Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar had an exotic name for a historic Texan, but he left his mark beginning in 1836, the year of Texas independence and the first year that pioneers other than mountain men made their way West. Lamar went on to become the young republic’s first elected vice-president (to President Houston) and second president -- and to author a number of interesting letters in his elegant, stylish hand. (Mirabeau B. Lamar grew up a well-to-do southerner from Georgia, and his penmanship shows it.) One of the most interesting aspects of designing old handwriting fonts, to me, is pausing to reflect on the actual moment that the letter-writer is sitting at his or her desk or table, pen in hand, putting thoughts to words -- 150 to 200 years ago. This dream has come true with the technical support of Karayel's school friend Sabahattin Kayış, a graduate of the Istanbul School of Applied Fine Arts (Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts). The famous Irish poet and novelist Jonathan Swift (Dublin 1667-1745) has a large personal library of which he noticed carefully the book list by himself. We have used a facsimile from this catalogue to reconstruct this present font, as one example of the poet’s personal hands but also as a typical example of the British quill pen handwriting from about mid 1600’s to the beginning of 1700’s . It is a “Pro” font containing Western (including Celtic) and Northern European, Icelandic, Baltic, Eastern, Central European and Turquish diacritics. The numerous alternates and ligatures allow to made the font looking as closely as possible to the real hand. Geronimo is a rough poster script done in the spirit of brush calligraphy experiments conducted by American calligrapher and historian, Professor Alexander Nesbitt. This particular approach to brush script uses a pointed brush. Although Nesbitt considered the pointed brush corruptive and not at all suited to present day western letter forms, he put forth that with enough control of the brush (keeping it upright, maintaining stroke evenness, etc) even an unexperienced letterer can easily draw current day letters, though the result will always show characteristics of the letterer's own handwriting. Geronimo is a great choice for entertainment design, like book covers, film poster and packaging, and CD inserts. It also is a great overall display design for anything that seeks to depict adventure or an environment with a rough human element. Many alternates are sprinkled throughout the font.

German designer Rosemarie Kloos-Rau created Wiesbaden Swing in 1992 for Linotype. This light, informal typeface is based on her own handwriting, and the strokes have a feeling of spontaneity and energetic flair. 1913 Typewriter Carbon is the bold version of GLC foundry's 1913 Typewriter. It is available in two styles: Normal, and Underlined (Bold). It is a complete alphabetic font. It is used as variously as web-site titles, posters design or books editing. It may be preferable, if possible, when printing, to choose a pale color - dark grey instead of heavy black, for exemple - to give a good appearance, just like the real one, and still benefit from the full details.
