Tailor was a study of slab serif style with round and comfortable feel. I wanted to merge round shapes with exaggerated ink traps for legibility.

FG Rakel is a small old looking handwriting connected script font. I have found it useful on greeting cards and scrapbook journaling among other things.

One menorah that I have long found particularly appealing was named The Tree of Life Menorah, a replica of which I gave as a gift one holiday to a kindly old couple who were neighbors and became friends. It had a simple, organic elegance that I see in the best of Art Nouveau sculpture. To me personally, Judeism is a celebration of life, like the triumph of the flower that blossoms in the crack of the city sidewalk. Just as Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the temple and the miracle of the oil, it celebrates the victorious quest for freedom of the Hebrew people led by Judah Maccabee. Hanukkah represents determination and courage and faith — and it represents the presence of God in the lives of His people. It is interesting to note that the founding of the Albanian nation in the early twentieth century grew out of the resistance of the Albanian people to the imposition of Greek language and culture in the aftermath of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. The typeface, HADASSAH, designed by Henri Friedlander (1904-1996), is my favorite Hebrew typeface. Thirty years in the crafting, I believe it is unsurpassed for its shear beauty, combining a subtle modulation of stroke with a simplicity and clarity of form. No doubt, that is why it has become so popular. For me, the Sîyn/Shîyn characters are especially satisfying. For a Hanukkah message in Hebrew, I would choose HADASSAH LIGHT for a headline and print it as large as I could. If, however, you are looking for a friendly, warm face for a seasonal message in a roman-letter based language, may I suggest BETHLEHEM EPHRATH. It will be as comfortable as a bulky, hand-knit sweater on a frosty afternoon and reflects the solid, encompassing, family orientation of this holiday. It was on the way to Ephrath that Jacob’s beloved wife Rachel gave birth to Benjamin and then died from her labor. It was to Ephrath that Naomi and Ruth returned and in Ephrath that we have the wonderful, heart-warming story of the marriage between Ruth and her Redeemer-Kinsman, Boaz. And it was to Ephrath that prophet, Samuel, went to find a new king and there in Ephrath that the prophet annointed a small shepherd boy named David. The Proverbs tell us to seek wisdom. Never underestimate the impact you have on others. Words of kindness can change people’s lives. The Talmud says that the highest form of wisdom is kindness. Be wise this holiday season. The font BETHLEHEM EPHRATH is based on the typeface Accent with the permission of URW++ of Hamburg, Germany. Like most display fonts, it is most effective at 18 points and larger. Like most script fonts, it is most effective when set with both upper and lower case. Although this font is readable in all caps (many scripts are not), that does not make it a good idea. Do so only with caution.

New York vibes FS Irwin was born in New York while Senior Designer, Fernando Mello, was studying an intensive 5 week typeface design course at the Cooper Union. His brief was to design a perfectly clear typeface that could communicate well, without loud or overtly mannered design features. Fernando was influenced by the subway font in New York: ‘It is very in your face and clear, always in bold. It doesn’t shout much but at the same time is very present and unique. The design is completely different but it was this spirit I wanted to capture for FS Irwin.’ And the vibe of the city: ‘In a similar way to London, New York is so mixed and so cosmopolitan. I was amazed by the different styles and identities I saw there, and tried to encapsulate this essence to create something new, relevant and very now.’ Incisive quality Rather than focusing on quirks or distinctive characteristics, the key to FS Irwin is the quality of its design and spirit of simplicity. The design, proportions and details are usable and authentic and it is suitable for countless situations, without running the risk of being instantaneously noticeable. Families like this can be used on nearly anything, from more playful designs to serious corporate IDs. ‘Extensively tested and precisely drawn text-oriented typefaces are what I enjoy designing the most. There is a beauty and a different approach, a different way of making them interesting, sellable and usable rather than adding flicks or unexpected details.’ Inscriptions and calligraphy FS Irwin’s origin lies in Fernando’s studies in inscriptional lettering and writing-calligraphic exercises at the Cooper Union. Mello started the process by digitising his explorations and adapting them into a more workable sans serif structure. The traditional forms of writing which gave the basis to Latin type as we know it today were the perfect place to start. This influence can be seen in the proportion of the capitals and in slight writing-calligraphic details in the lowercase, such as the slightly angled, chiselled spurs and their open terminals.

Czech designer Oldrich Menhart (1897-1962) devoted his life to making letters. He was a calligrapher, lettering artist, and typeface designer with over twenty faces to his credit. The Monotype typeface, Menhart, was the second of his designs. Menhart began work on the design in the early 1930s and turned over his final artwork to the Monotype Drawing Office in 1934. The first size cut was 14 Didot (Didot points are the traditional European system of type measure, and are roughly equivalent to the point system commonly used by today's digital fonts). The 14D font was followed by 18D and 24D, indicating that the design was considered most suitable for display work. However, a 10D size was later cut from the same master drawings at the request of a Monotype customer. Menhart's design was light and open, with an even color and a slight squareness" to its round shapes. Because the Czech alphabet has 15 accented letters, Menhart included these diacritics as an integral part of his design, not as an afterthought. As a result, accented copy set in Menhart has a cohesive quality rarely seen in other typefaces. Monotype's new digital release of Menhart is the first revival since the hot metal fonts were cut. Menhart Display is based on the original Monotype drawings, while a slightly heavier, re-spaced version has been created for text sizes. Both versions offer the full capabilities of the OpenType format, such as the automatic insertion of old style figures, ligatures and small caps. In addition to English, the extended character set supports most Central European and many Eastern European languages. One of Menhart's lifelong goals was to share the richness of his Czech culture by drawing typefaces that uniquely served Czechoslovakia literature. Corleone was originally designed as a two font family in 2001 and offered for free. This year we've expanded the font family to twelve fonts including small caps and italics. While the new Corleone has been greatly refined and is a much more professional quality font we've decided to still offer the original two fonts for free. Corleone is the perfect font for t-shirts and other merch, the new small caps make this font stand out and bring attention to whatever you use it on. Corleone is the font you can't refuse. Tech notes: Corleone was designed after a famous movie logo in the 1970's with a title name that sounds a lot like The Grandfather if you know what I mean. The movies had three installments, my original font was patterned after the logo for the third movie, the new Corleone Primo and Secondo versions are patterned after the logos of the first two movies. The differences are noticed mostly in the lowercase letters. One thing you will not find in this font family is the puppeteer or puppet master hand because it's been registered as a separate trademark of Paramount Pictures. If you're using an application that works in layers then you'll be interested in the four extra over score glyphs included in some of the versions of this font. Sorry, MS Word does not work in layers so this feature will not work in MS Word. When you open up the glyph map in Adobe Creative Suite you should see the over score glyphs when you scroll down to the bottom. These extra over score glyphs allow you to extend the top line of a single capital letter, with four different lengths you should be able to mix and match to achieve the length that you desire. When using the over score glyphs it's best to divide your word or headline into separate text objects, the cap being one object and the remaining letters being the second. If you try using the over score glyphs on a single text object then with each over score that you add the text after it will get pushed down the line.

Orthotopes is reminiscent of that ever-familiar 70s style sci-fi font whose name I cannot recall and probably doesn't look a thing like this anyway.

I love the feel of a short, wide font. This handwritten font is a great way to mix and match heights and widths in a design.

This font has the same uppercase and lowercase letters with some modifications on the uppercase letters. I included the modified letters to use however you like.

Oliva & Oliva Italic are two strong and funky display fonts. Influences came from typefaces like Futura Black by Paul Renner and Motter Ombra by Othmar Motter, but also Stilla by François Boltana and Allegro by Hans Bohn lay on the desk. All these ingredients were mixed to a new and contemporary type experience and packed in proper OpenType files Oliva & Oliva Italic are OpenType Pro, featuring full Western, Central European, Baltic, Turkish and also Cyrillic language support. They contain ligatures, superior numerals, and a stylish set of decorative ornaments and arrows.

This family was inspired by the set of fonts used in Paris by Ponce Rosset, aka “Faucheur” to print the account of the second voyage to Canada by Jacques Cartier, first edition, in 1545. It is a Garalde set, the punchcutter is unknown, certainly it was not Garamond himself. In our two styles (normal and italic), fontfaces, kernings and spaces are scrupulously the same as in the original. This Pro font covers Western, Eastern and Central European languages (including Celtic) Baltic and Turkish, with standard and long-s ligatures in each of the two styles.

This font is mainly inspired from the engraved characters of the small book known as “Operina”, or “The method and rules for writing cursive letters or chancery script” from the famous calligrapher Ludovico Vicentino Arrighi, published in Roma in 1522 and signed with simplicity “Ludovico Vicentino”. The font contains a large set of standard ligatures and alternative characters: two lower cases, four sets of standard capitals, long s and variants, titlings, each feature easy to use with OTF managing software. It is a pro font, containing Baltic, Eastern, Central, Western European and Turkish diacritics.

This rough font was inspired by a Russian Cyrillic hand of the 1350s “Russkaja Pravda” (a Russian text of common Laws). As a Pro font, it supports Western and Northern European, Icelandic, Baltic, Eastern, Central European and Turkish specific characters, as well as Old Russian glyphs, including many which fell out of use in the 1700s, except in religious texts — in all over 136 Russian glyphs. The upper and lower case have the same form and almost same size, like in the original texts, which had only one size and style.
