A retro-style can be regarded as lack of original contemporary ideas. But also as passion for nostalgic time-traveling. Everyone wants to return to their youth at least for a moment. Inicia was one of my first designs (hence the name) from the mid-eighties. The original drawing was never finished because there were too many similar typefaces around. After three decades the shapes of the old designs suddenly became tempting to finish. Now restored and completed at Storm Type Foundry.

First cut by Lanston Monotype, the Goudy Modern font family was based on designs used by French engravers during the eighteenth century. Although called a modern it possesses a number of old style characteristics. Capitals are much shorter than the ascenders, serifs are fully bracketed and round shapes have a slight stress. The overall weight of Monotype Goudy Modern is on the heavy side, giving good emphasis in display sizes but it is not too heavy for use in text.

Northwoods is a simple, handwritten sans serif font family designed by Cindy Kinash. This family includes five weights and italics. Northwoods is a little different than most sans serifs being that it’s handwritten. You can use the fonts in multiple ways such as in design or textually. Morgenfrisk font is a handmade, thin school class font - very legible, very neat and very nice too. I found the original letters in a Speedball™ Text Book. After a lot of time sitting at my desk, creating fonts and trying to figure out how my new software works, I really like to work out a bit. The only thing that I do not like is the music they play at the gym; it is usually a selection of poppy tunes that appeals to a large audience. But not to me. I prefer my death metal - and eighties music, as it brings back a lot of good memories. So, I bought myself some ear buds and installed a music streaming app on my phone. Yes, I know, I am probably the last person on earth who discovered streaming... One day, during a workout session, I listened to a list of eighties music and one song that I had forgotten about started playing: Rappers Delight by The Sugarhill Gang. When I started working on the font, I had to think about the song and named it Square Beat. Square Beat font, other than the name implies, is a rounded, handmade font, ideally suited for books and magazines aimed at a young audience, toy packaging or posters. It comes with great language support, including Vietnamese.

The hand lettering found on the cover of the 1912 sheet music for "Somebody Else is Getting It" featured a blockish Art Nouveau style with rounded corners and a very lurid title [although it likely had a more innocent meaning in those days than the casual observer might interpret today]. Now available as Nouveau Standard JNL, it is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Corkboard JNL is a bold, yet fun rounded-ends typeface that was popular in the 1970s and enjoying a revival amongst students and teachers via die-cut bulletin board letters. Five variations are offered—Regular, Slanted, Shadow, Shadow Slanted and Kiddies. Corkboard Kiddies JNL has a limited character set and eccentric spacing that emulates the way a child might put letters onto a bulletin board.

LineDrive was inspired by an obscure 19th century type design. It has no curved lines and what are normally circular elements in the lower-case letters are diamond-shaped. It might work best with only upper-case letters, which have a Victorian feel to them.
