Madelican is a beautiful combination of modern and classical calligraphy, inspired by the handwriting of Italian women and ancient manuscripts. I think calligraphy has an advantage for the alternate characters, Madelican has tons of possibilities for just one letter. My exploration of this fonts was not as easy as in my imagination, it took several trial and errors for the perfect balance of the style. Madelican is very suitable for weddings, book covers, greeting cards, logos, branding, business cards and certificates, even for any design work that requires a classic, formal or luxurious touch. Almost all letters have more alternate than others, it is fine because the limitations of the shape of the letters. It must be readable and legible. Every letter that I've chose are only the best on it and fit with the character style. Multi-lingual support and up to 16 stylistic alternates. When I released the original Organic in 2009, I was satisfied with it. It was what was possible from me and the technology at the time. The Organic Pro of 2021 takes those original desires of delivering a highly legible and friendly sans serif, and doubles down on those notions, while exploring what further infusing warmth in a highly structured sans serif can really do for a client. Free of distracting and potentially dating visual traits and cues that could be seen as endemic of a specific time period or ‘type trend’, Organic Pro is its own person—take it or leave it. Inviting warmth, assured reliability, and a head nod of confidence is what you walk away with—a stark contrast to the cold, impersonal geometrics and grotesques proliferating the design annuals currently. Before Bodoni, there was Didot. With the publication by Francois Ambroise Didot of Paris in 1784 of his prospectus for Tasso’s La Gerusalemme Liberata, the rococo typographical style of Fournier de Jeune was replaced with a spartan, neo-classical style that John Baskerville pioneered. The typeface Didot used for this work was of Didot’s own creation and is considered by both G. Dowding and P. Meggs to be the first modern face. Three years later, Bodoni of Parma is using a very similar face. Just as Bodoni’s typeface evolved over time, so did that of the Didot family. The eldest son of Francois Ambroise Didot, Pierre, ran the printing office; and Firmin ran the typefoundry. Pierre used the flattened, wove paper, again pioneered by Baskerville, to permit a more accurate impression and allow the use of more delicate letterforms. Firmin took full advantage of the improved paper by further refining the typeface introduced by his father. The printing of Racine’s Oeuvres in 1801 (seen in our gallery image #2) shows the symbiotic results of their efforts, especially in the marked increase in the sharpness of the serifs when compared to their owns works of only six years earlier. It has been suggested that one reason Bodoni achieved greater popularity than Didot is the thinner hairlines of Didot were more fragile when cast in metal type and thus more expensive for printers to use than Bodoni. This ceased to be a problem with the advent of phototypesetting, opening the door for a renewed interest in the work of the Didot family and especially that of Firmin Didot. Although further refinements in the Didot typeface were to come (notably the lower case ‘g’ shown in 1819), we have chosen 1801 as the nominal basis for our presentation of HiH Firmin Didot. We like the thick-thin circumflex that replaced the evenly-stroked version of 1795, possible only with the flatter wove paper. We like the unusual coat-hanger cedilla. We like the organic, leaf-like tail of the ‘Q.’ We like the strange, little number ‘2’ and the wonderfully assertive ‘4.’ And we like the distinctive and delightful awkwardness of the double-v (w). Please note that we have provided alternative versions of the upper and lower case w that are slightly more conventional than the original designs. Personally, I find the moderns (often called Didones) hard on the eyes in extended blocks of text. That does not stop me from enjoying their cold, crisp clarity. They represent the Age of Reason and the power of man’s intellect, while reflecting also its limitations. In the title pages set by Bodoni, Bulmer and Didot, I see the spare beauty of a winter landscape. That appeals to a New Englander like myself. Another aspect that appeals to me is setting a page in HiH Firmin Didot and watching people try to figure out what typeface it is. It looks a lot like Bodoni, but it isn't!

Capitolium was designed in 1998 at the request of the Agenzia romana per la preparatione del Giubileo for the Jubilee of the Roman Catholic Church in 2000. This type design was the central part of the project for a wayfinding and information system to guide pilgrims and tourists through Rome. Capitolium also continues Rome’s almost uninterrupted two-thousand-year-old tradition of public lettering . It is a modern typeface for the twenty-first century and strongly related to the traditions of Rome. Soon after the completion of this project Unger began contemplating the possibility of bringing the atmosphere of this design to newspapers. Though Capitolium works well in most modern production processes and also on screens, it is too fragile for newsprint. For newspapers sturdier shapes were required as well as more characters to a line of text, and Capitolium News has a bigger x-height than Capitolium. Capitolium News is a thoroughly modern newsface, with classic letterforms linked to a strong tradition. Capitolium News for running text comes in the variations regular, italic, semibold, semibold italic, bold and bold italic. As is possible with most of Unger’s type designs, Capitolium News can be condensed and expanded without any harm to the letterforms. The update to this beautiful font family, Capitolium News, includes the addition of over 250 glyphs featuring full Latin A language support, new ligatures, 4 sets of numerals, arbitrary fractions and superiors/inferiors. Furthermore, kerning was added and fine tuned for better performance.

The digital font Technotyp is based on the hot metal typeface created by the German typographer and type designer Herbert Thannhaeuser (1898-1963) for the former East German type foundry Typoart in Dresden. In the typography book ‘Der Schriftsetzer’ (Fachbuchverlag, Leipzig, 1952), by Paul Fritzsche, this absolutely beautiful slab serif design is presented in all its variations. Fritzsche remarked that – because of its rather condensed form and its relatively long ascenders – the 'Werkschrift' of the Technotyp (comparable with our 'Regular') seemed to be very well suited to serve as a text face, and recommended for this purpose that the face be cut for the composing machine. However, this never happened and the entire Technotyp family was made available for hand composition only. This is finally changing and being remedied for good now: URW++ proudly presents the new digital version of this really charming font family with its distinct flavor of the 1950s, adding it to the other digital renditions of Herbert Thannhaeuser fonts at URW++, namely Garamond No. 4 and Magna. The original Typoart family had an italic style for the light version only. The new digital version of Technotyp includes italic styles for the regular, medium and bold weights as well, enhancing the family to meet today’s standards and requirements for professional type setting. To further increase its usefulness, Cyrillic faces were created, too. True to the standard for all digital fonts at URW++, the character set for Technotyp covers all West- and East European languages.

This family was created inspired from two French (one so common and a very rare large one) "toy print" boxes, named Le petit imprimeur, with rubber stamp characters from the 1920's. The big difference from our 1920 My Toy print is that this font is complete, with upper and lower cases, accented, complete punctuation and some symbols. The doubly of each usual character in each style (A-Z/a-z and numerals) allow to give a rich and variously uneven appearance, looking like the results of the real use of those old rubber stamps, with bad kernings and alignement. The font is containing West (including Celtic), Central, East European, Turkish and Cyrillic characters. The bold style may be used as a reinforcement, mixed with normal style without disadvantage, allowing finally four choices for each usual letter... The original size is 6mm (about 17 pts).

German type designer Erik Spiekermann and American type designer Christian Schwartz created this sans FontFont between 2003 and 2011. The family has 14 weights, ranging from Thin to Ultra (including italics) and is ideally suited for advertising and packaging, book text, editorial and publishing, logo, branding and creative industries, small text, wayfinding and signage as well as web and screen design. FF Unit provides advanced typographical support with features such as ligatures, small capitals, alternate characters, case-sensitive forms, fractions, and super- and subscript characters. It comes with a complete range of figure set options – oldstyle and lining figures, each in tabular and proportional widths. As well as Latin-based languages, the typeface family also supports the Cyrillic and Greek writing systems. In 2004, FF Unit received the TDC2 award. This FontFont is a member of the FF Unit super family, which also includes FF Unit Rounded and FF Unit Slab.

Introducing Terrapin! I named this after listening to a song called "Terrapin on a Tightrope." Considering the fact that a terrapin is a kind of turtle, it makes that song title seem pretty harrowing! This font has heavy roots in one of my favorite lettering styles. It's rough, scrappy, and likes to do its own thing. It has a full uppercase and lowercase set, numbers, punctuation, and lots of extended Latin characters for language support. It also includes alternate versions of 17 lowercase letters. Where Terrapin really shines is in the ligatures. I've written separate two- and three-letter combined forms for some of the most common letter combinations, and a few uncommon ones to boot. There are almost 100 ligatures in here, all PUA-encoded so everyone can access them (and also coded so if your software does automatic ligature replacement, they'll pop right in).

HS Alhuda is a display typeface. It can be used for titles and graphic projects, which support Arabic, Persian Urdu and Kurdish. It has been created based on modern kufi style. It enjoys flexibility between sharp and curved lines in the structure of characters. This supports with a beautiful appearance and wonderful geometric structure. The sharp endings in the bottom of character also give an aesthetic addition to the character. (8) Weights has been created for this typeface between the heariline weight and heavy weight. Besides, those six additional weights which can be used in headline, has baseline parts are more thicker than the vertical parts. One has a regular form and the others has a stencil form in the middle using various styles. This typeface with its diversity of (14) weights is intended to be an attempt for a good addition to Arabic typography.

Dorica is a serif font family optimized for small sizes. It is very sober and simple, with a classic appearance at first sight but the curves and details like the serifs make it very different. The name is inspired by Doric, the simplest of the three orders of organizational systems of ancient Greece. The large x-height makes it perfect for use in magazines and every context which calls for text in small sizes. Dorica comprises 14 styles, from Thin to Black with their corresponding italics. Each font includes small caps, very useful for books, plus OpenType features such as proportional figures, stylistic alternates, tabular figures, numerators, superscript, denominators, scientific inferiors, subscript, ordinals, fractions and many ligatures. The extended character set supports Central, Eastern and Western European languages. The range of styles provides great flexibility for both text and titling, and the ligatures make for an original and creative appearance.
