The inspiration for this exuberant exercise in penmanship was found in Frank H. Atkinson's A Show at Sho-Cards: Comprehensive, Complete, Concise, published in 1918, executed with the then-state-of-the-art Payzant Reservoir Pen. It retains its quaint charm, even after almost a century. Both versions of this font contain the complete Unicode 1252 (Latin) and Unicode 1250 (Central European) character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Monotype Lightline Gothic is a thin sans serif face cut by American Type Founders to work with Franklin Gothic, which had been designed as a bold face. The rather condensed nature of the Monotype Lightline Gothic font has made it popular for advertising display and newspaper work.

Delegat is a comic book lettering font inspired by handwritting of Frank Ching. The family includes Regular, Italic and Bold version. Delegat contains two variations for each letter and ligatures to swap out any two identical letters that appear next to one another for a pair that is slightly different. Franko Luin, Carniola's designer, on this typeface: Carniola is a pastiche of different type designs from the beginning of the 20th century, mostly American. I am not very fond of it, but was convinced to release it by someone who needed a typeface with a time typical feeling. On the other hand: why not use the original typefaces from that period? Carniola has its name from the Latin name of Kranjska/Krain, a principality in the former Habsburg monarchy (Austria-Hungary), now part of modern Slovenia.

The curves are vintage and the serifs are big. They're so big that for years I never had the courage to tackle this intimidating font. But when fellow signmaker Frank Smith laid the groundwork for this intriguing typeface by Frank H. Atkinson, I couldn't pass on the opportunity to take it from paper to keyboard. After all, at over 100 years old, I felt this alphabet had never been given a proper, digital treatment. So how did this face survive the last century? Well, for those who don't know the history, it survived in Atkinson's ubiquitous book, Sign Painting, published first in 1908, the generational standard for anyone interested in sign-related type design. The layouts and lettering treatments in this book have influenced countless designers for more than a hundred years, but most haunting to me was this strange face with the big serifs. Well, I'm haunted no more. The work is done, the kerning is complete, and nothing but a mouse-click separates a very old idea from the modern world. It's wide, it's big, and with those crazy serifs, it is definitely eccentric-!!!

Griffo Classico™ was produced by Franko Luin in 1993. It is a revival inspired by the types cut by Francesco Griffo for the Venetian printer Aldus Manutius at the end of the fifteenth century. The roman is based on the type Griffo cut in 1496 for Bembo's de Aetna," and the italic on a type he cut in 1501 for an edition of Virgil. Griffo did not make separate italic caps, so Luin designed his own for Griffo Classico. This is a serviceable family with five weights, including small caps.
