etc. on one side were a simple quiet presence in our home back then and for decades after. Seeing them, even that soft blue-green colour felt like home. SUGAR, the soul survivor of that set has become one of those mundane items of daily life that somehow become simple icons of another time, ripe with memories. Obviously I had to make a font. When I released Halogen, I asked ‘Who doesn't want or need an expansive contemporary extended sans that has a sense of style and swagger… what if it had a lowercase, small caps and various numeral options… how could you say no?’ Go, click on the Halogen link and read on, if you're interested. Halogen was well-received, so I decided to take it further with Halogen Flare (the name kinda tips you off as to what kind of typeface it is, don't ya think?). As always, I prefer not to take short cuts and provide an anemic offering of glyphs — a modern typeface offered today must provide more than just the basics and this one does — lowercase, smallcaps, old style numerals, tabular forms, stylistic and titling alternates, fractions, case-sensitive features, and even an alternate uppercase ordinal set is included. Now, go make cool print and digital things with it.
