When Aldo Novarese designed his “tipo inglese” Juliet typeface, he had a simple objective in mind: Reduce the inclination angle of the traditional 18th and 19th centuries English script in order to make the punchcutter’s job easier and the resulting metal type more durable. But when Juliet was released by Nebiolo in 1955, it was a big surprise to both typesetters and calligraphers all over Europe. Novarese’s idea of working the standard copperplate script within the limited technology of the time proved to be a marvel in optical metal sizing (Juliet was available in sizes ranging from 12 to 60 pt), but also opened the door to new calligraphic possibilities. Easier readability and a very friendly color were obvious side effects of the reduced angle. Randolph is a popular font family from Jukebox done in an old fashioned copperplate etching style that harkens back to the days of old leather-bound shop ledgers and hand painted window signs. The large and wide letterforms of Randolph make a bold statement that will add solidity and impact to any design. The basic letterforms of this typeface were found in a lettering book, Rotalución Decorativa, published in Barcelona in the 1940s. Plantain Stencil is based on Plantain which in turn is my interpretation of Plantin Adweight, which was one of my first commissioned projects (by Smarter Image, long before they went bankrupt). Plantin Adweight is one of the most beautiful designs of the Plantin family, which is a modern revival typeface, cut under the direction of F. H. Pierpont in 1913, who based the design on that of a famous 16th century printer, Christophe Plantin, for whom Pierpont’s font was named. The stencil cut of Plantain adds a bit of sparkle to the design. Supports most European languages that use the Latin alphabet.

Originally I called this font YearInYearOutYoureInUrine, but I was told that that name was too long and maybe not in good taste. I settled for WaterCloset when it was first released, but then renamed it with a more appropriate title. It is caps only but the letters on the lower-case keys differ from those on the upper-case keys. It comes with a large assortment of accented letters to support most European languages. Although you certainly would not want to use it for formal invitations, when bad taste is called for, it might be ideal.

Signage is not made up of grid-based dots. They are optical corrected and there is always the same distance between the dots, with the aim to create more harmonic letterforms. The dots also vary gradually in size to reflect the thickening and thinning of strokes, giving the letterforms a sophisticated overall look. Missing Stone features grunge rough, lapidary, antique look inspired by letters carved in stone plates. Capital glyphs are, although damaged, satisfactorily legible, whereas instead of lowercase letters, capital glyphs are placed, also featuring nearly abstract, hardly legible look, cross cut with rough horizontal lines and dots. The overall visual experience is rough, reminiscent of erosion of stone and disintegration. Capitals are legible and of small size, whereas the second group can be used only in bigger size, whereby rendering an interesting text texture in the course of alternate use. The font contains all the Latin accented characters used in European languages.

This unicase typeface, with alternate characters in several of the lowercase positions, is patterned after Mosaik, designed by Martin Kausche for Schriftgeißerei Stempel in 1954. A stencil treatment has been employed, and the outlines have been roughened to enhance its ancient feel. Taranto was inspired by the typeface Domino by J. C. & M. Demarchi (published by Mecanorma in 1973).
