Reo is a novel two layered, display font with a decidedly retro look and feel, inspired by the toothy grins of 1930�s and 40�s era truck grilles and the gleaming, streamlined efficiency of the automat. Reo Front (Foreground) is where all the detail resides, and Reo Back provides a background layer.

VTC Bloke is a revival of Miller & Richard’s classic metal typeface, ‘Egyptian Expanded’, including the three-dimensional, ‘Open’ style that was later introduced to the family. The roots of this typeface stem from the UK, where William Miller and his son-in-law Richard had their initial foundry in Edinburgh, Scotland. In addition to the beautiful and timeless type designs, the foundry gained a reputation for offering super small type sizes, designed for Bibles, dictionaries, documents, etc. Slab Serifs (or Egyptian Serifs) started to gain popularity in the early 19th century. It’s around this time, due to emerging industrial technologies, and an ever-expanding advertising industry, that type designers started to really experiment with letterforms that could help their clients distinguish themselves from the competitor, and catch people's eyes. The size of posters and advertising space was getting bigger, and bigger, and so was the type. The new digital font version has been re drawn, by Monotype's Ron Carpenter, free from any restrictions imposed by hot metal technology. The A.B. Dick Company was a manufacturer of mimeograph duplicating machines which produced copies by the process of transferring ink through an etched wax stencil onto paper. Customers had the option of purchasing various size and style lettering guides in order to create eye-catching headlines or announcements on their print projects. One such guide called ‘Modern Display’ featured a lettering style resembling Futura Black with added serifs. This is now available as Template Moderne JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Freehouse is a reinterpretation of the well-remembered Watney’s logo, a brewery and pub chain infamous for its poor quality beer and brutalist decor. In Design Research Unit’s corporate guidelines from 1966 the font is described as Clarendon Bold Expanded — however, this is not the case. Clarendon has square serifs, whereas the Watney’s font is rounder and friendlier. A fixture of the British high street landscape for decades, this digitisation adds a full international character set, numbers, punctuation and many other characters that did not exist in the original. A distressed version that evokes rough print on a wet beermat has also been developed.

Griffo Classico™ was produced by Franko Luin in 1993. It is a revival inspired by the types cut by Francesco Griffo for the Venetian printer Aldus Manutius at the end of the fifteenth century. The roman is based on the type Griffo cut in 1496 for Bembo's de Aetna," and the italic on a type he cut in 1501 for an edition of Virgil. Griffo did not make separate italic caps, so Luin designed his own for Griffo Classico. This is a serviceable family with five weights, including small caps.

The Stenso Lettering Company of Baltimore, Maryland pioneered easy-to-use and inexpensive lettering devices with guide holes for accurate spacing. Originally designed by a school teacher (Ruth Libauer Hormats) around 1940, the company was family run until it was sold in 1962 to Ottenheimer Publishers. They in turn sold the line to the Dennison Manufacturing Company, and it was discontinued in the 1980s after Dennison merged with Avery.

A heavy-set but lively font, Kendrick’s dense strokes were hand-painted using a thick wet brush. This all-caps set of letters is bold but brushy, textured and expressive; fun but very much meaning business. Kendrick is streetwise and no-nonsense, but with a big cheesy grin to boot.
