A circa-1920s book on lettering entitled "Book of Alphabets" by Regan Publishing displayed an example of a Grotesk typeface (a popular style of sans serif of the time). This design was re-drawn digitally as Not So Grotesk JNL and is available in four varieties - regular, oblique, condensed and condensed oblique. Not So Grotesk JNL is the perfect companion font family to use alongside Simply Grotesk JNL.

Linotype Rory oblique is part of the Take Type Library, selected from contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. The font was designed by Canadian Tad Biernot with strictly constructed forms. The similarly formed figures seem mechanically created and their light slant gives the impression of strenght and dynamism. Linotype Rory oblique should only be used in the shorter texts of headlines in larger point sizes.

The vikings searched in vain for hundreds of years over much of the northern hemisphere, but their dreams of writing with felt-tip pens went unfulfilled--until now! This is a novelty font containing the 24 runes of the Futhark, but with a modern bent. In addition to regular, bold, oblique, and bold oblique, we have included two outline styles. Although the early 1900s through the 1920s seemed to be the "Golden Age" of ridiculously long novelty song titles, it appears that even the decade of the 1940s had its fair share as well. Song Merchant JNL was modeled from the hand lettered [but exhausting] title of the sheet music for "Princess Poo-Poo-Ly Has Plenty Pa-Pa-Ya (and she Loves to Give it Away)". Despite the obvious double-entendre inferences of the title, the square block letters with rounded corners make for a useful headline font (even if the source material it was drawn from is quite forgettable). Available in regular and oblique versions.

My intent in designing Young Gallant was to create as simple and elegant a formal script as possible. It was developed to illustrate my new book Learning Curves discussing the essence of formal script.

The basis for Series A Signage JNL is Highway Gothic; a type style design formally known as the FHWA Series. The font was developed by the United States Federal Highway Administration, and originally consisted of only capital letters and figures. Each Letter designation represented a character width from "A" (condensed) to "F" (wide). Due to poor visibility at high speeds, Series "A" was discontinued. At one point lower case characters were added to the various widths of the design, but this typeface revival is based on the original guidelines specified in the 1948 (reprinted 1952) book "Standard Alphabets for Highway Signs" [this was the original name for the FHWA series fonts preceding the eventual name change to Highway Gothic]. Unlike the original, Series A Signage JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Buddy is the new companion sans for Contenu, the book font family designed for my book on font design design. Originally, I called it Compagnon, but that seemed to pompous. Then I called it Aide, but that was too formal and dry. It's a loose, free, easy to read sans, so when my wife suggested Buddy, it clicked. This is the 4-font Buddy family of Regular, Italic, Bold, & Bold Italic. I made a new, more limited feature set for these fonts due to their designed usage, but there are still small caps, small cap figures, oldstyle figures, numerators, and denominators. The bold is closer to a black, and the italics are only slightly slanted obliques. If you need a strong black in caps, use the small caps of the bold.
