The birth of the monospaced types dates back to the past. There was a need for the creation of typesets for typewriters. The difficulty was to align the different glyphs in the same width. This led to particular problems with letters like “M” and “l”; the former seemed to be squeezed into the same width of all letters and the second one appeared way too streched. Despite – or perhaps because of – the impression of the typewriter is still popular with Graphic Designers. Nowadays there are even monospaced versions of primarily proportional types; for example the the Sans Mono designed by Lucas de Groot or the DIN Mono. Then again, why not the other way round?! In the first half of the Nineties, Erik Spiekermann developed a proportional type named ITC Officina based on the Letter Gothic. According to a survey on the 100 best fonts of all time conducted by FontShop, ITC Officina is in an eighth place, far ahead of its forerunner. This was the reason for me to create a wider design with a Serif and a Sans Serif based on the queen of all monospaced types – the Courier.

Gower Gulch JNL was inspired by some antique gold shirt pins spotted on an internet auction.

The regular style of this family was inspired from the typeface used in Nuremberg, Germany, by Johannes Petreius in 1543 to print the famous “De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium,” the well-known mathematical and astronomical essay by Nicolaus Copernicus. Petreius was also using an original italic style, as he did for the “De Sculptura” by Gaurico Pomponio, in 1542. Unfortunately, nobody seems to know who was the punchcutter of this Jenson-style font. Also included is a title file, containing initials (without diacritics) and small caps (with diacritics). In our three styles (Regular & Italic + Titling), font faces, kerning and spacing are as closely as possible identical to the original. This Pro font is covering Western, Eastern and Central European, Baltic and Turkish languages, with standard and long-s ligatures in regular and italic styles. Both have twin-letter ligatures, but the italic style has extra (genuine) ligatures for f and t with vowels.

The Droid Serif Pro Family (4 fonts) is a contemporary serif typeface family designed for comfortable reading on screen. The font is slightly condensed to maximize the amount of text displayed on small screens. Vertical stress, sturdy serifs and open forms contribute to the readability of Droid Serif while its proportion and overall design complement its companion Droid Sans. The fonts were designed by Steve Matteson, the Type Director at Ascender Corporation. The Droid Serif Pro Family (4 fonts) includes Latin 1 and WGL character sets, along with Old Style Figures (requires an application that support advanced OpenType typographic features).

Friar Pro is a revival of Frederic W. Goudy's "Friar" typeface. Goudy described this typeface design as a 'typographic solecism' as it combines a lowercase of half-uncial forms from the 4th through 7th centuries with an uppercase of square capitals from the 4th century. Steve Matteson developed the font as a tribute to Goudy and his joy of typographic exploration. Steve created a complete character set with OpenType typographic enhancements to give the font an authentic appearance to the original. Friar Pro is a beautiful design which imparts a scribal appearance to any document including greeting cards, certificates and official papers.

Noir is a sans serif font family of 12 fonts with contemporary aesthetics heavily influenced by early 20th century geometric typefaces. While having its geometric structure it carries organic personality with touch of warmth injected to each form. Noir font family ranges from light and elegant weights perfect for small text, to extremely heavy and masculine weights suited for large display sizes. Noir has a rich arsenal of Open Type features for highly professional use and extended Latin, Cyrillic and Greek language support. Noir is delivered as Std and Pro version. This square serif typeface is a real workhorse. It is a modern tool for text design: extremely legible and well shaped. Bandera has six weights with original italics. It catches attention in headlines of posters and magazines or makes reading comfortable in plain texts. Bandera shares main proportions with sans serif Osnova Pro typefamily so ideally can pair it. It has Bandera Text and Bandera Display sister families as well. Please check also Pro version for pan-european support (full Latin-Greek-Cyrillic). Bandera is Spanish for ‘flag’. And Bandera is a symbol of Ukrainian fighting for freedom for many years.

Michael Gills, formerly a resident designer at Letraset, created the Fling typeface in 1995. Fling's letterforms are based on the Ronde --or round--script style from France. The design includes intricate and generous capital letters, which are contrasted with a more reserved lowercase letters. This allows for a sophisticated and elegant appearance in text. Fling's letterforms are highly legible for those of a script face, and it is a typeface with many uses. Aside from short amounts of running text, Fling's capital letters serve well as initials. In the Opentype font are extra ligatures and alternative letterforms thatoffer expanded typesetting possibilities.

Gaffer is a simple little font! The backward slant, large x-height and short ascenders/descenders give the font a casual handwritten look. I’ve included some extra ligatures (ffi, ffl, ff, ks, tt, tf, ft, st) which will substitute automatically when used with OpenType savvy applications.
