Space Rocks! A Retro Sci-Fi Font Inspired by 1950s Television Serials “Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! The next episode of Space Rocks is on tonight! What’s it about? Well, it’s all to do with this family of astronauts who crash land on Mars and how they survive all sorts of alien creatures and killer storms! The science is really real too! Who needs school!!!” And so goes the story of one young fan whose imagination is captured by the latest offering in a golden-age of TV science-fiction. A brand of 1950s programming that offered a light-hearted and optimistic view of the future full of exploration, discovery and hazardous adventure! Sometimes even a cautionary tale to live on in your nightmares! With Space Rocks I want to capture this vibe with an all-caps design inspired the opening titles of these shows, fully hand-drawn with a range of discretionary ligatures that add a comic (not atomic!) touch. The package includes Regular and Outlined (all hand-drawn) versions with a complete set of alternatives to help maintain the analogue look. This font also includes unique uppercase and lowercase characters, along with numerals, punctuation, language support, underlines and symbols. Dapplegrim is a Norwegian fairytale collected by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe in their book ‘Norske Folkeeventyr’. The story is about a boy who inherits a big horse (called Dapplegrim, or Grimsborken in Norwegian) and sets off to rescue the king’s daughter from a nasty troll. Dapplegrim is a handmade fairytale font. Use it for your book covers, product packaging and fairytale collections!

Fundevogel is a Brothers Grimm fairytale about a boy who was found in a tree. The story, of course, has all the obligatory characters in it: a fair maiden, a wicked cook, an old forester and lots and lots of shapeshifting. And, yes, a happy end! Fundevogel font is a handmade fairytale font. It comes with extensive language support and all the cuteness you could wish for.

strokeWeight is inspired by the aesthetics of computer vector graphics. strokeWeight is the name of a processing programming function to set the thickness of a stroke. The single bezier curve that describes a stem as a centerline with a particular stem thickness represents the basic idea of this typeface. The unconventional corners and stem endings derive from the concept. If you buy the complete strokeWeight family you will get a strokeWeight variable font file for free!

Amongst some pages scanned and posted online of old wood type alphabets comes this lovely, ornamental design in a reversed style of white lettering on black rectangular boxes. This classic set of wood type is now available digitally as Wood Fancy Reverse JNL. A piece of hand lettered sheet music from the era of the "Roaring Twenties" served as a model for Raccoon Coat JNL. It was a time of Prohibition, bathtub gin, flappers and college boys decked out in beanies and raccoon coats. Printing Set JNL by Jeff Levine comes from a toy rubber stamp printing set imported from Japan in the 1950s and 1960s that's been revived, but is now imported from China. The font has a serif letter so typical of import toys of the day, but actually reads quite nicely in short headlines and specialty ad copy.

Advertiser JNL is a simple A-Z only font used to make retro-styled titles and names. Based on a popular style of retail signage from the 1950s and 1960s, alternating keystrokes will create a contrast of positive and negative letters. The capital letters have the alphabet in white on black boxes, the lower case have the black letters alone—with the white space conforming to the width of the black boxes. In a pinch, the boxed characters can also be used as initial caps. For a more complete character set with the same style of lettering, use DuBois Block JNL.

Momotarō is a Japanese legend about a boy who came to earth inside a giant peach. He was found by a childless woman and grew up to be a hero. I'm in a Japanese mood - mainly because lately I have been working with brushes and ink a lot. Momotaro font is a very detailed brush font. It doesn't come with a hero inside a giant peach, but it does give your design work that extra oomph, ahh and wow.

This steam era typeface, created by Gustav Schroeder in 1884, found popular use on soap box labels and tobacco tins during its initial release. Then, later, a successful and stout revival of Gustav's face, named Othello, was carried out by Morris Fuller Benton in 1934, and the typeface's appeal widened to include items such as broadside posters featuring Boris Karloff's Frankenstein. After metal gave way to film type, Gustav's creation experienced a brief fashion moment in the 1960's, but then disappeared entirely, never re-surfacing as a full digital typeface.
