Before completion some of the letters such as A and W were given a more traditional look and were penciled in for alternates. In the end, however, they were added as uppercase characters instead. For this reason most words in lowercase vary in appearance from their uppercase counterparts. This dichotomy between straight lined capitals and rounded ones makes for some interesting contrasts. Mark Stanczyk designed Linotype Typo American in 1999. The font is an excellent revival of American style typewriter type. As most of us can remember from our childhood years, or through old stories and movies, everyone used to type with typewriters before the invention of computers. Unlike computers, most individual typewriters only had one typestyle, or font, to chose from. To make matters worse, the letters in a typewriter font would wear down with use. Over time, text typed out on a typewriter would look more and more corroded, old, and uneven. Stanczyk has captured exactly these features in this “revival” font! Also like most older typewriter styles, Linotype Typo American’s letters are all mono-spaced, i.e., the letter i is the same width as the letter w. Typewriter letters also all tended to be cast in the same size, around 12 points or so. When using typewriter-style fonts, it is best to keep setting your text in similar sizes. (Of course, you can set really large and fun headlines with Linotype Typo American, too; if anything the unevenness of the design will come even more across in these applications.)

I've been learning to read Cyrillic and Greek letters lately, mainly because I've been playing the game GeoGuessr. (If you haven't played it, I highly recommend! It plops you down somewhere in the world in Google Street View, and you have to figure out where you are.) Cyrillic shows up in so many more places than Russia! You can see it in Bulgaria, Mongolia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kyrgyzstan, and more. Because of that, I made sure to include a fun double-uppercase version of those alphabet sets in Sleepy Bear. They're styled the same way as the Latin characters: all uppercase height, with some lowercase-styled letters thrown in at that same height for a fun look for all ages. I've also made two weights of Sleepy Bear: a plump and smooth regular weight, and a lighter weight that's built to stack on top of the regular (though you can use it on its own). Just type out a word in Sleepy Bear, copy it, and then change the copy to Sleepy Bear Light. You'll get a great outline look in seconds! All characters are extensively cleaned up, with smooth curves and rounded ends. Sleepy Bear is great for all print projects, and also cuts out of all materials like a dream. Amarone is a spiky calligraphic display typeface with some old fashioned flavour. It was designed by Carl Crossgrove, and includes an extensive set of swash caps which allow for extra drama where needed.
