Being a lefty makes it challenging to write in cursive. Unlike righthanders who pull the pencil across the page, lefties must push the pencil as they write. As a result, the letterforms created by pushing instead of pulling the implement are different from each other. The lefty’s cursive script is seen here in Yellabelly, the fontified version of Chank Diesel’s left-handed handwriting. This one’s named after a cowardly cowboy.

This is Kimberly Gesweins own handwriting, named for a sweet California friend of hers. The dearJoe series of fonts had it’s origin somewhere around 1999, the year I created dearJoe 1, which was a first (and half-assed) attempt at converting my own handwriting into a working font. Being able to type in my own handwriting had always been a childhood fantasy, and even though I only partly understood the software, a working font was generated and I decided to put it on the internet for people to use. And that’s what they did: at this moment the dearJoe 1 font has been downloaded millions of times and can be found on just about anything, ranging from Vietnamese riksjas, a Tasmanian gym to a fancy chocolate store on 5th Avenue. The font is not something I am particularly proud of, but it started me of in building what later became the JOEBOB graphics font foundry. Inbetween creating other fonts, the dearJoe series has become a theme I revisit every once in a while, trying to create an update on how my handwriting evolved, along with my abilities in creating fonts that mimic actual handwriting. In the last decade or so I started implementing ligatures and alternate characters, which helped a lot in making something that can almost pass for actual handwriting.

P22 Civilite is a historic font revival. The font is a non-connecting upright handwriting script based on 16th century sources with a lineage going back to Robert Granjon in France and from early Dutch type specimens from the Enschede and Sons Foundry. Jugendstil Kunsthand is based on a sample of late 19th century lettering in a style often associated with artists of the Jugendstil Art Nouveau movement in Germany. The characters are done in heavy outline with a rough-hand drawn look. The style is interesting because it shows the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement on Art Nouveau with many of the characters featuring alternate versions that nest together in a manner typical of Arts & Crafts lettering.

Tshikona is casual and vigorous font with a taste of African spice. Although creating an impression of handwritten informality, Tshikona is a carefully crafted font, making it easy to use in any display setting, either for headings or as an informal body font. The line of the letters is reminiscent of the angular, dry branches of trees in the African veldt.
