In 1913, Leipzig-based foundry C. F. Ruehl released a hot-metal font called Caesar-Schrift which was cut by the engraver and medalist Georg Schiller (1858-1937). Now revived as Caesar Pro, this font was carefully extended and made multilingual.

Combustible is a hot, handwritten script font. I don’t really know why I named it Combustible - maybe because I scribbled this one down with near frozen hands. In the history of 20th century graphic arts, the evolution of the informal sans serif has been a uniquely American phenomenon. The ongoing saga of this (still as popular as ever) sub-genre dates back to the maturity of the Industrial Age and early Hollywood film titling, runs through the prosperous times of interwar print publications, sees mass flourishing during the various media propagations of the film type era, and solidifies itself as arguably the most common design element in the latter years of the century. Fun, bouncy, playful, and highly exciting, the casual sans serif is now all over game packaging, film and animation titles, book covers, food boxes, concert posters, and pretty much everywhere design aims to induce excitement about a product or an event. The casual sans is the natural high pill of typesetting. We figured it was high time for the casual sans to adapt to 21st century technology, gain more versatility, and become as much fun to use as the emotions it triggers. So we’re quite excited to issue Bananas, a fun sans serif family in 6 weights and 3 widths that can be used anywhere your designer’s imagination can take you. Rather than being based on a single design, Bananas was sourced from multiple American film era faces, all from 1950s and 1960s, when the casual sans genre was at its popular peak. Headliners’ Catalina and its very similar cousin, Letter Graphics’ Carmel, served as initial study points. Then a few Dave West designs informed the design development and weighting process, before narrow and wide takes were sketched out and included in the family. The entire development process happened in a highly precise interpolative environment. All Bananas fonts come with a full glyph complement supporting the majority of Latin languages, as well as five sets of figures, automatic fractions, quite a few ligatures, biform/unicase shapes and other stylistic alternates.

Will Carter, well known in connection with his private press in Cambridge, has combined the skills of a calligrapher with a practical knowledge of printing. His mastery of pen-drawn letterforms was put to practical use in the design of Klang. Klang is a slightly inclined and calligraphically shaped sans serif with short ascenders and descenders. FA Berlewi is inspired by stencil lettering of a vanguard creator, Henryk Berlewi, who was a precursor of contemporary typography, a painter and a creator of the mechano-facture (Mechano-Faktura) theory. In 1924 he designed a poster for his mechano-facture one-man show in Warsaw Austro-Daimler car salon. An attention-grabbing composition with stencil lettering was doubtless a real innovation and according to Berlewi - the first typographic poster to be made in Poland.

Kanna Aoki had fairy tales in mind when she designed MVB Greymantle. She drew dots with a felt pen to build up the forms, giving them their particular rough character. Is a recreational typography. Created from experimentation of the Slab Serif style with asymmetric lines. Bock is compact and stable, although having the quality of breaking the typographic rhythm, to benefit its use in short words as logotypes and lowering of text in editorials and publicity. The Fat variable was devised as an extension of the Bock concept, deleting the inner and outer space that surrounds a letter, creating a font with much weight and attitude.

Enzia is a friendly and flowing sans serif. Enzia exists somewhere between a slab serif and a semi-sans, and features flared vertical stems and rounded terminals. Its bulbous terminals and open counters inject a flavor of ease and excitement. Enzia provides plenty of impact and is best used with short to medium length texts. Six different weights provide plenty of versatility and contrast for poster designs, logotypes and headlines, while still retaining excellent legibility for extended copy.

Malibu was designed for ITC by Alan Meeks in 1992 and is a font with distinctive calligraphic roots. Pronounced stroke contrast and a marked leaning to the right give the font its energetic, lively image. The letters look almost as though cut from paper, their outer contours angular and pointed against a background. Flowing and demure, Malibu works well for both short texts and headlines. For best results, the lower case letters should be set close together.

Tomate started in 2006 as a brush lettering exercise for a poster and was later used for the ReType identity. In 2008 its author decided to turn it into a super fat typeface suitable for packaging and mass consumption products. The possibilities of ultra heavy forms are explored in this alphabet; trying to solve the design problems that these sort of forms present. Tomate shows influences from the beautiful Goudy Heavyface Italic which is a design the author admires.

Jugendstil Kunsthand is based on a sample of late 19th century lettering in a style often associated with artists of the Jugendstil Art Nouveau movement in Germany. The characters are done in heavy outline with a rough-hand drawn look. The style is interesting because it shows the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement on Art Nouveau with many of the characters featuring alternate versions that nest together in a manner typical of Arts & Crafts lettering.

Brewery Factory This is a vintage font collection inspired by old brewery, pubs, bars and the style of their design. This collection includes 16 font styles - Serif and Script has a regular, rough, vintage, halftone style, as well as a regular and rough style for Serif and Script there are shadows in two versions - short and long. La Portenia pays homage to the spirit of early 20th-century show card writers and type designers. This face has two variations: La Portenia de Recoleta is slightly more formal and polite, while La Portenia de la Boca has longer, more extravagant flourishes and indulges in more interletter space. This showier variant is reminiscent of signs found in Buenos Aires. Both have been designed by Diego Giaccone and Angel Koziupa, and engineered and expanded by Alejandro Paul.
