Coop Blackletter's core concept was to create a more friendly blackletter typeface by pulling together two very different sources of inspiration. The design is a synthesis of the rounded, affable features and heavier weight of Cooper Black with the underlying composition and calligraphic contrast of a Fraktur. It's kinda chunky, soft around the edges, and not entirely unreadable.

In 1938 the Frankfurt-based foundry Ludwig & Mayer released Eugen Weiss’ beautiful fraktur ‚Hoelderlin‘. Carefully redrawn and redesigned, this digitized version is intended to add another gem to the enthusiasts’ treasure drove of blackletter types. The font contains the historical long s which can be reached by the OpenType feature historical forms or by typing the integral sign [ ∫ ].

Wayland (Vølund or Völundr) is the mythical blacksmith from Norse mythology. I chose this name, because Wayland is a bulky, sturdy display font. Wayland can be used for many types of design, but headlines, posters and book covers spring to mind. Comes with extensive language support.

Garvo is based on old Hollywood movie posters, vintage film credit designs and pays homage to Herb Lubalin's Serif Gothic font & lettering. This is why Garvo is named after the acclaimed international actress Greta Garbo. The Garvo family comes in 6 weights (from Thin to Black) and includes 2 different subfamilies: Garvo and Garvo Poster. Garvo is perfect for short readable texts, such as advertising and packaging designs, while Garvo Poster brings a wide range of contextual alternatives which makes it perfect for high impact pieces. Both styles increase the overall family flavor with discretionary ligatures, small caps figures. The 12 styles of Garvo are perfectly well suited for branding projects, album covers, audiovisual related designs, magazines and layouts, among other uses.

Earlier this year, my eyes fell upon a discarded wedding invitation on the sidewalk. A closer look at it revealed that it had at one point been victimized by rain. Some of the fancy script letters were not quite broken, but sort of melted and run-down, while the rest were still somewhat intact. That's how Scroll was conceived, as an idea for a script where thicks and thins blend to produce a wet appearance. Unlike most available broken scripts, the Scroll script was originally drawn in its own juiced context, and not based on any existing script. This font is great for atmospheric antiquity, deep natural poetry, still life captioning, gothic music posters and collateral, or horror literature and poetry covers.

ITC Coventry is the work of American designer Brian Sooy. ITC Coventry is what type would look like if you left a gothic font out in the rain. IF you look close, you'll see the roots of a handsome sans serif font buried under a layer of grime and rust, basically." The low-budget student flyers that Sooy saw in the Coventry section of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, inspired him to design this font and the result is a typeface which looks as though it has been faxed or photocopied many times. "While it looks very irregular in text, it's very carefully spaced to give that effect," says Sooy. ITC Coventry was designed to work just as well in text as in headlines or even on billboards."

Umbero is an experimental geometric blackletter. Umbero was inspired by modern street art (by artists like Pokras Lampas, RETNA, etc.), gothic script and constructivism. It has an ornate and twitchy structure: you can not find two similar letters. Capital letters have even more complex structure, then lowercase, to the extent that you can even use them as initial letters with a different, more calm font if you want to achieve a medieval stylization in a contemporary way. Get Umbero if you need something extra for your design. Or vice versa use it as a starting point of your work. It’s a perfect choice for the mystic or contemporary logos, headlines, oversize typography, branding, identity, website design, album art, covers, posters, advertising, etc.

Pasquinade is a blackletter/roman hybrid. The general look, feel and graphical styling of Pasquinade is that of a blackletter font, however, the underlying letter construction is of a traditional serifed roman. This produces a font with that familiar 'gothic' feel but has the inherent legibility of a roman, due, in part, to the discrete openness of the characters. The presence of roman serifs also lends to this legibility without detracting from the blackletter appearence because of their particular construction. When used in a text setting the font produces an eminently readable, even texture. However, it is when used as a titling font, that the letters reveal themselves to have a contemporary, geometrically calligraphic, blackletter appearance that makes it suitable for any and all uses.

Manhattan was designed in 1970 for ITC by Tom Carnase, who also created Avant Garde Gothic. The distinguishing characteristic of this designer's work is found in the emphasis on the thick-thin constrast. In this case, Carnase approached the border of the impossible. The heavy vertical strokes stand opposite the finest of lines and the thick columns dominate the overall look. The basic forms are strictly constructed, as are those of Morris F. Benton's Broadway of 1925, to which many parallels can be found. Manhattan is best used for applications which will not be placed too far from the viewer, as at too great a distance the fine lines can no longer be seen. It should be used exclusively for headlines in medium point sizes.

The Parliament typeface was designed by Jonathan Hoefler beginning in 1995. A burlesque typeface in the Regency Blackletter style, Parliament was inspired by the ‘Four-line Pica Black No. 1’ typeface of William Caslon Jr (1821), whose enigmatic design for the letters E, G, I, N, V and Y hinted at a broader ambition to modernize the arcane shapes of the gothic alphabet’s capital letters. Parliament completes this project for the first time by including two sets of alphabets, one archaic and one modern, along with a third set of ‘small caps’ that restores to the blackletter the versatility of Roman type. Parliament was first used for the 1998 ATypI Conference in Lyon, and was published by Hoefler&Co in 2022.

Vinque is an interpretation of a nineteenth century Arts & Crafts revival of medieval lettering. British type designer William Morris completed Troy in 1891—a splendid blackletter typeface in the medieval style. It’s beautiful but some modern uses like UI and video game text require a less ornate gothic appearance. Vinque is simple. It avoids strong vertical blackletter strokes which can present problems for contemporary readers. The end result is an uncomplicated, crisp typeface that successfully conveys medievalness to the reader. Vinque was released in 2002 in one style: Regular. In 2019, Vinque was expanded to seven weights and italics. Language support was bolstered to support most current Latin based languages as well as Greek and Cyrillic. OpenType fractions, f-ligatures and old-style numerals are supported.

A Neogothic typeface that radiates trendy ease and allows bicolor compositions. The decorative elements of Aeronaut, the swashes we call parachutes and the squiggly arrows of the upper-case characters soften the font’s Gothic appearance. It’s the reason why we labeled it a “Neogothic typeface that radiates trendy ease.” Make it as modern as you like it to be. · Aeronaut-Base combined with Aeronaut-Parachute allows bicolor compositions. Simply place them on top of each other to create playful, two-colored headlines. Aeronaut-Balloon is similar to Aeronaut-Parachute but offers even longer swashes. AeronautPlain is similar to Aeronaut-Base but works as a complete font on its own (as it contains all punctuation). We abandoned the swashes of the upper-case characters to keep the font pure and straight. · The glyphs of Aeronaut are derived from Textualis also known as Textura or Gothic Bookhand. Textualis represented the most calligraphic form of blackletter types and is today regarded as quintessentially Gothic. Aeronaut has been inspired by Kirchengotische Schrift, a font that can be found in a German font book from 1879 entitled Vorlegeblätter für Firmenschreiber. Disruptor's Script is the alter ego of our previous project Gentlemen's Script. Unlike the Gentlemen's Script, the new font is an elegant rebel and defies traditions. The font is painted with a brush pen, which is especially noticeable in the characteristic shabbiness and different thicknesses of the strokes. While the Gentlemen's Script is an embodiment of a classic costume, dress shoes and an expensive watch, Disruptor's Script is a fashionable suit, sneakers, an iWatch and a tattoo that peeks from under the shirt. The font retained the incline, speed and overall sense of dynamics inherent in Gentlemen's Script, but got a bit more chaotic and unpredictable. This is especially noticeable in the newly added shabbiness, elongated extenders, a large number of contextual alternates and different ligatures. For some high-frequency letters (10 for the Latin alphabet and 10 for the Cyrillic alphabet), we painted alternative versions that are substituted in the word instead of the standard characters when following our preceding certain groups of letters. In addition, in the Disruptor's Script you can find functional ligatures, including some of the frequently occurring two- and three-letter combinations. All these solutions dilute the monotonous line of the set, add a bit of unpredictability to the font and a touch of chaos to inscriptions. To fully enjoy usage of the font, we recommend that you always keep the features contextual alternates (calt) and standard ligatures (liga) turned on. If you do not have access to applications that support OpenType features, it does not matter—even without these features you can use and enjoy our font!

Speakeasy is a 5-font combo thematically built as a toolset for designing menus and liquor labels as well as coffees, restaurants and signs when the desire is to communicate with style. Originally put together to be used by the most famous speakeasy in Buenos Aires, this set contains a script, a minor (almost flat) wedge serif, a flare serif, a sans serif, and a bold Didone. The seed for the script was found in a German lettering book, and the other fonts reflect the familiar advertising and announcement styles of the early 20th century. The Speakeasy script comes with two different ways to connect the letterforms. Also included are many alternates, swashes, endings and flourishes — all accessible via OpenType features or glyph palettes. Speakeasy Modern and Speakeasy Flare are small cap fonts, and come with a few alternates. Speakeasy Sans and Speakeasy Gothic come with full sets of majuscules and minuscules, but contain small caps and a few alternates as well. A few rules and ornaments are also sprinkled throughout the set. This combination of fonts worked wonderfully for the project that called for it. Hopefully it will work just as well for your project.
