The word Text" in Goudy Text™ is short for Textura, and textura is the style of blackletter or gothic writing developed in Northern Europe in the middle ages. The use of space in blackletter is quite different from what we know about Roman letterforms. Lowercase forms in blackletter writing and typefaces must be evenly textured with black and white elements, like the texture of weaving or fabric. Capital letters can provide either an integration of the even texture (by the use of decoration in their construction) or, if they are wide and open and filled with white, they provide bright spots of visual emphasis. Goudy, despite being an American in the twentieth century, understood well the fundamental texture of medieval blackletter and the importance of both density and light. He designed Goudy Text in 1928 for Lanston Monotype after studying the type in Gutenberg's 42-line bible; still one of the best models for designers of blackletter typefaces. The lowercase of Goudy Text has impact and medieval authenticity. The standard caps have some Victorian eccentricities but are mostly well drawn. The alternate, or "Lombardic" caps are spectacular - they set beautifully with the lowercase letters, providing the proverbial shafts of light through the Gothic cathedral's stained glass windows. An image spotted on the internet of a brass shipping stencil for the Royal Quality Brand (for the John H. Fitch Company of Youngstown, Ohio – a coffee and spice merchant). The lettering style for “Royal Quality” was a hand-cut, condensed, slightly flared sans serif with various character flourishes, giving the letters a stylish, somewhat regal look. Expanding on this idea, a full character set was developed and redrawn digitally as Royal Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Dan Hardie, a Miami-based graphic artist and creative consultant at Mutiny, Inc. shared an image he’d spotted online of some interesting signage formerly on the front of the Miami Medical Building. Comprised of hand-cut metal characters (with a thoroughly avant-garde “Art Deco meets Modernist” approach), this instantly became a font design idea unusual and quirky enough to develop as a digital typeface. The end result is Office Visit JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Road Picture JNL was modeled after the hand lettered title and credits for the 1940 Bob Hope-Bing Crosby semi-musical comedy “Road to Singapore”, and is available in both regular and oblique versions. Although the lettering design doesn’t resemble anything that was probably used in Singapore at the time, its faux “exotic” look still makes for an interesting revival. Bob Hope and Bing Crosby made a total of seven “road” pictures, hence the homage in the name of this type font.

Palitura is a display typeface designed to translate Cyrillic flavor into the Latin script. Palitura means lacquered book cover in Old Ukrainian. The design of letter shapes is inspired by Early Cyrillic handwritten letters and Ukrainian patterns that are conveyed through the sharpness of form, vertical strokes that are narrower at the bottom, stylized oblique hooks at the top, and triangular accents. Ciribiribin is an Italian ballad composed by Alberto Pestalozza in 1898. Many versions with different sets of lyrics have been recorded over the years. The hand lettering on the sheet music for one such popular version of the song was comprised of bold characters with a "semi-serif" treatment; that is, characters with partial or no serifs on certain strokes of the letters. Ciribiribin JNL extends this unique design into a complete digital typeface. Available in both regular and oblique versions.

The lettering on the cover of the sheet music for 1919's "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise" was set in a decorative sans serif with an engraved line adorning each character. Reminiscent of the headlines of legal documents, way bills, stock certificates and the like, the digital version of the design was given the name Legal Eagle JNL and is available in both regular and oblique versions. A companion font without the engraved lines is also available as Junior Clerk JNL.
