Although less prevalent today, a cover charge was added to better class night clubs of the 1930s and 1940s to discourage patronage by people of questionable social graces. The general idea was that the lower strata of society (meaning the "average Joe" or "hoi polloi") would balk at paying an extra fee just for entrance to a place of good entertainment and fine dining.

DT PaperType has evolved and morphed over time from quite distant origins. I previously created DT Paperside. It was neither Papyrus nor SSI Countryside, but was inspired in some ways by the Papyrus form, although untextured and smoother, and had the more open dimensions and proportions, similar to that of Countryside SSi, with its larger easily readable lowercase body, and more consistent, shorter stems. DT Paperside had an open scripted feel which was pleasing to the eye and easy to read. DT PaperType has since been crafted from of the original Paperside font. The Organic flow and comfortable form of Paperside has been retained, but it has been shifted very much from the feel of a script font, into a quality, extremely readable, organic and friendly, serif font, retaining its clarity, while adding a great deal of pose and class. This font is primarily suited to body text, and as such is extremely readable. It does however also make an excellent Display font, and comes with a full set of over sized Caps that drop below the line to stand out on a headline when required. Paperside can also automatically enhance the first letter of most sentences, and changes other letters to suit their position within words, and the letters they appear beside. Now comes with an italic that curves and softens various letters. For best results, use this ‘smart font’ with Contextual Ligatures turned on. Mulitiple Stylistic Alternatives are included. Inspiration for this fonts predecessor (Paperside) came from two other fonts. Papyrus: designed by Chris Costello and created in 1982, it is a hand-drawn textured typeface, emulating texts written in biblical times. One of the most used (and misused) fonts of all times. Like a lovechild of American Typewriter and Cooper Black, typewritten in melted chocolate, this is Margot. A bold single weight display typeface in roman and italic styles, Margot is boisterous but cuddly; warm but impactful. Margot comes fully loaded with a bunch of esoteric dingbats (grouped in the ornament feature), four figure styles (proportional- and tabular- lining, and proportional- and tabular- oldstyle), a spattering of swash capitals (K, Q and R), stylistic alternates and one discretionary gi ligature in the Roman. Stylistic alternates are split into stylistic sets thus: SS01 - alternate forms for ampersand and asterisk, and # changes to an attractive numero symbol. PF Libera was designed at a time of leisure with no particular intention for commercial use. In fact it was offered in the beginning as a freeware. In 2001, designer Charis Tsevis was convinced that it may have some commercial value, so Parachute obtained the rights to sell this typeface. At that time, we did not even imagine what would follow. Since then, PF Libera is one of our most successful typefaces. We have seen it being used in very diverse applications. From publishing to advertising to banking, to transportation, to retail applications. Food, beverages, fashion, automobiles, tourism, the list goes on and on. Madrigalle was seven months in the making and may be described as a contemporary copperplate. When designers look for a font that is both elaborate and strong, they generally have to go back to styles of a previous period, possibly produced recently but not contemporary in their look and feel. In Madrigalle, I believe that I've produced a font that is contemporary but has the boldness and delicacy that mark the fonts of previous generations. I feel that most fonts that derive their style from the complexity of their characters place too much emphasis on upper case characters, and that lower case characters are very conservatively treated. I have tried, with Madrigalle, to redress this imbalance and to introduce informality and vigor to the genre. Madrigalle comes in three options: Two simpler options, Madrigalle Nocturne - slightly less elaborate, and Madrigalle Minuet - slightly more elaborate. Each of these options may be easily used in packages that don't support the Character Map OpenType feature. The Professional Option, Madrigalle Expert, combines all the features of Nocturne and Minuet and has a large number of additional opentype character alternatives. It takes full advantage of Opentype features to provide the designer with a wide range of options, enabling him to give an individual stamp to his work. I recommend that packages such as InDesign and Illustrator, which support Character maps, be used with Madrigalle Expert in order to make full use of this font’s OpenType features. (Just select GLYPHS from the TYPE palette, and set your creativity free!) All Madrigalle styles contain the accented characters used in the major European languages. Alter Biom is eclectic sans-serif inspired by many type styles from calligraphy and blackletter to modernism. Elfen-Fraktur is monolinear blackletter typeface, that was originally designed by M. Beck and published in 1919. This revival comes in two extended versions with a complete Latin 1 character set: Elfen-Fraktur A uses the original blackletter skeletons and is suitable for setting texts with traditional German typesetting and orthography rules. Vododeo JNL is directly named for the free-form sheet music title lettering from Jack Yellen and Milton Ager's "Vo-Do-De-O". The term itself was a catchphrase made popular during the era known as the "Roaring 20s". Yellen and Ager were responsible for such hits as "Ain't She Sweet" (1927) and "Happy Days Are Here Again" (1930) along with countless others. During his career, Jack Yellen provided lyrics to over 200 songs. As a side note, Yellen was married to a distant cousin of type designer Jeff Levine's late mother.

Gutta Percha is a font for golfers. It takers its name from a hard, resilient natural substance that comes from the sap of trees grown in southeast Asia and which was used for the hard core of golf balls well into the twentieth century, when it was gradually replaced with synthetic material. It therefore seemed an appropriate name for a font using the image of a golfer of the 1920s. The letters are from our font Besley Clarendon, reduced to 70%. That means that Gutta Percha set at 40 points will have the same size letters as Besley Clarendon set at 28 points. However, it should be noted that the two fonts have different baselines. If you use them together you will have to manually adjust the vertical alignment. Gutta Percha is obviously a very specialized font, both because of the subject matter and because the uppercase is designed for use as dropped caps. There may not be many uses for it, but when it is right, it will be really right. Whether you are publishing a book about the history of golf or a clubhouse bulletin, Gutta Percha will surely be noticed.
