Morris Fuller Benton's 1935 offering from ATF, entitled Raleigh Gothic Condensed, inspired this ultracompact masterpiece. Benton's alternate characters are included in several lowercase positions, to add a little Art Deco sparkle to this versatile workhorse. Both versions of this font include the complete Latin 1252, Central European 1250 and Turkish 1254 character sets.

Airbuzz is a typeface created by Spinefonts in Warsaw, Poland. The idea was to create something between grotesk and 'lcd' typefaces; something which is strong and condensed. Airbuzz looks best in large sizes (30+ pts). You may find it useful for posters, titling, infographics, signage and corporate identity. Airbuzz features only uppercase characters.

Harpsichord (as I have named it) is from the late 1940s and was designed at Lucian Bernhard Studios in New York for Bernhard's Magnetype Collection. It was originally published as 'Community Low' along with 'Community Condensed'. Many of his Magnetype Fonts have been dormant which I hope to revive in the near future.

The Logansport, Indiana Pharos-Observer dated June 12, 1917 had the following headline running across its front page: “American Steamer Sunk by German U Boat”. The condensed slab serif typeface used to set that headline has been recreated digitally as Newspaper Publisher JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Livery Stable is a revival of an old classic font from the 1800s. Much research was done to recreate the original versions of Livery Stable which include regular, black, condensed and shadow lined versions of this font. The hand lettered name “Chickland” from a 1958 restaurant menu cover was actually a throwback to the Art Deco style with its condensed thick and thin sans serif design. With just a few available letters to work with, it has been turned into Counter Service JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions.

This Art Deco-inspired face is based on the Baltimore Type Foundry’s Tourist Extra Condensed. Graceful and elegant, this typeface’s compact design also packs a lot of information into very little space. This font contains the complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252) plus support for Central European (Unicode 1250) languages as well.

Rigide is a clean, contemporary, geometric, condensed font family. A well-designed bold art deco font. Very chunky. Uppercase, lowercase, numerals and punctuation. CastleType additions to the Koloss family include Koloss Bold Condensed and Koloss Bold Wave. The latter was used beautifully in the wonderful children's book The Leaf Men (and the Brave Good Bugs) written and illustrated by William Joyce.

In 1915 the Leipzig based foundry Heinrich Hoffmeister released the bold condensed version of its Sensation font family which is the most outstanding. The letters f, l and the long s have stylistic alternatives. To get access to all ligatures it is recommended to activate both OT features Standard and Discretionary Ligatures.

Two word examples (“nice” and “bud”) from the J.G. Cooley & Co.’s Specimens of Wood Type catalog for the typeface ‘Roman Triple Extra Condensed Fifty Line’ offered only seven letters to work with. Despite this lack of characters, it inspired Compressed Wood JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Tusker Grotesk is a headline typeface designed for robust and high-impact use. Font family Titla Brus was developed as an extension of Titla, released earlier in 2009. Vintage Price Tags JNL comprises three sets of numbers in both ribbon, circle and star patterns which, when combined will produce point-of-sale price elements. The designs were re-drawn from examples found in an old wood type catalog, and are now collected in digital format. Ribbon-style numbers are found on the upper case keys. A through J have the large numbers, K through T are the smaller, underlined numbers. The remaining upper case keys contain the dollar sign, cents sign and the phrases "each", "for", "dozen" and "pair". On the lower case, the circle set of combination numbers are on the following keystrokes: The keys a through j are the left side semi-circle numbers and the "k" key is a blank left side semi-circle. The l through u keys are the right side semicircle numbers and the "v" keystroke is a blank right side semi-circle. The star set is on the standard numbers keys for the left side of the star, with the right side characters on the corresponding shift keystrokes for the number keys. In following the original design examples, a cents sign follows the numbers on the right side of the circle or star sets. The lower case w through z contain a left side star blank, a left side star with $1, a right side star blank and a right side star with small double zeros (to comprise a star shaped price tag for $1.00).

Umerica first made its appearance in 2007 as a series of characters in a pdf I posted to Typophile. It has taken a lot of time, and determination, for me to finally decide to complete it. I had the basic font completed in 2008, but put it aside as the creation of the italics it deserved were beyond me. That was then. Now the italic version has finally been added twelve years later.

History is always in sight; it is constantly being reconsidered and reformulated in the context of now. We see approaches to art, fashion, textiles, homewares, furnishings … not to mention music, graphics and everything else that culturally enriches our daily lives, revisited and made anew for today.    Address Sans indulges in the spirit and aesthetics of mid-century Modern – Italian industrial design, sleek coffee makers, stylish cars, seductive jazz pressed on vinyl – with a charm and charisma that defies time. It evokes history but is decisively created for today.    Its design, in reality, is rooted in the condensed structure and block modulation of early 1950s German lettering intended for use in street signage, but when we started to work on the various weights and widths, the result was a set of fonts in a style similar to the typographic work developed by Butti and Novarese in the 60s. The multitude of potential applications for Address Sans then became clear.    In a range of 3 widths and 8 weights each, Address Sans includes little verses, true italics, small caps and numerous alternative signs for a total of 48 fonts. The result is a functional typeface that is effortlessly seductive, with geometric features and design details that ooze cool, and take it away from mere reinterpretation towards typographic forms that adapt perfectly for contemporary use.

Finally the light version of Wilhelm Berg’s hot-metal classic which had found its way from Schriftguss to Typoart can be released for nowaday’s use.

I finally managed to create a font from the characters I wrote on my Etch A Sketch board. A bit grungy, but definitely something else.

A condensed, light face spurred serif alphabet was shown on an antique catalog page from Spon & Chamberlain Publishers as “French”. The catalog likely sold tools and dies to stonecutters for making inscriptions in marble, granite and so forth. This elegant design is available digitally as Nouveau Thin JNL in both regular and oblique versions.
