Kuroneko in Japanese means ‘ Black Cat’. I was working on a Japan itinerary for a friend and I told him about the luggage forwarding service by a company with a black cat in its logo. Wait: Black Cat? What’s that in Japanese? Cool name for a font! Kuroneko font will not forward your luggage, nor was it made in Japan. But it IS a very versatile font family - even if you’re more of a dog person.

The mysterious Spooky, an alphabet to frighten even the bravest, was created by British designer Timothy Donaldson. The figures line themselves up, irregular and with uneven outer contours, and conjure up thoughts of ghosts, bats, vampires and darkness. Spooky is the ideal font for ghost stories with happy endings, a parody on horror and romance. As an added bonus, Spooky includes illustrations, from black cat to spider to witch - everything needed to earn its name.

Orgovan is based on calligraphic script models lettered with a flat brush, which have been a mainstay in the sign makers' and display artists' handbooks since the beginning of the 1960s. Allektra is a humanist sans serif with a modern feel. It is not as whimsical as many of my fonts, but there are many special dingbats for bullets, and so on. It has oldstyle numbers and the small caps versions have lining numbers and small caps numbers. The Fat version is especially interesting and useful.

LTC Spire with alternate caps was designed by Lanston’s type director Sol Hess in 1937. Spire Roman was designed without lowercase. But it includes alternate rounded caps which transform this extra condensed “fat face” into more of an art deco titling face. Spire Roman has been used within department store logos, luxury hotel signage, perfumes, etc, etc.

Hugh Whyte, best known for his geometric computer graphic images, created these designs to encompass a variety of today's modern attitudes. These illustrations can be used imaginatively in book jackets, brochures, logos, posters, or wherever bold, creative imagery is needed. 'Attitudes' includes many striking and fanciful images from cats, masks and robots to a skull and crossbones!

The devil does indeed find work for idle hands. This was designed by Dan X. Solo about with no excuse whatsoever. The name comes from the fact that a circus that we regularly did work for used it in one of their programs, the only time it was ever used as far as we can recall.

Shoebox font is crafty and sweet. It’s hand-drawn with double letter ligatures for upper and lower case. It works great in all-caps, and the lower case is a funky mix up with some interlocking ligatures too. Shoebox is rough with an occasional curl, and is paired with Shoebox Shapes; a unique picture font of Amy Dietrich illustrations (featuring boxes, bags, cats, stars, familiar household items, and for some reason, a forgetful octopus).

Cayuse is a super-slab, all-caps titling face that tips its hat to the classic French and Italian “fat face” serifs of the nineteenth century. Structurally, Cayuse utilizes a reverse-stress stroke configuration—with thick, meaty slab serifs and sinuous, spiked connecting strokes. This crackling contrast gives Cayuse a very black, dense texture, and the ability to combine and contrast well with other typefaces. Arm yourself with Cayuse to create richly-textured, high-impact typography for packaging, editorial, brand identity, posters, signage, and many other applications. What's more, Cayuse also features an array of “word logos”, providing you even more options for creating dynamic typography.

Initially commissioned in the summer of 2009 for a popular North American ice cream parlor chain we cannot name, Tuba started with a reconceptualization of a somewhat flawed '72 alphabet idea by Swiss graphic designer Erwin Poell. During the back-and-forth of the custom project, other ideas seeped into the design, mostly from other Canada Type fonts, like Fab, Jonah, Jojo and Teaspoon. The end result was what the client called a "sugar circuit trigger alphabet". This now is the retail version of that project. Tuba's main style is a straight-forward mix of 60s/70s art nouveau ideas and late-70s/early-80s tube aesthetic. The Highlight and Outline styles are almost necessary spinoffs for this kind of typeface. And the all-caps Black style is a nod to the fat font fad of the past couple of years. All styles contain many alternates – so many that each style is almost two fonts in one. Make sure to check out the character sets for a few nice and useful surprises. Life's too short. Health Warning! Coconuts are not that healthy!! I always thought that coconuts were the new quinoa, but apparently they’re not that good for you. They are furry balls of saturated fat, sugar and calories, so don’t go all out with your coconut eating habits! Of course, eating a bit of coconut now and then will not kill you, so enjoy! Coconut Punch is a handmade didone-ish font. Nice and rounded and full of saturated brush strokes. Comes with all the diacritics you need too!
