Genovaite Baroniene is former school teacher and a native of Lithuania who loves fancy letters. When she writes, she likes to add extra flourishes to her handwriting and printing. It simply appeals to her to do so. While living in the United States a few years ago and working in the health care field, she put pen to paper to provide a specimen of her writing from which a font could be developed. The process has taken longer than either of us expected. Now we are finally able to present Baroniene ML, a stylishly unique example of what we call Lithuanian Folk Baroque. Baroniene ML has a total of 362 glyphs, including the Unicode Latin Extended-A glyphs (0100 to 017F), covering the more widely-used Central European languages. To resolve the cedilla/undercomma conundrum, we have chosen to design a hybrid disconnected accent for use with C, G, K, L, N, R, S & T. We hope this solution is acceptable to users of Albanian, Catalan, French, Latvian, Portuguese, Romanian and Turkish. Baroniene ML also comes with four ligatures: gh, Th, th and Ch (167, 172, 177 and 181). Baroniene ML is certainly not the polished script of a professional calligrapher. It is very personal. The human source is still visible in its form. The letter spacing is uneven. Some of the curves are not quite perfect. In sum, the individuality has not been refined out of it. That is why it is so charming. If you want for a font that has a very different look, perhaps Baroniene ML is what you need.

From the beginning “Esmeralda” was born with a strong influence of the classical “capitalis monumentalis”, carved in stone. In the same way, the origin of this majuscule writing emerged from the brush, from a way of writing made merely by hand. For this reason, these two universes were intended to lie beneath the shape of each letter, redefining them. And this combination of styles should also be reflected in a lower case set that also allows to open up the spectrum of usage possibilities. Foundational calligraphy represented a solid base for the development of lower case glyphs, ensuring proper interaction with the upper case letters. “Esmeralda” features a great number of ligatures that mix classic structures with a more contemporary impression. With more than eleven hundred glyphs, it provides a multiplicity of uses across a wide combinatory of ligatures, alternative signs, initial caps, miscellaneous and connectors; each one of them accessible through Open Type. “Esmeralda” is perfect to speak with a classical yet fresh, modern – and a little bit bold – tone of voice. Designed by Guille Vizzari, together with the tough and remarkable work of Ale Paul, in use “Esmeralda” stands out in a subtle and unexpected way that’s almost unnoticeable. Its delicate yet solid curves, serifs and endings give each composition a fine, elegant and exquisite feeling, along with a firm and sturdy look. “Esmeralda” was initially born as a typographic project developed by Guillermo Vizzari – tutored by Ale Paul and Ana Sanfelippo – under completion of the Specialization in Typography Design at University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, during the years 2011 and 2012.

A humanistic sans serif The first version of this font was created in 1994 within the framework of the bid placed by the city of Graz to become the location for the Winter Olympics in 2006. Appropriately, its original name was ”Olympia.“ The font is intended to embody classic ideals as well as to meet modern demands. The proportions of Charpentier Sans are directly derived from Roman capitals and the humanistic book-face. The contrast between strokes and thin strokes is based on medieval uncial script. And thus, a modern serif sans was created emphasizing thick and thin strokes together. Thanks to its traditional form language, Charpentier Sans is very legible, adapts to various forms of content and expresses a kind of calmness and certainty. Details resulting from writing with the quill guarantee that the font doesn’t appear too rough and unemotional. Even the tiny, pointed mini serifs contribute to the unmistakable appearance of the font. They create an exciting contrast to the soft flowing forms of the letters and are, to a great extent, conducive to the legibility. Consequently Charpentier Sans always appears with an extremely sharp and clear outline. Charpentier Sans Italique has an even more distinct ductus derived from writing. Especially the rounded forms from a, e, f, g and y reflect the handwritten humanistic cursive. Charpentier Sans is comprised of many ligatures, including discretional ones, plus proportional medieval and capital figures for the normal type as well as disproportional tabular figures with a consistent width. Above and beyond the ”normal“ Latin typeface system, small caps are available as an especially elegant form of distinction.

From the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, by way of Toronto, comes Martie's handwriting. Martie Byrd is a school teacher in Roanoke, Virginia, and a friend of Canada Type's Rebecca Alaccari. After years of admiring the cheer and clarity of Martie's handwriting, we asked her to write out full alphabets for some cool font treatment. The intent was to do three different versions of her writing in two different pens, then use the auto-magic of OpenType to determine letter sequences and rotate character sets on the fly when the fonts are in use. A successful endeavor it was. Take a look at the images in the MyFonts gallery to see the character rotation in action, along with a visual explanation of why Martie is not just another handwriting font. Unlike other available felt tip and ballpoint handwriting fonts, the regular and bold variations are style-based, not weight-based. They are the handwritten expressions of two different Sharpie pens: The fine point one (Martie Bold), and the ultrafine one (Martie Regular). The style-based variation considerably helps the realism needed in design pieces that take advantage of the contrast of two different handwriting fonts. Weight thickening in handwriting is an obvious mechanical effect that only happens with computers. Weight changing by replacing pens is what happens in the real world. Dvarlin Staves is a collection of 512 rune glyph's divided into six font family's. Nosegrind is a bit of a departure from our usual more traditional font offerings. It's based on skate-culture graffiti gleaned from various samples of similar style found on walls in Austin and online. The font includes two character sets, one which is plain and one which is enhanced with outlines. In normal usage the characters should nest, with slight overlap from one character to the next as shown in the sample to the right, but the lower case characters in the font are spaced evenly but not pre-nested, leaving the degree of overlap up to the user - nesting is easily adjusted with the tracking option in programs like Photoshop, Quark or InDesign. Ultimately Nosegrind will be added to our Modern Fonts collection, where it ought to fit in nicely.

Experimental and accidental unicase grotesque. A font in which all the letters and numbers fell down and deformed under the force of gravity. Everything that was hanging fell down. Everything that was curved horizontally straightened. The form and principle of construction of each symbol in the font is dictated not by tradition, but by physics. This makes FE Planking 2020 an excellent tool for creating phrases and statements in advertising and art projects that attract attention and make your head spin. The first free version with a minimum set of Latin and Cyrillic alphabets was released in 2019, and in 2020 the font was updated and supplemented with an expanded set of characters. Peter Kin-Fan Lo designed the award winning Linotype Ancient Chinese™ in 1997. It is a symbol font that contains 92 “portraits” of figures who look as if they could have populated ancient China. These portraits are black and white symbols, gathered together into a font. This symbol font may be used for any design piece dealing with history, China, Chinese restaurants, or Asian art. To clearly see all the details, these symbols should be used at larger point sizes.

Retail Script was designed by Vince Whitlock in 1987. It is a font with strong, dynamic base forms and very small ascenders and descenders, which makes a closed, solid overall image. The fine white lines which are traced within the figures make the font a bit more cheerful and the shading makes the figures look three dimensional. The energetic Retail Script is best used in headlines in larger point sizes in order to preserve the look of its fine details.

Amongst some pages scanned and posted online of old wood type alphabets comes this lovely, ornamental design in a reversed style of white lettering on black rectangular boxes. This classic set of wood type is now available digitally as Wood Fancy Reverse JNL. There is a narrow blank box on the “less than” key for use as an end cap, and a wider blank box on the “greater than” key to use between words as a blank space if so desired.

The wealth of vintage hand-lettering styles found in a 1941 edition of the Speedball® Lettering Pen instruction book has allowed Jeff Levine to re-draw a number of them in digital format for today's designers. As with other fonts in the Eckhardt Series of sign painter-inspired styles, this font is named in honor of Jeff's good friend Albert Eckhardt, Jr. Al was quite the talented sign writer, and ran Allied Signs in Miami, Florida from 1959 until his passing.

Hyldemoer (in Nordic folklore) is a tree spirit, or nymph, who lives in elder trees. H.C. Andersen also wrote a story about Hyldemoer (‘The Little Elder-Tree Mother’ in English). Hyldemoer font is based on my Mysterious font and the first letters of the Beowulf manuscript (Hwæt! We Gardena…). Hyldemoer is a jumpy fairytale font, which comes with some interesting alternate glyphs and ligatures, plus a harvest of diacritics. Use it for your book covers, product packaging, posters and art work.

The Artful Dodger is a character in Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. Dickens wrote his books in the Victorian Era, which also gave birth to a beautiful and extensively used typeface called Clarendon. The typeface was developed by Robert Besley and first published in 1845. Artful Dodger was modeled on the glyphs found in a 1865 book, which was typeset in Clarendon. Artful Dodger has not been 'cleaned', so the glyphs look rough and worn, just like the book I found them in.

When this font slips on a pair of ordinary, over-the-counter spectacles, applies a little hair gel and straightens its red, white and blue tie, it disappears amongst common mortals like you and I... But when danger raises its ugly head, when Truthiness, Justice and the American Way are threatened, MildMannered abandons its secret identity, rips open its shirt and takes to the skies to fight evil... ... and, of course, to help sell colorful paper plates, halloween costumes and happy meals.

Based on the handwriting of the eminent Dutch typographer Alexander Verberne, Julius de Goede's Xander typeface manages to be both sophisticated and whimsical. Alf Becker was a talented sign writer and a prolific contributor of unique alphabets to Signs of the Times magazine. More than one hundred of his designs were showcased in monthly installments with each new issue of the publication. One in particular is a casual, free form sans serif design which has been recreated digitally as Casual Signage JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions. Thanks to Tod Swormstedt of ST Publications for providing the reference material for this font.

Rebnick is a sans serif typeface where in the early design process, the adjacent stems and bars weren’t weld seamlessly and perfectly. You can actually find glitches which were carefully transformed into a custom language in it’s own and later became the coherent generic rule that keeps everything together. In display sizes, the ink traps give the font’s own character, while in small text sizes they create a good legibility and a well-balanced ratio between the black and white spaces.

In a career spanning the early 1900s through 1940, George M. Cohan wrote and produced over 50 plays, 300 songs and was also an actor, singer and dancer. Many of his works honored his Irish roots, and the cover of one piece of sheet music called “The Irish American” (1905) had its title hand lettered in a condensed Art Nouveau type design with tiny spurred serifs. This is now available digitally as Dress Rehearsal JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

This set of initial decorated letters was inspired by a font in use in the beginning of 1500s in Paris. Exactly, we have used the set that Barthélémy Verand employed for the printing of Triumphus translatez de langage Tuscan en François, (from “Triumph” of Petrarque) in the year 1514. Some letters, lacked, have been reconstructed to propose a complete alphabet. It appears that the printer used some letters to replace others, as V, turned over to make a A, or D to make a Q. The original font’s letters were drawn in white on a black background only, but it was tempting to propose a negative version in black on white. It is used as variously as web-site titles, posters and flyers design, publishing texts looking like ancient ones, or greeting cards, all various sorts of presentations, as a very decorative, elegant and luxurious additional font. This font supports strong enlargements remaining very smart and fine. It’s original medieval hight is about one inch equivalent to about four lines of characters. This font may be used with all blackletter fonts, but works particularly well with 1543 Humane Jenson, 1557 Italic and 1742 Civilite, without any anachronism.

UTOPIAN is a color font family based on primary colors and pure geometric shapes, influenced by Bauhaus, DeStijl and Art Deco. Volgarie is a modern serif font that gives a unique touch to any design you create! This font has small lines or flourishes at the end of the strokes that make up letters and symbols, with various alternates and ligatures in each character, while display fonts are intended to be used in larger sizes for headlines, titles, and other attention-grabbing elements. I really like creating script fonts. Why, I hear you say? Well, creating script fonts lets me be me. I am not trying to create classy, connected fonts for you to write love letters with: there are already too many of those available and quite frankly, I just don't like them. I prefer the messy script fonts - uneven, no real baseline and with a bit of splatter or rough edges for good measure. Daft script is one of these messy script fonts: it was handmade and it comes with two alternates for the lower case glyphs that cycle as you type. This is an all-caps font, so that means you have 4 options per letter! I also love languages (I speak 6), so Daft Script comes with fantastic language support, including Vietnamese and Sami.
