One menorah that I have long found particularly appealing was named The Tree of Life Menorah, a replica of which I gave as a gift one holiday to a kindly old couple who were neighbors and became friends. It had a simple, organic elegance that I see in the best of Art Nouveau sculpture. To me personally, Judeism is a celebration of life, like the triumph of the flower that blossoms in the crack of the city sidewalk. Just as Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the temple and the miracle of the oil, it celebrates the victorious quest for freedom of the Hebrew people led by Judah Maccabee. Hanukkah represents determination and courage and faith — and it represents the presence of God in the lives of His people. It is interesting to note that the founding of the Albanian nation in the early twentieth century grew out of the resistance of the Albanian people to the imposition of Greek language and culture in the aftermath of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. The typeface, HADASSAH, designed by Henri Friedlander (1904-1996), is my favorite Hebrew typeface. Thirty years in the crafting, I believe it is unsurpassed for its shear beauty, combining a subtle modulation of stroke with a simplicity and clarity of form. No doubt, that is why it has become so popular. For me, the Sîyn/Shîyn characters are especially satisfying. For a Hanukkah message in Hebrew, I would choose HADASSAH LIGHT for a headline and print it as large as I could. If, however, you are looking for a friendly, warm face for a seasonal message in a roman-letter based language, may I suggest BETHLEHEM EPHRATH. It will be as comfortable as a bulky, hand-knit sweater on a frosty afternoon and reflects the solid, encompassing, family orientation of this holiday. It was on the way to Ephrath that Jacob’s beloved wife Rachel gave birth to Benjamin and then died from her labor. It was to Ephrath that Naomi and Ruth returned and in Ephrath that we have the wonderful, heart-warming story of the marriage between Ruth and her Redeemer-Kinsman, Boaz. And it was to Ephrath that prophet, Samuel, went to find a new king and there in Ephrath that the prophet annointed a small shepherd boy named David. The Proverbs tell us to seek wisdom. Never underestimate the impact you have on others. Words of kindness can change people’s lives. The Talmud says that the highest form of wisdom is kindness. Be wise this holiday season. The font BETHLEHEM EPHRATH is based on the typeface Accent with the permission of URW++ of Hamburg, Germany. Like most display fonts, it is most effective at 18 points and larger. Like most script fonts, it is most effective when set with both upper and lower case. Although this font is readable in all caps (many scripts are not), that does not make it a good idea. Irish Penny is based on the lettering from Percy Metcalfe's beautiful and influential pre-decimal coinage of Ireland, the Barnyard Collection. The font is more monoline than is conventional for Irish insular styles, almost giving the feel of a modern soft sans, and perfect for small and large scale display purposes. Irish Penny contains a full complement of Latin Extended-A accented characters, Irish lenited consonants with the dot accent, and the tironian et which is commonly used in Ireland instead of an ampersand. Lowercase characters are provided small caps style, slightly reduced in size and subtly thickened in weight. The licensed font comes with a faux italic, and although obliques are not common among insular typefaces, Irish Penny Italic is a useful smart and sporty extra. Paralucent is versatile all-purpose modern sans. Available in seven weights, from Thin to Heavy, and in two widths each with corresponding italics, it avoids some of the more eccentric calligraphic quirks of Akzidenz or Helvetica or the cool precision of Univers for an elegant, functional, yet warm design. There are two additions to the core 28-weight family: a three-weight stencil set, and a four weight text family. The text weights have been adjusted for use at small point sizes, and feature more open character shapes, looser inter-letter spacing for improved readability, and lining numerals for use in listings and tables. Several core ideas inform Paralucent’s design. Prime attention has given to the negative space between characters, giving a more even “colour”, especially in text. For example, the J, L and T have shorter arms than comparable sans typefaces, while the M and W are wider. The A has a lower bar, opening up the interior counter. An unusually high lower-case x-height again helps to give a more even colour and improve legibility. Care has been taken to rationalise repeated elements like the tails on lower-case letters, or the Q and the “ear” of the g. Typographic design solutions that are consistent across all these features add more stylistic cohesion. ‘Ink traps’ are exaggerated incisions used to open up a letter's narrower internal angles, which can become clogged with ink, especially in small point sizes. Now largely redundant due to the high quality of modern print, they are still sometimes used as a stylistic quirk or design feature. Now that digital fonts are often reversed or outlined, or enlarged to enormous sizes, these can also lead to unexpected or obtrusive results. Paralucent takes these inevitable digital manipulations into account, and adds optical corrections without resort to ink traps. The family has been picked up by many UK and US publishers, featuring heavily in magazines like Loaded, Heat and TV Quick, as well as high-end coffee-table photography books and gallery websites. The starting point for Wildcat was the 3×5 squared grid popular for tiled lettering and American sportswear typefaces. However, Wildcat breaks free of the net whenever necessary. This typeface comes across as tough, it has no soft curves, and evokes strength and confidence. DaiVernon is based on the handwriting of card magician extraordinaire Dai Vernon. Known as "The Professor", Vernon was a beloved expert in sleight-of-hand and card magic. These fonts are based on the penmanship in his notebooks from the 1920s, which feature almost no lowercase letters. DaiVernon Direct is based on what appears to be his hastier style, while DaiVernon Misdirect is based on his neater hand. Numerous OpenType bonus glyphs, contextual alternates and discretionary ligatures help to create the feel of his handwriting. This family was inspired by a small French "toy print" box, with rubber stamp characters, from the 1920s. The set contained only capital letters, no accented letters and limited punctuation. We have reconstituted a complete modern standard set. The doubling of each usual character in each style (A-Z/a-z and numerals) gives a rich and variously uneven appearance, looking like the results of the real use of those old rubber stamps. The bold style may be used as a reinforcement, mixed with Normal style without disadvantage, allowing four choices for each usual letter... The original size is 6mm (about 17 pts).

This face was recommended to me by Mark Solsburg, president of FontHaus. At first I was a bit reluctant to revive it, if for no other reason than Frederic Goudy’s admission that he created this design “in a moment of typographic weakness.” However, I put the sample that Mark sent me up on my bulletin board, and over a period of time, it grew on me. It finally got to the point that I had to recreate the face, and from the response that I’ve gotten, I’m glad I did! Uppercase only with numerals and punctuation.

The type design for Impecunious JNL comes from the 1939 sheet music for "You Don't Know How Much You Can Suffer (Until You Fall in Love)". The name comes from another piece of sheet music, 1899's "Impecunious Davis" [a piece of late 19th century tripe demeaning Black Americans]. However, the word "impecunious" was intriguing. According to the website Merriam-Webster.com, the simple definition of impecunious means "having little or no money". Since we've all been in that spot at one time or another, it became a perfect font name. Impecunious JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

These are taken right from the original source material, an extremely rare 1910 catalog of an English wood type maker called Day & Collins in London.
